{pp}Life in the South Durban Basin is not easy. In this heavily industrialised area that has been gripped by recession for several years now, unemployment is high and daily life a struggle for most. But the communities of South Durban do not take this lying down.
The latest of a series of upliftment projects is the Durban South Community Computer Centre, based at the Austerville Library. Several local NGOs have partnered with the City and One Global Economy to create a free information hub for residents of the area. The centre will be open daily Monday to Saturday, and will remain open into the evening. Users will be able to access the Internet for free, and will be assisted by centre volunteers. A specially developed website, called The Beehive, will give users immediate access to vital information on health, money, jobs, law and more, along with tools and resources to make life easier. Several community-based organisations that have come together to create a centre that will cater to the needs of schoolchildren, young adults and families alike.
