How South Africa’s Top CFOs Manage Their Time
Submitted by: Vergas MabundaThe most sought-after resource every leader wants is time. For South Africa’s top finance leaders, managing time effectively is crucial not only for their organisations' success but also for achieving balance, calm, and fulfilment in their personal lives.
You’ve Got Mail
Many professionals can relate to the frustration of time-wasting activities during the workday. Meetings that run too long or could have been summarised in an email are common complaints, but time spent checking emails comes in a close second.
Mark van Deventer, CFO at adidas, acknowledges that checking emails can consume much of his day. “I am trying to put a system in place where I only check my mails every two to three hours,” he shares. Other CFOs, like Nelly Shiluvana of Famous Brands, have learned to embrace life away from the digital world. Reflecting on her experiences in the Kruger wilderness, she says, “I had to learn to roll with it!”
Early Bird or Night Owl?
Time management is also about recognising personal rhythms. Van Deventer identifies as a night owl and jokingly suggests that workdays should start at 10am. He finds it challenging to be productive during the day when constantly fielding questions and data requests. In contrast, Shiluvana is a morning person who prefers tackling her tasks early, avoiding the feeling of "dragging out" her to-do list.
Beyond Spreadsheets
While spreadsheets will always hold a special place in the hearts of CFOs—evidenced by an entire day dedicated to Excel—modern finance leaders are careful about using their time wisely.
Finding time to destress from their high-pressure jobs is essential. Shiluvana, for instance, finds skydiving the perfect thrill: “There’s nothing like that shot of adrenaline for 60 to 90 seconds, which is exactly what I need to keep my day going.” On the other hand, Van Deventer emphasises the importance of mental, emotional, and physical support. “I have a big support group, from life coaches to family and friends, but another way I keep sane is through exercise,” he explains.
