Mall of the South Launches Urgent Mandela Day Blanket Drive to Collect 6 700 Blankets for the vulnerable in 22 centres in the South of Johannesburg.
As freezing winter temperatures grip Johannesburg, thousands of vulnerable individuals and families are facing the devastating reality of living without adequate warmth this season.
In response, Mall of the South, together with SOJO Helping Hands Foundation, Marist Brothers Linmeyer School and EPIC Foundation, has launched the #HelpThyNeighbour Blanket Drive an urgent, community-wide campaign aimed at collecting 6 700 blankets ahead of Mandela Day on 18 July 2026.
Running from 5 May to 18 July 2026, the initiative calls on shoppers, businesses, schools, community groups, and the broader public to unite behind one simple but powerful mission:
“No neighbour should face winter alone.”
With rising unemployment, increasing economic pressure, and harsh winter conditions affecting communities across Johannesburg South, the need this year is greater than ever.
Each blanket donated will provide warmth, dignity, and hope to individuals and families in need.
A Community Challenge
The campaign target of 6 700 blankets represents more than numbers it reflects lives that can be impacted and communities that can come together in the true spirit of Mandela Day.
Schools, businesses, churches, sports clubs, tenants, and individuals are encouraged to donate new or preloved blankets.
Drop-off point:
Mall of the South Lower Ground Level (L0), Entrance 2 near Bosch Service Centre.
The public is encouraged to:
- Donate a blanket
- Support or host collection drives
- Spread awareness using #HelpThyNeighbour on social media platforms.
As part of this initiative, Mall of the South tenant JAM Clothing has contributed 40 blankets and will further support the campaign through a community soup kitchen activation.
“Giving back to the community is deeply important to us,” said Cindy Chain, Head of Sports Marketing and CSI at JAM Clothing.
“We are honoured to partner with Mall of the South and support initiatives that bring hope, comfort, and care to those who need it most and we challenge all tenants."
Together, We Can Make a Difference
This Mandela Day, the community has the opportunity to turn compassion into action, one warm blanket at a time.
