[30 July, 2015]: Pretoria - A polygraph course presented by some of the world's foremost polygraph experts aims to help companies cut costs by training HR Staff in the art of deception detection. The two-month course will enhance participants' interviewing techniques to help businesses hire better and reduce the potential of theft or fraud.

"The purpose of this course is two-fold," says CSI Africa CEO and course organiser, Amelia Griesel. "On the one hand we're helping companies to internalise polygraph examinations to help them cut costs. On the other, it's a question of training them in effective interviewing techniques to cut through deception when considering potential employees."

Commercial crime, an umbrella term for a number of business-related crimes including theft and fraud, costs the South African economy billions or rands per year. According to africacheck.org, 79,109 incidents of commercial crime were reported between 2013 and 2014. It adds that "a single incident can involve tens of millions of rand."

According to Griesel businesses are increasingly using polygraph examinations to screen prospective and current employees with the aim of severely reducing their risk of hiring the wrong people.

"Times are tough, and unfortunately it's hard to know who you can trust. Polygraph is increasingly being used in the workplace to expose falsified personal information, syndicate affiliations, theft from current or previous employers, and a host of other need-to-know facts about a current or prospective employee."

She adds that the upcoming training course offers more than the usual gamut of polygraph training modules. Included in the course is the Forensic Interview Assessment Technique module developed by Nathan J. Gordon, which will greatly help HR personnel detect deception from both verbal and non-verbal responses provided by job applicants.

Gordon will be presenting the polygraph training course alongside three other distinguished names in the polygraph world, which includes Effective Interviewing and Interrogation Techniques co-author William L. Fleisher. Essam Gamaleldin, who is currently the American Scientific Investigative Training  (ASIT) director for the Middle East & Africa, and ASIT Assistant Director Tuvia Shurany complete the all-star line-up of polygraph instructors.

The course will take place from the October 5th - December 6th in Pretoria, and is accredited by both the International Society of Polygraph Examiners and the American Polygraph Association.

Course participants will be provided with polygraph instruments for the duration of the course, and will need their own laptop computers. Successful completion of the course includes a written examination as well as a practical assessment comprised of 25 tests. Participants who successfully complete the course will be fully qualified to work as qualified polygraphists both locally and abroad.
