[Pressportal.co.za] VIPs comprising high profile South African business people and politicians demonstrated encouraging solidarity around skills development and job creation, at an Awards Ceremony held recently at Wits University. The evening was hosted by The City of Joburg and Edexcel, the international awarding body, to recognise 650 call-centre operatives, who have passed the internationally recognised BTEC Level 2 qualification in Contact Centre Skills.
The event marks a key phase in the development of an exciting call-centre skills hub, which aims to assist Joburg’s growth as a global destination for the contact centre industry. A key variable in the success of this plan is the City’s ability to grow a large enough talent pool to satisfy industry demand for skilled personnel. Cyril Ramaphosa, the keynote speaker, congratulated the achievers and referring to the exciting call-centre initiative commented, “The call-centre development hub is a gateway to new opportunities for all South Africans.” He added, “Think globally; act locally – let this approach guide the qualifications you achieve and the experience you gain, as this wonderful country of ours becomes part of the global marketplace.” Representing the City, Mankodi Moitse, Executive Director of Finance for the City of Joburg – standing in for the Mayor – expressed her enthusiasm for the potential of the BPO (Business Process Outsourcing) or call-centre sector to create 100,000 jobs by 2009 and bring foreign direct investment into South Africa. Moitse said, “In order to do this, we are building the talent pool to accommodate this opportunity through our innovative and exciting new talent development model. We have a wealth of young talent that we can draw from and who will find not only employment, but meaningful careers in this sector. As the powerhouse of Africa, Joburg has the resources to build an industry that will bring the world to our door.” Martin Cross, Chairman of Edexcel explained the unquestionable benefits of an internationally recognised and industry-vetted qualification, especially in the call-centre industry. He commented, “Vocational and life-long learning are becoming increasingly relevant for people in a global economy. At Edexcel, we work hard to create awards and qualifications that allow learners to gain recognition for their talents and are relevant to their work. Our BTEC qualifications are designed to match qualifications to learning as they develop their careers.” Following this pilot phase of the call-centre initiative, recruitment hubs and technical centres will be established in key regional areas of Joburg, including Soweto, Alexandra, Yeoville and Orange Farm. Many South Africans will be waiting with anticipation for these accessible and life-changing opportunities to become available.
