PRETORIA, South Africa, 20 August 2026: Economic cooperation between the United Arab Emirates and South Africa is accelerating, with UAE investments in South Africa exceeding USD 2.5 billion during the first half of 2026, according to the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs. South African foreign direct investment in the UAE also surpassed USD 800 million during the same period, reflecting an increasingly two-way economic relationship.

The UAE is South Africa's largest trading partner among Gulf Cooperation Council countries, while South Africa ranks as the UAE's second-largest trading partner in Africa. Bilateral non-oil trade reached approximately USD 8.5 billion in 2024, representing 14% growth from 2023. Growth momentum continued into 2025, with non-oil trade reaching USD 3.93 billion in the first half of the year.

Sectoral investment and private-sector engagement

Investment is increasingly diversified across sectors aligned with both countries' priorities: agriculture, logistics, fintech, artificial intelligence, manufacturing, renewable energy, mining, healthcare and education. This reflects a strategic shift toward partnerships supporting productive capacity, technology adoption and long-term growth.

Private-sector engagement has accelerated notably. During the first half of 2026, Dubai Chambers' "New Horizons" trade mission brought 24 Dubai-based companies to South Africa and facilitated 674 business meetings. By the end of Q1 2026, 873 South African companies were registered as active members of Dubai Chambers.

Recent projects and expanding cooperation

Recent projects underscore the partnership's breadth. In November 2025, fintech company Optasia became the first UAE company to list on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange, marking Africa's largest fintech IPO. During the 2026 South Africa Investment Conference, DP World announced approximately USD 80 million in logistics, ports and infrastructure investments.

Telecommunications cooperation is also expanding, with Space42 launching Thuraya 4 satellite services and establishing a wholesale services office. The Jumeirah Group entered a strategic partnership with Thanda Group for tourism development across South Africa and Tanzania.

The bilateral relationship is evolving beyond traditional trade toward diversified, investment-led growth. With strengthening investment flows and deepening private-sector collaboration, the UAE-South Africa partnership increasingly positions both economies for sustained commercial cooperation and industrial development.
