The Garden Route Indigenous Plant Fair returns for third year to raise funds for garden improvement

GEORGE, 24 October 2025:  The Garden Route Indigenous Plant Fair returns to the Garden Route Botanical Garden from 31 October to 2 November for its third consecutive year with a focused purpose.

Among the many special events hosted on the grounds, the Indigenous Plant Fair is the only event that raises funds exclusively for the Garden. Every rand stays in George to support conservation work, visitor upgrades, and long-term resilience.

Strong support in 2024 delivered record plant sales and confirmed the region’s commitment to nature conservation and conscious gardening. Despite that success, 2025 has presented tougher conditions for sponsorships. Community participation now carries particular weight, ensuring that essential projects remain on track and that a public green space continues to thrive for residents and visitors.

Funds raised will be directed to visible, practical improvements. Priority projects include completing the new entrance to improve safety and traffic flow, restoring pathways and wayfinding, expanding water-wise and fynbos beds, upgrading irrigation and nursery facilities, and strengthening environmental education with local schools. These investments protect the living collection, enhance accessibility, and improve the experience across seasons.

The programme combines plant choice with knowledge sharing and creativity. Visitors can attend expert talks and guided presentations, including a feature by horticulturist Geoff Nichols, “Natural Corridors Through Suburbia,” exploring how suburban gardens can connect habitats for local biodiversity. Mixed media art workshops will run during the fair, offering practical, hands-on sessions that link creativity with conservation.

Specialist growers, volunteers, and Garden staff will be on hand to help visitors select hardy indigenous plants that suit local conditions and support biodiversity at home. A family-friendly atmosphere, food stalls, and practical advice make the fair an accessible entry point for residents across the Garden Route who wish to plant for place, habitat, and future water security.
