Series of online sport summits launched

Submitted by: Gerrit Davids

South Africa’s sports business industry will be woken up from its slumber with the announcement of a series of online summits, which will take place during the months of May - July 2020.

The series will kick-off with the Football Africa Forum on 30 May 2020, starting at 12h00 -15h00, featuring all the key African stakeholders from national football associations, professional leagues, clubs, player unions, coaches, agents and experts on FIFA’s revised Solidarity Payment System.

Athletics will also have its own online summit, The Running Indaba, which is slated for 6 June 2020 from 12h00-15h00, to debate the current state of the sport around the world, with the most pertinent discussion being the postponement of the 2020 Olympic Games, as well as all other major running events, around the world.

The Indaba will be addressed by high profile administrators, executives, event organisers, sponsors, coaches, athletes, agents and service providers, respectively.

The 6th Annual Sponsorship Indaba will also take to the digital realm on 11 June 2020, starting at 12h00-15h00.

The Indaba, which will now make its return after a two year hiatus, will as usual, feature the industry’s premier thought leaders, brands, rights holders and service providers, all debating the new normal in this highly disruptive ‘commercial partnership-dependent’, environment.

Online summits will also be held for rugby, cricket, golf, cycling and horse racing respectively.

According to Gerrit Davids, MD of Gerom Media SE, “These summits will use the same well thought-out format to engage all key stakeholders in a highly interactive online environment, with programming being designed in such a way, that attendees will have 10-minute coffee breaks in between the panel discussions with lots of advertising and branding opportunities available for our commercial partners as offered by our live stream platform.”

Davids says, “The key theme of all these summits will evolve around the focus on what the new normal will bring to the business of sport, post Covid-19 and how all the key stakeholders are already being forced to pivot there “old proposition” into “a new normal”.

Various awards’ programmes focusing on the sports business industry will also be launched at these summits inclusive of the Pro Sports Awards, Sports Business Leadership and the Women in Sports Business Awards as well as the Sport Brands Index Awards, respectively.

The South African Sports Industry Alliance (SASIA) will also be launched at one of these Summits, which will serve as a platform for people involved in the business of sport, to find ways to optimally develop this sector across the country.
