SA Corporates shirking medical cover responsibility for their blue collar workers
Written by: Good Hope Medical Aid Society Save to Instapaper{pp}Keeping labour costs down has often been the mantra of large corporates reliant on blue collar workers to bring in their profits. For many years prior to 1994, manual and blue collar workers were denied the rights that many others took for granted. Medical Aid was rarely factored in to their measly wages and very little appears to have changed.
Whilst several medical schemes have attempted to address this issue, none have come up with a package that is both affordable to the member and his employer. However, one Medical Aid has taken the bull by the horns and come up with an option that suits the needs of the member and the pocket of the employer.“We knew what employers wanted from a pricing perspective and new what employees wanted from a medical care point of view”, says Rodney Hallowell Principal Officer of Good Hope Medical Aid Society. The key to this option appears to be flexibility when it comes to choosing your own doctor and no limits on visits or medication. It seems almost too good to be true, but on further investigation very much seems to be the case.“Makoti is an option that perfectly meets the expectations of those with limited incomes giving them the choice of doctor and even conservative dentistry and glasses are covered”, Hallowell continues. It is almost inconceivable that in post-apartheid South Africa, so few employers have changed their attitudes towards their staff when it comes to medical care. The necessity for BEE compliance forced employers to make drastic changes in some cases; it is a pity that adequate medical care for their staff and families was not an integral part of the process.A revolution in the healthcare industry is sorely needed and employers glibly shirking their responsibilities should certainly be less resistant to covering their employee’s health with the advent of the Makoti Health Plan.Contact DetailsRodney HallowellGood Hope Medical Aid Society011 208 1000This email address is being protected from spambots.
