Here’s a Helpful Guide for a Smooth Insurance Claim Process

More than 14,000 people are killed on South Africa’s roads each year, a figure that far exceeds both the global and African averages. During holiday periods especially, serious road accidents become a daily occurrence. In the unfortunate event of being involved in an accident, Wynand van Vuuren, client experience partner at King Price Insurance, provides practical guidance on handling the situation and making your insurance claim as seamless as possible.
After an Accident
By law, you must stop at the scene of an accident. Your immediate priority should be to check for injuries. Once any urgent medical needs are addressed, assess the damage, and, if needed, call the police and emergency services. You are also obligated to share your information with anyone who has a legitimate reason to ask. Finally, be sure to report the accident to the SA Police Service (SAPS) as soon as possible.
Quick Checklist at the Scene:
- Collect the names, phone numbers, addresses, and insurance details of everyone involved. Take photos of their drivers’ licences.
- Note the make, model, year, colour, and licence plate number of all cars involved, along with the date, time, location, and road and weather conditions.
- Document the accident scene, including all car damage. Take photos, but only if it is safe to do so.
- If your car is undriveable, make sure it’s towed by an insurer-approved company.
- Do not admit fault. Simply exchange information and leave the rest to your insurer.
- Report the accident to SAPS within 24 hours. If you are injured, report it as soon as possible. Remember, failing to report an accident that causes damage or injury is a criminal offence.
Claiming from Your Insurer
You have 30 days to report an accident to your insurer, regardless of whether you intend to make a claim. “Your monthly premium is based on your risk profile,” says Van Vuuren. “If accidents go unreported, your insurer will have an inaccurate risk assessment, potentially leading to denied future claims or adjustments to your policy or premium.”
Important: Your insurer may refuse to cover your loss, damage, or liability if you miss the 30-day window for reporting.
Tips for a Smooth Claims Process:
- Inform your insurer immediately. The sooner you report the incident, the quicker they can assist.
- Provide all requested information, including what you gathered at the scene, the SAPS case number, and your detailed statement. Full transparency is essential.
- Wait for instructions before disposing of damaged property or starting any repairs. Written approval from your insurer is required.
- Pay any excess amounts that apply to your claim.
“No one plans to have an accident,” says Van Vuuren. “However, if it happens, doing your part can ensure your claim is processed efficiently, and your car is repaired or replaced quickly.”
