AfriSam improving the quality of Math and Science education

Written by
School Principal, Learners, JumpStart Foundation Rep and AfriSam's Betty Masinge

South Africa’s leading construction materials group, AfriSam, donated much needed Mathematics and Science learning materials to pupils at Kingsway Christian School in Randpark Ridge, Randburg. This donation is part of the company’s contribution to the empowerment of learners and aims to improve the quality of science and mathematics education in South Africa.

The learning materials were purchased from Jump Start Foundation who had previously also helped the school. The books donated by AfriSam provides children with concepts that are necessary and helps them develop their thinking. Also, the content enables learners to work independently at their own pace and repeats concepts that are important and required in senior phases. This improves learner’s logical thinking and establishes a strong foundation in science and mental math.

“We hope that Kingsway’s pupils can now further improve their math and science knowledge through this donation, and we are excited to have made this contribution towards the future prosperity of South Africa,” says Betty Masinge, Enterprise and Supplier Development Manager, AfriSam.

The AfriSam donation comprised of prime learning materials for grades 4 to 7 learners. In addition to that, AfriSam also provided training and I-pads for teachers and staff at the school. The training will assist educators to utilize the learning resources effectively and the devices will be useful for teaching, marking and monitoring.

The school only had Jump Start learning materials at foundation phase, grade 1 to 3. Educators saw the great impact the books had on the kids’ performance. They also realized that kids were struggling to cope once they reached grade four and that is why they then reached out to AfriSam.

“We are very grateful for what AfriSam has done; we needed these books. The materials teach children many ways of bonding, multiplying, pattern and basic mathematics. This contribution is a great deal and will certainly go a long way.’ says Ntombi Lukhele, a grade four and five maths teacher at the school.

‘We are very excited; this donation means a lot to the school. With these materials, our learners will certainly enjoy math and science and perform better overall. The materials bring fun to the classroom and introduce significant concepts that create a strong foundation phase, certainly preparing the kids for higher education. We look forward to improved results’, concludes Mrs Kgethi Dlamin, Kingsway Christian School principal.
