For 12 years, the Ugu International Film Festival (UGUIFF) has transformed the KZN South Coast into a hub of cinematic excellence, attracting local and international film stakeholders. This year, UGUIFF expanded its impact with the launch of the Film and Business Market, integrating economic growth opportunities into its platform.
A Collaboration for Growth
Organised by Zindela Pictures Group, UGUIFF partnered with the South Coast Tourism and Investment Enterprise (SCTIE), the South Coast Chamber of Commerce, and the Ray Nkonyeni Municipality. This partnership positioned the festival to showcase regional business potential and encourage investment in the local economy.
“The KZN South Coast has long been a top television and film production destination due to its natural beauty, affordability, and film-friendly environment,” said Dr Vusumuzi Sibiya, CEO of SCTIE. “This initiative further markets the region as a prime film destination while highlighting connected investment opportunities.”
Showcasing the Region’s Appeal
With attractions like the Sardine Run, Aliwal Shoal, and Protea Banks, the KZN South Coast is a year-round draw for international filmmakers. The region has been the backdrop for productions including The Longest Date (SABC 3), Tarzan and the Lost City, Blue Crush 2, and Bollywood features.
This year’s UGUIFF (17–19 October 2024) welcomed producers, investors, and local businesses. The Margate Hotel, now the festival’s annual venue, exemplified how local businesses benefit from the festival’s investment-driven focus. Partnerships such as that between Oasis and Karambas with Zindela Pictures Group are producing exciting projects, including the film PARA KKING.
International Partnerships
The 2024 festival introduced the Film and Business Market, drawing international interest. Mitchel Augustine, a London-based producer, screened his film while networking for investment opportunities. Twenty-one business delegates from the USA explored strategic locations, culminating in the establishment of the International Incubation Film Exchange Programme (IIFEP), which will send 15 local business stakeholders to the USA for advanced business training.
Additionally, UGUIFF partnered with Duyunov Motors, a Russian AI and electric car production company, unlocking significant investment in product placement and plans for a production centre for electric vehicles.
Empowering Local Talent
Through workshops and outreach led by the Local Economic Development (LED) office of Ray Nkonyeni Municipality, local talent is being empowered. Rural schools receive film career guidance, fostering new opportunities in the industry.
