As part of the company’s CSI programme to provide disadvantaged communities with facilities that encourage and enhance learning, Hytec recently donated a container library to Crown Mines Primary School in Johannesburg. The library was officially opened on 13 February 2015.   In addition to sponsoring the container structure, Hytec’s R200 000 donation covered the installation of windows, doors, insulation, electricity and lighting connections, and the mounting of book shelves.

A heavy-duty protective resin was applied to the container’s surface, inside and out, which will ensure it achieves a minimum library lifespan of 10 years.   The library was delivered with over 1 000 books and magazines, for both students and teachers, courtesy of Qualibooks Maledi and Rotary International, and, as part of the ongoing Soul Buddyz programme, will have access to an ever-increasing volume literature via the Rotary International book depot in Johannesburg.

In addition, the library was also supplied a new comic book from the critically-acclaimed The Urban Legend series by Josef Yohannes, while the school’s physical education and sports department received a batch of FIFA-approved soccer balls.   At the ribbon-cutting ceremony, Mike Harrison, Hytec General Manager, spoke passionately about South Africa and its people, and Hytec’s desire to be part of a greater solution through educating the youth.   Crown Mines Primary School was originally opened in the 1930s in order to provide schooling to the children of the mineworkers who had found employment in the area. 

Today, 12 full-time teachers and two teacher assistants under the leadership of Principal G. Makhura, with help from the Crown Mines Methodist Church, provide education to over 490 children.   The library was the company’s third such donation in as many years, with the first being donated to Qoyintaba Primary School in Masameni, KwaZulu-Natal, in 2013, and the second to Mantshatlala Intermediate School in Namahadi Phuthaditjhaba, Free State, in 2014.   Hytec is a member of the Hytec Group of Companies.
