Wrap a child up in warmth. Support Think Local’s BIG COVER UP Winter Charity Drive

Think Local has partnered with five charities throughout the country for the BIG COVER UP Winter Charity Drive to help bring warmth to thousands of destitute children this winter.

Every winter, thousands of abandoned, orphaned, homeless and vulnerable children face the severe winter cold with little more than the clothes on their back. The BIG COVER UP initiative encourages people to donate blankets that will be distributed to needy children by the various charities.

The charities that will benefit from the BIG COVER UP are:

The Joshua Project (Jeffreys Bay) — A safe haven for street children;

Sinethemba Children’s Care Centre (Port Elizabeth) — A home for orphaned and abandoned children;

Kidstop Drop-In Centre (George) — A project which reaches out to community street children and their families across the area;

The Haven Night (Mossel Bay) — A centre that provides temporary shelter and support to the homeless;

and Khulani Children’s Shelter (Durban) — A home for children whose parents have died from AIDS.

Since 2007, Think Local has been donating blankets to The Joshua Project in J-Bay. The company’s Managing Director, Samantha Knowles explains: “We acquired a reputation among the local street children in the area that they’d be given a blanket if they came to our offices. At the time, our management and staff were also active in collecting winter clothing for them, after we often witnessed these poor children in ragged clothes huddled around a paint tin fire trying to keep warm during the cold winter nights.

“This year, we decided to reach out to the rest of the country and ask our readers, advertisers and the public at large to help bring warmth to those in need.  For us, this is no ordinary charity drive, but a group of people who feel compelled to help our communities’ children immediately as the cold weather approaches.”

You can support the BIG COVER UP by dropping off a blanket at Think Local offices or the charities locations throughout the country. In addition, the June/July issues will feature a special focus on the charities that benefit from the initiative. Think Local will donate a blanket on behalf of every business that advertises in this feature.
