SAFTU Granted Permission to Strike for 31 Hours During National Shutdown

South Africa, March 13, 2023 – The National Economic Development and Labour Council (NEDLAC) has granted the South African Federation of Trade Unions (SAFTU) permission to join the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) in a national shutdown on March 20, 2023. The socio-economic protests will begin after midnight and last for 31 hours.

NEDLAC’s Standing Committee has confirmed that the protest will be protected under Section 77 of the Labour Relations Act (LRA), which means that no employer may take disciplinary action against a worker who joins the protest. SAFTU’s protest action will take place across all nine provinces of South Africa and its major cities.

To prepare for the potential disruptions, people are advised to plan ahead, stock up on groceries, ensure enough medication, and prepare grab bags. Home and heart protection must be applied, and all security systems should be in working order. People are encouraged to talk to their neighbours and form a safety plan.
