Direct Selling: The Answer to South Africa’s Rising Unemployment

Failure to create jobs for over 25 percent of the population has placed government and business on a colliding warpath with the masses. A mining company recently announced that its planning to retrench 5000 employees and that can be catastrophic for the nation.

The JT Phalwane Organization has embarked on a mission to eradicate unemployment through educating people about possibilities and opportunities the small business entrepreneurship industry presents. Removing unemployed people from the streets and giving them tools and knowledge to start small businesses is our primary focus,” says JT Phalwane, founder of the organization.In a recent speech, The Minister of Small Business Development announced that research shows that 50% of employment came from small businesses. Leaders must quickly find ways of creating suitable environments even for non traditional businesses to thrive.

To create a quantum leap in dealing with the triple challenge of poverty, unemployment and inequallity S.A is facing there needs to be a new way of thinking and openness of heart in supporting non traditional business industries to thrive as more people are brought into being economically active. Direct Selling is one such industry that offers a low entry cost into the small business sector and there are thousands of formerly employed South Africans who have utilized this model to become successful entrepreneurs.
