The SA vs India T20 ‘Revenge Series’: SuperSport Viewership Soars Amid Talent, Pride, and Fan Engagement

The South Africa vs India T20 series has solidified its position as one of the most exciting events on the cricketing calendar. This year’s series, comprising four high-intensity matches, saw record-breaking viewership on SuperSport, as evidenced by the latest Nielsen Sports SA data.

Record-Breaking Viewership

The 2024 series achieved a total unique audience of 1.5 million viewers, reflecting a 194% increase from the 2023 series. Fans consumed 3.9 million hours of cricket content across all broadcasts, marking a 341% year-on-year growth.

The best-performing match drew a live total unique audience of 655,780, an 86% increase compared to 2023's top game. SuperSport also expanded its coverage significantly, broadcasting 129 hours of live and secondary content, compared to just 50 hours over two matches in 2023.

Beyond the Numbers: A Clash of Momentum

For South Africa, this series was a chance to reclaim pride after their loss to India in 2023. It also provided a platform for both teams to showcase rising talents and build momentum for future tournaments.

The rivalry, reignited after their intense 2024 ICC T20 World Cup final, energized fans across South Africa and India, proving once again that cricket transcends sport, uniting and inspiring global audiences.

Fans with Spending Power

Data from Nielsen Fan Insights highlighted that 39% of the cricket audience on pay-TV is aged 25-49—an economically active group with notable spending power. This presents a compelling opportunity for brands to connect with a dynamic and engaged fanbase.

Duncan Stead, Commercial Manager at Nielsen Sports SA, commented:
"The SA vs India series captivated audiences with fierce rivalry and outstanding talent. The impressive viewership numbers prove Proteas Cricket’s unmatched ability to draw diverse audiences and spark national pride. SuperSport’s extensive coverage highlighted the growing consumption of T20 cricket among an economically active demographic, offering a clear opportunity for brands and rightsholders to connect with this engaged audience.”

SuperSport’s Commitment to World-Class Coverage

SuperSport reinforced its reputation for excellence by delivering 129 hours of live matches and secondary broadcasts, ensuring fans experienced every moment. With DStv Premium leading viewership, the network demonstrated its ability to drive fan engagement to new heights.

More Than a Rivalry

As the Proteas prepare for upcoming tournaments, the SA vs India T20 series will be remembered for more than its thrilling matches. It stands as a story of resilience, the rise of new stars, and cricket’s enduring power to bring people together.
