Mobile’s Evolution from Brick to Smart Hub

Published: 22 February 2017

When the first mobile telephone call was made on 3 April 1973, nobody could have predicted how the very first 1.1kg mobile device would one day become the sleek centre of every consumer’s digital world.

“The evolution of the mobile phone, particularly in recent years, has been nothing short of ground-breaking,” says Craige Fleischer, Director of Integrated Mobility at Samsung Electronics South Africa. “Where it was first seen as a possible tool to take voice calls on the go, the mobile phone is now a communications tool, banking portal, social integrator, business enabler, entertainment device and so much more.”

While the first mobile telephone call was made in 1973 by Motorola Executive Martin Cooper, the mainstream arrival of mobile phones only took place ten years later. Mobile phones went on sale in 1983, priced well beyond the reach of the man on the street. Short Message Service (SMS) functionality arrived only years after that, with the first SMS sent over the Vodafone GSM network in the United Kingdom on 3 December 1992, when Neil Papworth of Sema Group used a PC to text ‘Merry Christmas’ to the Orbitel 901 handset of Vodafone’s Richard Jarvis.

Texting may have been the catalyst for what came next: companies and consumers quickly saw value in being able to choose between voice and text communications. Screens improved and phones became capable of sending images. Browsing, entertainment and cameras became standard mobile features and the era of the smartphone dawned. Over 250,000 separate patents now reside within the technology that mobile users take for granted today.

Samsung has led the market on many of the most important mobile phone developments, including: World’s First CDMA Phone (1996) World’s First MP3 Player Phone (1999) World’s First CDMA Camera Phone (2000) World’s First Phone with Colour LCD (TFT) (2002) World’s First Phone with Front-Facing Camera (2003) World’s First 5 MP Camera Phone (2004) Thinnest Mobile Phone - Ultra Edition 5.9 (2007) World’s First Quad core mobile device (2012) World’s First Curved Display Smartphone (2013) World’s First Smartphone with 4G LTE-Advanced Service - Galaxy S5 4G+ (2014) World’s First Smartphone with a Curved Edge Screen - Galaxy Note Edge (2014)   According to GSMA*, there are now over 4.7 billion unique mobile subscribers in the world and over 3.8 billion smartphones in use – forecast to grow to 5.8 billion by 2020. Smartphones are becoming more intelligent daily, with augmented reality, virtual reality and artificial intelligence adding to their features.

“The smartphone is clearly getting smarter and more integrated to everything people do today. As the world’s leading smartphone manufacturer, Samsung is continually innovating and improving design, functionality as well as the mobile ecosystem to take the mobile phone to frontiers no one dreamt possible,” concludes Fleischer.   For more information, please visit: https://www.gsmaintelligence.com/ http://www.mobileconnectivityindex.com/ http://www.samsung.com/de/news/pressemappen/Samsung_45_Years_of_Innovation.PDF

Have the Right Information at Hand Before Buying an Air-Conditioner

Published: 31 January 2017

For consumers, the purchasing of an air-conditioner tends to be a substantial investment for their household budgets, which is why it is critical that they make sure all the right bases are covered before acquiring such an appliance.

“There are some in-home factors that need to be taken into account before making a purchase like this. In addition, there are certain questions that the consumer should ask the supplier before committing to the deal,” says Michael McKechnie, Director of Digital Appliances at Samsung Electronics South Africa.

For starters, it is important to know the size of the room to be cooled in square meters, as buying something that is too big for the area will mean wasted money, while buying one that is too small will mean the room cannot be cooled effectively.

It is also necessary to understand whether there are areas in the room that might get excessively hot, such as a large un-tinted glass patio door, for example. As this will allow a great deal of sunshine into the room, it is usually recommended that a larger size product is installed to compensate.

Since the majority of domestic air-conditioners are split units – with both an indoor and an outdoor component – the customer or potential buyer must bear in mind the rules of the body corporate, if they live in a complex, as well as basic aesthetics if they live in a house. Accredited installers can assist with placement, but it is always better if the consumer already has a good idea of where they want it located.

They should also ask in-store about the energy ratings of their chosen product. The higher the energy efficiency, rating the more cost effective it will be in the long term. It also goes without saying that consumers must take into consideration the service and maintenance agreements and ensure that an accredited installer is used from the outset, in order to maintain the warranty for its full period.

“The additional factor to remember if you are unsure about committing to such an investment is that air-conditioners provide both cooling and heating, making them useful throughout the year. In addition, when compared to the cost of using a bar or gas heater, a good unit can save you up to 60% in terms of electricity costs,” states McKechnie.

“In the past, these appliances were viewed as a luxury item, but an increasing number of households today are viewing these as necessities, which means individuals are demanding better, more efficient products. It is for this reason that Samsung has begun placing its 360 Cassette units, which offer omni-directional airflow discharge for a premium cooling experience, at our brand stores. In response to the 360 Cassette’s popularity increasing so significantly in the consumer market, a smaller Mini Cassette version will be released in 2017,” he concludes.

Samsung Introduces Latest Quantum Dot Curved Monitor at CES

Published: 31 January 2017

Samsung Electronics has unveiled its new CH711 Quantum Dot curved monitor at the International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2017 in Las Vegas, demonstrating its continued leadership of the entertainment visual display market.

Over the past 50 years, CES has been the launchpad for a multitude of technologies that have helped change the world. Samsung has once again used this event to showcase its latest consumer solutions, from washing machines to monitors.

“Today’s multimedia consumers have high expectations and demand immersive participation that realises the full potential of the content they are consuming. Samsung’s 2017 line-up of Quantum Dot monitor range offers brilliant design, richer colour and deeper contrast than ever before,” says Mike van Lier, Director of Enterprise Business Division at Samsung Electronics South Africa.

A colourful, curved entertainment experience
The new Samsung CH711 Quantum Dot curved monitor is designed with gamers in mind. Available in 27- and 31.5-inch variations, scheduled for an early 2017 commercial release, the CH711 delivers vivid, visually stunning picture quality, regardless of the content being enjoyed.

Featuring 1,800R curvature and an ultra-wide 178-degree viewing angle, the CH711 makes content clearly visible wherever you may be in a room. Its ergonomic design also enables viewers to adjust the monitor’s horizontal and vertical positioning for optimal comfort. When combined with the standard RGB colour gamut coverage and 2,560 x 1,440 Wide Quad High Definition (WQHD) resolution, the CH711 sets a new standard for detailed colour appearance at any distance.

The CH711’s sleek and sophisticated 360-degree design complements any desktop or décor. Its clean, white chassis features a striking, three-sided, design that neatly hides its power and High Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) cables out of sight inside the stand’s neck.

The Quantum Dot monitor evolution
Designed specifically for professional and hardcore gamers, the 24- and 27-inch CFG70 curved monitors combine the visual refinement of Samsung’s Quantum Dot picture technology with the comfortable, ultra-wide view of its curved monitors to create the ultimate gaming experience. The CFG70 offers a host of gamer-friendly features, such as the ‘Gaming UX’ user interface.

Samsung’s other CF791 Quantum Dot curved monitor performs just as well when used for work, delivering unparalleled clarity and fine detail. Using Picture-by-Picture (PBP) technology, customers can load content from any connected HDMI or Display Point (DP) input source and position it anywhere on the screen. A complementary Picture-in-Picture (PIP) function also allows users to shrink and place content anywhere on the screen without losing resolution or visual quality. An integrated height-adjustable stand furthermore delivers ergonomic comfort and makes the CF791 ideal for any workstation or in any office environment.

Game on In order to celebrate the launch of its newest monitors, Samsung has offered CES 2017 attendees a first-hand opportunity to enjoy some friendly competition at the company’s interactive gaming zone. Thanks to interactive stations, visitors were given the chance to play several of today’s top video game titles on its CFG70 Quantum Dot curved gaming monitors during the event.

“Samsung has been the leader in the entertainment visual display market for a long time and these new products continue to keep us ahead of the competition. With these technologies having been launched at this year’s CES, South African consumers can look forward to experience these innovative monitors locally over the course of 2017,” concludes van Lier.

Virtual Reality Set to Make Your World More Exciting

Published: 22 December 2016

Samsung Electronics South Africa is paving the way for virtual reality to become mainstream. South Africans can find themselves captivated in a simulated 3-D environment, thanks to Samsung’s Gear VR powered by Oculus.

“New technologies are already changing the way people are communicating, marketing, playing games and living life. With Augmented Reality (AR), a digital element is overlaid over the real world as in Pokémon GO and Virtual Reality (VR), where users are immersed in a 3D virtual environment, there is practically no limit to the ways in which everyday life can be experienced,” says Craige Fleischer, Director of Integrated Mobility at Samsung Electronics South Africa.   The Gear VR teams up with a Samsung S7 handset to deliver a stereoscopic 3D experience for customers to explore in a realistic way.

It tracks the user’s movements, allowing them to move around and interact with computer-generated situations.   Innovative businesses world-wide are already giving their customers new experiences using VR technology. Hard Rock Hotel Ibiza, for example, partnered with Sublimotion, to host VR events where diners find themselves eating dinner in a range of exciting settings – even underwater. Another example; a US-based hotel and resort firm, Best Western takes prospective guests on 360-degree virtual walk-arounds of their accommodation before booking. Audi too is using VR in some of its international showrooms to give customers realistic views of various car configurations. Innovators are promoting VR headsets for educational purposes, where learners are able to discover new environments or participate in augmented reality experiments.

“The Samsung Gear VR, powered by Oculus, is designed to take VR forward, thanks to its comfortable fit, wide field of view and easy-to-use touchpad,” says Fleischer. “Gear VR is compatible with Samsung Galaxy smartphones and customers are able to enjoy optimised web browsing. Consumers are able to view 360-degree photos and videos in the Gear 360 VR Gallery or explore the Oculus store for an extensive range of VR games and content allowing them to travel across the galaxy, build expansive cities or battle unbelievable monsters,” Fleischer adds.

Samsung expands the boundaries of VR by making it possible for users to create, connect with and consume VR content using tools such as the high quality Gear 360 camera.   “If you thought VR was just for gamers, you’re mistaken. VR is about to change the way people experience virtually everything in the future,” concludes Fleischer.   Buy a Galaxy S7/S7 edge and get a Gear VR or Accessory Kit (wireless charger and clear cover) for free with Samsung Rewards.

Consumers will qualify for this promotion if they purchase a Galaxy S7/S7 edge within the promotion period; 14 November 2016 – 31 December 2016. They need to download the Samsung Rewards application and registered as a member on the Galaxy S7/ S7 edge. Terms and Conditions: http://www.samsung.com/za/offer/redeem-your-gear-vr/

Risk Spikes in Dispersed Enterprise Environment

Published: 22 December 2016

The enterprise business is moving out from behind its firewall into a dispersed Bring your Own Device (BYOD), Internet of things (IoT), cloud-based state. An Enterprise Mobility security strategy is important in controlling risk exposure in this new environment, to challenging organisations everywhere.

“The traditional enterprise model of the past is coming to an end. Where once operations existed at a secure central point, now IoT, cloud and mobility are putting corporate enterprises in a vulnerable position. In this disseminated enterprise state, the exposure to risk is as large as the mobile enterprise footprint,” says Paulo Ferreira, Director of Enterprise Mobility at Samsung Electronics South Africa.

Rapid changes in the technologies are moving into enterprises and may have caught many by surprise. Wearable devices and IoT endpoints have been proliferated within the workplace, while BYOD and consumer applications have overtaken enterprise-owned devices and methods as the productivity tools of choice.

According to the 2016 Mobile Security & Business Transformation Study from ISMG, 99% of enterprise workers currently use mobile devices to perform their work tasks. Wearables are also making their mark, with Gartner expecting worldwide wearable device sales to grow over 18% this year, generating over $18 billion in revenue. Smart watches, fitness trackers, head mounted displays, smart glasses, body cameras, smart wristbands and smart garments are coming to market fast and poised to make inroads into the enterprise.

“These rapid changes and the move towards a mobile, digital economy present a wealth of opportunities for organisations to innovate and enhance productivity. At the same time, they must seize control of this increasingly complex environment. It is of essence for organisations to have an Enterprise Mobility security strategy in place” says Ferreira.

One of the biggest challenges facing corporate security teams, is managing devices like smartphones and tablets that are used by employees both for work and personal use. Ferreira says: “Strategically managing and securing the mobile enterprise environment demands an enterprise-wide approach that encompasses technologies, policies and training. Business management and governance must focus on identifying the potential threats, auditing the current mobile environment, risk profile and preparing forward-looking strategies to mitigate those risks.”   Enterprises need advanced Enterprise Mobility Management (EMM) and Mobile Device Management (MDM) solutions that enable simple onboarding, full integration and management of all mobile devices within the company environment in order to support fast and cost effective roll out of new enterprise applications, as well as managing security on individual devices.

“Samsung has moved to address the hazards of this dispersed new environment through continual research and innovation into EMM, MDM and device security. Samsung’s KNOX defense-grade security platform addresses more than just security and device management – it includes subsets of offerings such as containerisation features, KNOX Customisation, bulk mobile enrolment and cloud based device management,” Ferreira concludes.   For more information, please visit https://www.samsungknox.com

Bringing the Internet of Things to Business

Published: 22 December 2016

Just about everyone has heard how the Internet of Things (IoT) will change lives across the globe by making our homes and buildings more efficient, our cars safer, our food supply more stable and the air people breathe cleaner. In addition, a recent study by 451 Group* shows that 65% of businesses are using the IoT to optimise their services and product offerings. The question is: how can companies get the most from the IoT to best benefit their business?

ARTIK™, Samsung’s integrated Smart IoT platform, was announced in May 2015 and provides fast, secure, interoperable and intelligent products and services to help organisations quickly turn IoT concepts into reality. The platform uses a hub of highly integrated System on Modules (SOMs) to incorporate processing, memory and wireless connectivity.

“The advanced ARTIK™ Cloud service collects, stores and acts upon data from any device or cloud service, giving businesses the opportunity to gain new insights into how their products are being used. These insights can then be utilised to generate new business opportunities,” says Paulo Ferreira, Director of Enterprise Mobility at Samsung Electronics South Africa.   All of this is secured with leading edge encryption, protected boot, hardened certificate storage and is equipped with a suite of tools and services for a truly end-to-end platform.

Faster Product Development, More Growth
Another challenge with delivering complex IoT solutions is the time, costs and risks associated with such projects. The Samsung ARTIK™ platform makes it easier to build IoT products and alleviates these challenges by unifying hardware, software, cloud, security and partner ecosystems in a single offering.   Samsung continues to build a strong ecosystem of global distributors, service providers and technology solution partners who are able help companies get their IoT innovations to market faster.   For example, Samsung ARTIK™ partnered with Naver to create a new voice-controlled smart home assistant. Likewise, at this year’s Korea Electronics Show, FS Studio shared an amazing demonstration of a spaceship toy that search for, recognise and respond to different objects. The gadget was built with a powerful neural net and runs on ARTIK™.

Furthermore, partners such as resin.io, Arduino and Ubuntu, among others, bring powerful tools and capabilities to the ARTIK™ platform that help to solve real problems that IoT vendors face. Samsung has also partnered with Arrow and Mujin to distribute ARTIK™, adding to its strong distribution partnership with Digi-Key to ensure the platform is available around the globe.   “Businesses are eager to add IoT capabilities to their products, but also understand the challenges of designing and building solutions on their own. By providing organisations with an integrated IoT platform, Samsung is helping companies focus on developing great ideas without having to worry as much about the underlying structure,” concludes Ferreira.

Samsung thinks the future is bright for IoT and can’t wait to see what you build. Visit https://artik.io to learn more.   *451 Group: http://www.prweb.com/releases/2016/06/prweb13510951.htm

Android for Work Hardened by KNOX on Samsung Devices

Published: 22 December 2016

Android for Work, a program that supports enterprise use of Android, along with Samsung’s KNOX mobile enterprise security platform, are now available on new Samsung devices to enhance the security of the mobile enterprise.

“Since people stay connected via their mobile devices, the lines between work and personal lives have blurred. Accommodating work and play on one phone is more than just a trend, it’s a necessity,” says Paulo Ferreira, Director of Enterprise Mobility at Samsung South Africa. According to Ferreira Android provides a leading solution for this through Work Profiles – a dedicated professional space that is separate from a user’s personal account, apps and data. “When this solution is combined with a Samsung device, it is a great offering, as Samsung handsets are protected by Samsung KNOX, a mobile enterprise security platform.”

The combination of Android for Work and Samsung KNOX is particularly useful for companies that have Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) or Corporate-Owned Personally Enabled (COPE) policies, where employees use the same device for personal and work usage. Work data in Android’s Work Profiles allows IT admins to apply policies to prevent data leakage and installation of apps from unknown sources, as well as protecting company data. The Android for Work program provides modern and effective safeguards to protect both the individual and the enterprise.   In order to ensure that the device itself hasn’t been tampered with or that only vendor-approved versions of the operating system (OS) are being run, data protection at the software level is necessary.  Software should be sitting on a trusted foundation and this is where Samsung KNOX comes into play.

Samsung KNOX is a defence-grade mobile security platform built into Samsung devices which extends Android’s software level protection by adding hardware level security mechanisms. By simply turning on the handset, one is protected with multiple layers of security from the hardware to the application level. Samsung KNOX monitors and ensures that the mobile device is protected against external attacks, malicious code or applications, as well as deviations from a trusted baseline. In addition, it can detect or protect against rooting (unlocking a device to access the back end of the OS).

Samsung KNOX helps guarantee the integrity of the device and Android for Work benefits from this. In addition, Samsung and Google work closely together to ensure that KNOX and Android for Work updates operate in tandem to stay ahead of emerging threats.

For organisations needing even more control over management and security of mobility, Samsung offers the KNOX Workspace, providing the most comprehensive set of security and management capabilities possible on a mobile device. It has received more government security accreditations and industry awards than any other solution on the market.   Android for Work hardened by KNOX features are now available on Samsung devices with Android OS 6.0 and above, including flagship smartphones.

Samsung’s Digital Hospital Management Systems Improve Efficiency

Published: 22 December 2016

Revolutionary treatment technologies are fast improving healthcare around the world. Supporting this, Samsung’s innovative digital hospital management systems further enhance patient-centric care and hospital efficiency.

A plethora of enhanced treatment technologies are entering hospitals and diagnostic accuracy is being developed through progressive methods. Samsung’s Digital Radiography and Ultrasound systems deliver vastly superior, detailed imaging for increased accuracy and visibility. The company’s mobile CT Scanner takes new treatment options into the Emergency Response (ER) or Intensive Care Unit (ICU), while Samsung’s compact In-Vitro Diagnostics tool offers easy blood sampling and a simple three-step testing. “Solutions such as these significantly improve direct treatment, but are not the only measures available to ensure the highest standards of hospital management and patient care,” says Mike van Lier, Director of Enterprise Business Division at Samsung Electronics South Africa.

Using the latest technology to develop the hospital environment and healthcare facilities can maximise the impact and offset investment in state of the art treatment equipment. New technologies such as digital hospital management systems, advanced digital signage, cloud-based tools, mobile health, medical imaging and diagnostics as well as digital environmental control enable hospitals and healthcare facilities to run more cost-effectively, with better control of resources and improved outcomes.

By reducing the waiting time, refining the accuracy of treatment and monitoring and optimising the management of resources and supplies, hospitals are able to reduce operational costs and modify outcomes. Integrated digital health platforms enable tracking and monitoring of treatments within a secure environment, supporting alerts in the event of anomalies. Smart Signage and Interactive Displays deliver information and services across the building in real-time.

Smart wireless local area networking (WLAN) solutions deliver seamless, ubiquitous connectivity and access throughout hospitals, allowing medical staff to access alerts, records and diagnostics wherever they are within the facility.

In line with Samsung’s vision – to inspire the world and create the future through innovative technologies, products and design that enrich people's lives and contribute to social prosperity – digital signage in the Medical field focuses heavily on the client experience in its healthcare portfolio.

“Around the world, our innovative healthcare solutions are positively impacting on hospital management and client care. By ensuring a patient’s information is digitally-enabled and easily accessible with seamless operations put in place, hospitals will not only meet next-generation patient expectations – they will also create an efficient, client-centred environment and advance hospital operations,” concludes van Lier.
