Ensure You Insure Your Car

Submitted by: Claire Young
{pp}A proactive approach to car insurance, and the management thereof, ensures consumers obtain the maximum benefit from their policies, and are correctly covered in today’s environment.

In South Africa, it is estimated that some 60% of motor vehicles driving on our roads, are uninsured. If you have a collision with one of these cars, there is very little action you can take against the driver or owner and probably no chance that you or your insurance company will recover the money paid out for your losses and damages. With this in mind and the fact that car repairs are very expensive, it is wise to take control of your own insurance needs.

“The first prize is to comprehensively insure your vehicle. Alternatively, depending on your budget, at least insure it for Third Party, Fire and Theft or Third Party only,” says Corinne De Villiers, General Manager of AA Insurance. “In order to make the correct decision, it is vital that you understand your options.

Comprehensive insurance covers you for the theft of your vehicle, accident damage to your vehicle and for any damage you may have caused to other people or their property,” continues De Villiers. “Third Party, Fire and Theft cover is limited and covers your car for specified incidents such as damages caused by fire, explosion or lightning. Cover is also included for theft of your vehicle and any damage you cause to others. “You may not think your car is worth insuring, but what about the damage it could cause to others through accidents or collisions? Even just a little bump to another car can cost thousands of rands to repair.

It happens to the safest and most careful of drivers,” continues De Villiers Also important is that consumers are reminded that when applying for vehicle finance, banks and financial institutions insist on comprehensive insurance for the vehicle for the entire duration of the finance agreement. It is a compulsory part of the conditions of the credit agreement, and the insurance cannot be cancelled while the agreement is in force. “A key factor, which most people ignore when they shop around for short-term insurance, is that a low premium often means less cover. You need to compare apples with apples and understand all the inclusions and exclusions in the terms and conditions.

“It is important to review your insurance regularly and at AA Insurance, we always act in the client’s best interest and we will ensure that you get the cover that suits your needs. If you have not reviewed your policies recently, we suggest that you call us ASAP to do just that.” De Villiers concludes that in today’s pressing times where many families are under financial pressure and are required to cut expenses, they are often tempted to cancel insurance.

“We encourage consumers to consider their options first and as a minimum have Third Party cover to protect themselves to some extent from unscrupulous, uninsured drivers.” AA Insurance structures individual packages and gives trusted advice regarding your vehicle insurance.
