According to Nielsen Sports South Africa, LIV Golf South Africa made an immediate impact in its debut year, ranking as the second most-watched golf event on SuperSport in the 2025/2026 season.
Nielsen Sports SA data shows the landmark event at Steyn City attracted a live unique audience of 186,771 viewers, while capturing over 90% of SuperSport’s golf viewership during the tournament window underlining its dominance among local audiences.
As the first LIV Golf event hosted on African soil, the tournament connected strongly with South African fans, combining elite international competition with a high-energy, entertainment-led format.
Richard Glover, General Manager of Southern Guards GC, said:
“For us as Southern Guards GC, this was always about bringing something meaningful home. To see the way South African audiences responded is a powerful reflection of what this event meant to the country. It reinforces why we pushed so hard to make this a reality.”
At the centre of the moment was Southern Guards GC, the all-South African team who brought LIV Golf to home soil. Competing in front of local crowds for the first time, the team’s presence strengthened the connection between the global stage and South African fans.
Beyond the broadcast success, the event also delivered strong economic and tourism impact, while showcasing South Africa as a capable host for world-class sporting events.
Nielsen Sports SA analysis highlights the scale of engagement and the rapid growth of LIV Golf within the local market.
Tumelo Selikane, Managing Director of Nielsen Sports South Africa, said:
“The performance of LIV Golf South Africa reflects a clear appetite for innovative formats that combine elite sport with entertainment. Delivering this level of reach and engagement in a debut year is a significant achievement.”
The success of the Steyn City event marks a major step forward for golf in South Africa, reinforcing the country’s place on the global sporting calendar.
Looking Ahead
Following the success of the 2026 event, LIV Golf South Africa will return to Steyn City from 22–25 April 2027, with tickets already on sale.
For Southern Guards GC, attention now turns to the next stop on the LIV Golf calendar - Mexico City (16–19 April) - as the global season continues.
