Emfuleni owes Rand Water R432m as taps run dry
Written by: MyPressportal Team Save to InstapaperI will write to the Municipal Manager at Emfuleni Local Municipality and request that he come forth and explain the circumstances around the water crisis.
A sum of R22 million was paid to Rand Water at the end of last week, however, despite that payment, the municipality still owes a debt of R432 million, of which R82 million is current.
Emfuleni taps are running dry as water pressure has been cut by more than half as part of a credit control measure. The vulnerable in our poorest communities are the hardest hit by this as they are now forced to stand in long queues to fill their buckets (see images).
To make matters worse, municipal officials are evading accountability around this issue, it is clear that they think they are above the people. Emfuleni Local Municipality is a failed municipality becuase it cannot meet its core function of delivering basic services to its people.
I will hold the corrupt and self-serving ANC accountable during Council. They have long forgotten about the people in favour of filling their own stomachs and lining their pockets.
Enough is enough, it’s time for total change in Emfuleni. Only the people of Emfuleni can cast out the ANC to bring about a new beginning for themselves and their families.
