South Africa's Visa Backlog Neglects Spousal Visa Applications, Says Immigration Expert
Submitted by: Simon Carletti
CAPE TOWN, South Africa - South Africa's Department of Home Affairs is facing criticism for its handling of the visa backlog, particularly in relation to spousal visa applications. Despite efforts to clear the backlog, the department seems to be disregarding the plight of spouses waiting for years to receive outcomes.
In a recent interview with eNCA on September 20th, Dr Aaron Motsoaledi, South Africa's Minister of Home Affairs, discussed the country's immigration policies. While addressing various issues surrounding the backlog, Dr Motsoaledi appeared dismissive of spousal visa applications, raising concerns among immigration experts.
Andreas Krensel, Managing Owner of IBN Immigration Solutions, expressed his disappointment with the minister's remarks, stating, "The interview with the minister gave the impression that spouses are certainly not a priority of the Department of Home Affairs." He emphasised the negative impact on families, as well as the potential for South Africans to leave the country to be with their foreign spouses, leading to even more migration of skilled labour out of the country.
The issue extends beyond emotional strain. Denying spouses visas not only affects their livelihood but also hampers the unity of the family, a constitutional right. Additionally, foreign spouses who establish businesses in South Africa contribute to job creation and economic growth, a crucial aspect that seemed to be overlooked in the discussion on September 20th.
The lack of attention to spousal visa applications within the visa backlog is a matter of concern for immigration experts and families affected by the delays. As South Africa strives to address the backlog, it is imperative that the Department of Home Affairs gives due consideration to the rights and well-being of spouses legally residing in the country.
