Debt. Depression. Disappearing Dads. SA’s Silent Fatherhood Crisis
This Father’s Day Sebastien Alexanderson explores the rising crisis facing South African fathers — where debt, unemployment, and emotional isolation are breaking SA dads.
12 June 2025: Every year, thousands of South African fathers quietly slip out of their families’ lives — not because they don’t care, but because they feel like they’ve failed. Crushed by debt, job loss, and emotional burnout, many believe their absence is better than their presence.
“This isn’t just a fatherhood issue,” says Sebastien Alexanderson, Head of National Debt Advisors (NDA). “It’s a crisis of masculinity, money, and mental health — and it’s time we talked about it.”
According to the State of South Africa’s Fathers 2024 report, only 35% of children live with their biological fathers, the lowest in recorded history. And while many often blame “absent dads,” few ask what’s pushing them away.
The pressure to be the provider remains, but the economic reality has shifted. “High unemployment, rising costs, and job scarcity have made it harder for men to live up to outdated expectations of fatherhood,” says Alexanderson.
At NDA, over 60% of clients are men aged 29–48. 76% of joint debt review applications are led by male applicants —most only seek help after hiding their situation from partners and maxing out all options.
“This financial stress doesn’t just break wallets — it breaks spirits,” he says. South Africa ranks 10th in the world for suicide, with men five times more likely to die by suicide than women. Financial strain is a major driver.
Many fathers withdraw emotionally and physically, not from apathy but from shame and fear of failure. The result? Children grow up without guidance, while dads silently suffer.
Another overlooked issue is domestic violence and financial abuse towards men in relationships. With 1 in 3 domestic abuse victims being men financial control, emotional manipulation, and societal silence trap many in abusive relationships.
“Society tells men to be strong. But sometimes strength is asking for help,” says Alexanderson.
Tips for Fathers — and Those Who Love Them
- Talk About Money Openly: Silence feeds shame. Whether you're struggling or thriving, honesty is powerful.
- Ask for Help Early: Whether it’s through a registered debt counsellor or a support group — don’t wait until things fall apart.
- Redefine Success: Providing is more than just money. Your time, presence, and emotional support matter.
- Check in on Mental Health: Feeling constantly irritable, numb, or overwhelmed? You’re not alone — and you're not weak for needing help.
- Support Other Dads: Let’s normalise conversations around stress, debt, and fatherhood. Sometimes the bravest thing a man can do is check in on his friend.
