South African urban policy and practice to be interrogated by researchers
Written by: HSRC Press Save to Instapaper[Pressportal.co.za] On Thursday 03 August 2006, a first in a series of Urban Policy seminar events, hosted by the Development Bank of Southern Africa and the Urban Renewal and Economic Development (URED) research programme of the Human Sciences Research Council, will begin. These seminars coincide with the launch of the research-driven book DEMOCRACY & DELIVERY: URBAN POLICY IN SOUTH AFRICA, edited by Udesh Pillay, Richard Tomlinson and Jacques du Toit (HSRC Press, Cape Town).
The HSRC/DBSA collaboration is an investigation into the evolution of South African urban policy and processes since 1994, and seeks to deepen understanding of these policies and processes in our democratic dispensation. The book is the output of research into the state of the cities, undertaken by the URED research programme of the HSRC, and is the first of many projects planned together with DBSA. Members of the press are invited to attend the Gauteng event, which will take place in the Vulindlela Auditorium of the Development Bank of Southern Africa (DBSA) in 1258 Midrand from 9:30am to 12:30pm, followed by a light lunch. Seminars on the same theme, with various speakers, are planned in Port Elizabeth (04 August), Cape Town (07 August) and Durban (08 August). More details are available from the HSRC Press on (021) 466 8002. Overviews of urban policy issues will be presented by leading academics and practitioners. Dr Udesh Pillay from the Human Sciences Research Council will give an overview of the final report, published under the title Democracy and Delivery: Urban policy in South Africa before Professor Alan Mabin (Wits University) leads discussion around local government in South Africa’s larger cities. Ms Caroline Kihato (DBSA) will present an analysis of the influences on the evolution of South Africa’s housing programme, entitled “Reaching the poor?”, and Professor Philip Harrison (Wits University) will discuss integrated development plans and Third Way politics within the context of urban policy in South Africa. Sithole Mbanga from the South African Cities Network will comment on the research, before questions from the floor. Confirmation of attendance should be directed to Cynthia Malinga at DBSA on (011) 313-3330 or to Karen Bruns from the HSRC Press on 083 231 8326.
