It’s All About Improved Quality of Life

Published: 04 April 2017

The world is turning to simpler, cleaner and healthier lifestyles as people start to focus on environmentally-conscious living. Although we are well into the 2017, it is never too late to start enjoying the best life has to offer.

“There is an increasing focus on wellness and improving one’s health in today’s world. These factors are becoming all-important to most people, especially among Millennials and post-Millennials, who believe more than previous generations in the value of living a decluttered life where, happiness and experiences are important,” says Michael Mckechnie: Director of Sales – Consumer Electronics Group at Samsung South Africa.

Samsung agrees with trendsetters that it is time to move away from onerous chores and overly-complex living. This is why our home appliance innovations focus on adding real value, reducing unnecessary effort and – of course – bringing streamlined design into homes to organise and enhance interiors.

Samsung’s home appliances support this growing desire for simple, fresh and smart choices, adds McKechnie.

Through technology and innovation, Samsung has enabled consumers to take the first steps in living a holistic life where the home front can be designed to empower users to free up their living spaces and here are some tips and tricks:   Improve your health and support weight loss goals by eliminating fried fast food from your diet.  Samsung’s Convection Microwave Oven with HotBlast™ and SLIM FRY™ technology delivers crisp snacks and quick meals without the fat and in minutes. This revolutionary oven also allows you to easily prepare homemade and wholesome alternatives to store-bought yoghurt and bread. Cut the costs of groceries and reduce the time spent preparing dinners by buying and freezing in-season vegetables and preparing frozen dinners in advance. Samsung’s Top Mounted Freezer refrigerator with Twin Cooling Plus offers ample space, quick and effective freezing and customisable control to make cost-saving food storage a breeze. Tidy up your kitchen by replacing a multitude of appliances, such as the deep fryer and bread maker, with a single, sleek Samsung Convection Microwave Oven.

Start every day with super clean linen and soft furnishings – without negative environmental impacts – by deep cleaning everything in Samsung’s AddWash™ Washing Machine with ecobubble™ technology. Efficient ecobubble™ technology mixes air, water and detergent to create bubbles that penetrate your laundry faster, helping you wash at cooler temperatures, which is better for the environment and your power bills. Delivering superior cleaning in under an hour, Samsung’s AddWash™ Washing Machine reduces the time needed for washing, enabling you to enjoy more family time or time on the things you value.

“Samsung is constantly raising the bar for smarter home appliances that enhance experiences. Our ever-growing home appliance range is designed to slot in with the modern quest for healthier, eco – friendly living and more time to do the things that matter in life,” concludes McKechnie.

Samsung Cleans Up at the Channelwise Awards

Published: 31 March 2017

Samsung South Africa has once again come out tops in the sixth annual Channelwise Awards. The annual awards ceremony recognises the top preforming vendors and distributors in South Africa, voted for by SME and enterprise IT channels.

This year, for the second year in a row, Samsung was named the top vendor in the Handheld Computers and Monitors categories as voted for by Consumer/SME Resellers. It was also voted as the best vendor for Handheld Computers and Monitors by Enterprise Resellers.

The survey, hosted by FutureWave Media goes out to a qualified database of over 5 000 Channelwise subscribers and is indicative of exactly which vendors and distributors the country’s resellers trust doing business with. At the same time, it gives a clear indication of how vendors are doing compared to their industry competitors   Over 1 600 resellers participated in this year’s Channelwise Awards, making it the biggest one yet. “Resellers are asked to choose the best vendor in a number of categories, rating their performance according to various criteria. This all takes place online, after which an independent auditor signs off on the results. Resellers are also given the chance to let the suppliers know what they think of them and what they could do in the future to better their service,” says Mark Davison, Editor of Channelwise.

“Because these awards are based on distributors and resellers that interact with Samsung on a regular basis, it is a clear testament that we go beyond just creating great products. We are professional, work well with partners and always available to assist as well as know our products to identify which is best suited for any given task. Winning the same awards for two years in a row just re-affirms that Samsung dominates in these categories,” concludes Mike van Lier, Director: Consumer Electronics (CE) at Samsung South Africa.

About Channelwize and Channelwise Awards
Channelwise is the magazine of choice for the IT channel of resellers in South Africa and English-speaking Africa. Now in its 22nd year of publication, it helps distributors, dealers, VARs, Systems Integrators, Solution Providers and Resellers to stay on top of the game in the dynamic and ever-changing IT environment. The Channelwise Awards are a vehicle through which resellers can vote for the vendors and distributors who they perceive to offer the best products, value and service.

Samsung’s Women Technical Programme was an ‘Invigorating Challenge’

Published: 08 March 2017

The electronics repair industry is a field that has traditionally been dominated by men, which is why Samsung Electronics South Africa has been running its Women Technical Programme with the aim of helping to level the playing field. To date the programme has trained 20 female students at their academy in Boksburg. The syllabus consisted of ten modules and eight weeks practical training, with new subjects being initiated on an on-going basis.

Nosipho Majola (23), from Thembisa, was one of the original group trainees and explains that after completing matric in 2011, she went on to study at the Ekurhuleni West College, focusing on electrical infrastructure, systems and principles, as well as digital and electronics.

“After college I spent a few months doing various jobs, seeking work and life experience, so I did a bit of everything and it exposed me to so much. At one stage, I waitressed at a convention centre where I had the chance to speak to a lot of influential people. That awoke a fire in me as I realised I also wanted to become an influential person. This made me determined to go back and study further,” Majola says.

To this end, she enrolled part time at the Samsung Electronics Engineering Academy and completed a two-year course in Electronics and Information Technology, after which she was selected to participate in the Samsung Woman Technical Programme.

“The most challenging part of the course was the fact that the work was so in-depth and we focused on a wide range of mobile devices and tablets. We had many modules to complete so it felt like I was running a marathon, at times I was worried that I wasn’t going to finish,” explains Majola, who persevered to meet the demands of the programme through her dedication and drive to succeed. “It was both invigorating and challenging.”

She offers a word of advice to other young women considering such a career move, pointing out that they should not allow the misperception that this is a male-dominated industry deter them. “Regardless of whether you are male or female, as long as you apply your own strengths, personality traits and skills you will be able to make a significant contribution to the sector.”   Majola has higher ambitions still, suggesting that she would like to study part time for a BSc in electrical engineering while she continues to gain experience in the workplace.

“It’s very encouraging to have such a huge company like Samsung willing to go out and select regular people like me to train – it demonstrates that they believe in us and are willing to invest in people. I certainly see myself growing within Samsung and I hope to get to a point one day where I can initiate programmes like the one I was involved in, so that I can help other youngsters to grow and develop,” she says.

Samsung’s Director: SSA Service, Richard Chetty believes that this first group of women can be the trailblazers for what Samsung hopes will become a flood of young female technical learners in South Africa.

“The most heartening thing is that from a social perspective, this course offers a genuine opportunity to empower these young ladies. We are now planning to have three intakes every year and we hope our proactive stance on this issue will result in other companies adopting similar programmes in the future,” concludes Chetty.

Samsung Wins Three Product of the Year Awards

Published: 27 February 2017

Samsung Electronics South Africa is proud to announce that it has received three ‘Product of the Year 2017’ awards in various categories. The Product of the Year (PoY) survey is the world’s largest consumer-voted awards, established 25 years ago in France and operates in 37 countries. The purpose of the PoY Awards is to guide consumers to the best products in their market and reward manufacturers for quality and innovation. In South Africa, the PoY seal is backed by the votes of 5,000 consumers. Winners are chosen in its respective category through a nationally representative online study conducted by Nielsen. Winning products also receive the right to feature the PoY seal for one year, showing the product’s leadership position among consumers. The awards were given to those Samsung products that users felt embodied and excellence in their particular categories. Samsung SUHD TV received the Television category award, Samsung’s Gear VR was voted Product of the Year 2017 in the Wearables category and the Galaxy S7 Edge top honours in the Mobile Phone category.

“Samsung is thrilled to receive the accolades, as they reinforce our commitment to adding value and leading the way in innovation and technology development. As these result are the voice of the consumer, the outcomes inspire us to continue to deliver ground-breaking products and solutions that meet the needs of our users,” says Michelle Potgieter, Director of Brand and Product Marketing and Communications at Samsung South Africa.   Product of the Year South Africa (POYSA) as an organisation promotes, recognises and celebrates innovation in consumer science and measures winners against strict criteria. Dedicated to helping consumers identify exceptional leading-edge products, the PoY ratings are polled from a base of over 5 000 local consumers. Winning organisations are considered the leaders in their field and their products are seen as a testament to quality and excellence.

Samsung’s SUHD TV is an authentic 4K, curved UHD TV that delivers an impressive features list including smart home connectivity capabilities. The Gear VR is one of the most immersive entertainment solutions available, enabling users to experience virtual reality like never before. Finally, the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge is a smart phone that offers the slimmest without compromising screen size and delivers a professional grade camera, coupled with effective water and dust resistance, as well as a dedicated security solution to provide around-the-clock security.

“These awards offer a level of acknowledgement from our customers that serves to emphasise the value these products add to the market. Samsung will now use these latest honours as inspiration to help us to continue not only meeting the needs of our consumers, but also leading the way in technology development,” Potgieter concludes.

Fourways Air-conditioning Opens Warehouse, Showroom and Training Facility

Published: 27 February 2017

Samsung South Africa’s biggest distributor of air-conditioning products and solutions, Fourways Air-conditioning, has taken its customer service offering to greater heights with the opening of a massive 4 200m² warehouse and training facility in Honeydew, Johannesburg.

The new building allows the company to house all its operations under one roof, facilitating enhanced stock control and product delivery. In addition, the new premises incorporate a showroom to display the latest Samsung innovations in air-conditioning.

Says Michael McKechnie, Director: Digital Appliances at Samsung, “We take great pride in our innovative, world-class Digital Air Solutions, featuring design and technology that improves lives. Equally important is the building and growing of strong relationships with partners such as Fourways Air-conditioning, in order to mutually succeed and grow in the exciting, unique South African landscape.”

Fourways Air-conditioning has been in operation for nearly 20 years and offers branches not only in Johannesburg, but in Cape Town, Somerset West, Durban, Port Elizabeth and Pretoria. A new branch is planned for Bloemfontein, after which the organisation aims to expand its operations into other territories, including Nelspruit.

“Fourways Air-conditioning has experienced considerable growth over each year of its existence. This is the result of fast, on-the-spot service to installers, long-term parts and service back-up to its customers and a successful on-going partnership with Samsung,” says Managing Director of Fourways Air-conditioning, Richard Perry.

“We are excited, as the new facility will offer us the ability to provide both theoretical and practical training. This means our dealers can send staff to our building to receive classroom tutoring which is supplemented with practical work on the appliances. We are also employing a full time trainer to assist in this, so we expect to increase value to the dealers from an installation and servicing perspective,” adds Perry.

The business will also offer targeted training focused on specific products. This will enable dealers whose technicians may need additional assistance with certain appliances, to obtain training specific to the relevant item.

Fourways Air-conditioning plans to obtain Sector Education Training Authority (SETA) approval for the centre. This will enable the company to offer skills development to previously disadvantaged people and thus provide a complementary service to the existing Samsung Engineering Academies.

“Our new premises position us perfectly to take advantage of some of the huge opportunities we have identified in the market for commercial appliances. To this end, we have begun spending more time talking to consulting engineers, architects and interior designers, to help them understand the Samsung products and the benefits these can offer their projects. Of course, the exceptional products Samsung currently delivers makes our lives very easy in this respect and we look forward to continuing our strong relationship for many years to come,” concludes Perry.   Fourways Air-conditioning’s new premises can be found in the Honeydew Business Park, 1503 Citrus Street, Honeydew, and Johannesburg.

Make Staying Indoors Fun with the Best in Smart TVs and Accessories

Published: 23 February 2017

While summer conjures images of swimming, sun-tanning and all kinds of outdoor activities, Samsung Electronics South Africa points out that there is just as much fun to be had indoors, if you make the most of your Samsung appliances. Samsung’s superior Smart TVs and accessories offer the ideal way to turn any summer evening or weekend into an indoor adventure.

Whether your ideal indoor escapade involves curling up by yourself and watching a good movie, entertaining friends, playing games with the whole family or sharing a ‘date night’ for two, Samsung’s high quality televisions create an experience that is unique as well as enjoyable.

“For starters, Samsung’s Smart Hub is designed to organise your content sources into easy to use panels you are able to view on the TV screen,” says Matthew Thackrah, Deputy Managing Director at Samsung South Africa. “It allows you to effortlessly navigate through streaming content, Web browsing and more.”

If you want to treat the family, why not get everyone together and have a gaming competition, suggests Thackrah. The Smart Hub’s Games Panel, provides easy-to-play, family-friendly games for everyone to enjoy on the big screen. “The Games Panel recommends various games for you to download and play. It features easy-to-use controls to enhance your Smart Hub gaming activities. It’s a great way of bringing family and friends together,” he continues.

Samsung’s Smart TVs, including the latest SUHD TVs with Quantum dot technology, connect you to live video streaming services like Showmax, Netflix and YouTube. “This means you are able to find funny cat videos to show to the family or catch up on your team’s greatest goals with your friends, simply by searching for what you want online. Alternatively, you can stream that classic comedy and revel in sharing it, along with some snacks and treats.”   Furthermore, if you really want to impress your guests, Thackrah says that Samsung’s Smart TVs may be set up to accept voice recognition, simply by using the microphone function on your remote.

“Of course, our TVs offer many other entertainment options too. It’s possible to turn your living room into a dance floor by streaming music, photos and even videos of that last great holiday through the TV, by using Smart View app to send material directly to the TV. Moreover, since multiple people are enabled to share their content to a single TV using the queue feature, why not have a competition to see who can find the best, the worst or the strangest song or video online?”

“Samsung’s TV products and accessories present such a wide range of possibilities that you need never be concerned about missing out on anything. It’s much easier to stay indoors or try out a classic ‘stay-cation’ this summer, while utilising Samsung’s hottest products to their full potential,” concludes Thackrah.

Genuine, Quality Devices are Gifts that Keep on Giving

Published: 22 February 2017

With 2017 in full swing, as our friends and loved ones engage in the act of giving and receiving for special occasions, Samsung’s smart devices are perfectly positioned to fulfil many of these wish-lists. Whether the gift you are purchasing is a smartphone, fitness device, 360 camera or one of Samsung’s many other electronic devices and appliances, you will undoubtedly be looking for the best deal you can find.

The trouble is that, while there are many bargains at any given time, inevitably some of these fantastic offers turn out to be too good to be true, simply because the products themselves are not genuine.

“Counterfeit goods have become an increasing challenge in South Africa, across a range of industries. Not only are these detrimental to the economy by replacing legal and taxable goods with fakes, but counterfeit products are of an inferior quality, meaning that software upgrades often don’t function and the devices do not work efficiently,” says Richard Chetty: Director for SSA Service at Samsung Electronics, adding that what looks like a good deal often ends up hurting consumers’ pockets in the long run.

Chetty points out, however, that there are some simple steps that consumers can take to ensure that the electronic device they are purchasing is legitimate.

The first step is to familiarise yourself with genuine Samsung products at any one of the company’s approved retailers or official stores. This will enable you to examine the products so that you can effectively note the physical differences between these and counterfeit devices. Always study the device itself before purchase; never rely purely on the packaging.

Chetty suggests that if you are unsure of a device’s legitimacy, you should immediately take it to a Samsung brand store or Service Centre for evaluation.   He adds that consumers making online purchases should be extra cautious. Ensure that you are buying from a reputable and recognised source, as opposed to an individual or illegitimate seller. In particular, beware of online traders that do not allow for returns, as these may not be genuine products.

Consumers can further protect themselves by ensuring they buy their Samsung products only from well-known locally approved operators. In addition, authorised dealers will be sure to provide you with the Samsung South Africa two-year warranty – anyone who doesn’t offer this, is not an authorised dealer.

“Counterfeit products may appear cheaper, but this is only in the short term. Genuine devices not only ensure peace of mind with their 24-month warranty policy, users also get access to Samsung’s full range of up-to-date and comprehensive technical and product support. So when the time comes to buy gifts for your loved ones, always remember the age-old maxim that states if a deal sounds too good to be true, chances are it is,” concludes Chetty.

Smart Displays Become Information Hubs at Pioneer Hotels

Published: 22 February 2017

Intelligent digital displays and advanced hospitality televisions are set to become the centre of the Smart Hospitality movement. Leading South African hotels are moving to harness these new technologies for greater efficiency and better service.

“Large hotels use more business technology than the average office does, so Samsung has focused on revolutionising the hospitality information technology (IT) ecosystem to enable hotels to run their operations more effectively,” says Mike van Lier, Director of Enterprise Business Division at Samsung Electronics South Africa.

A key focus area is guest-facing information and amusement. Modern hotel guests expect hotels to provide the same level of technology that they enjoy in their own homes. This means high-speed Wi-Fi and advanced, flexible entertainment options. “In-room content is a crucial aspect in successful hospitality management,” says van Lier. “This is why Samsung’s specialised Hospitality TVs deliver a complete platform for premium guest room information and enjoyment.”

“Guests can watch movies and TV shows from streaming services, login to their social media accounts and even push content from their mobile devices to the big screen. The system is easy to use and centrally managed, making it possible for the hotel to relay relevant information – from weather forecasts and details of on-site facilities, to notices of special events and guest messages – directly to the device. In future, we will see hotels integrating controls of air conditioning, lights and room service around the TVs, making Hospitality TVs the new smart hub of the contemporary hotel room. A number of leading South African hotels are now moving to install these Hospitality TVs to modernise their approach to in-room entertainment,” says van Lier.

Alongside smart Hospitality TVs, intelligent digital displays are upgrading marketing and information-sharing in hotel lobbies and conference venues. Samsung’s large format displays, video walls and digital signage deliver high quality visuals with simplified management systems, allowing hotels to easily update information and deliver a content-rich guest experience. In addition, Samsung’s durable Outdoor LED displays make outdoor branding and sponsored messages highly visible to a broader market.

Improving hotel efficiencies and guest service also requires connectivity and smart management systems. Free and reliable Wi-Fi access, now a top priority for guests, requires multi-channel enterprise-grade Wi-Fi. Samsung’s Wireless local area network (LAN) solution allows hotels to monitor the Wi-Fi network, even across multiple sites, in real time to verify that all is functioning properly. Samsung is the only company that can offer both high-density Wi-Fi integrated into state-of-the-art electronics including hospitality TVs and stunning visual displays such as video walls, conference room screens and digital signage. Staff are accessible throughout the hotel as Samsung’s private branch exchange (PBX) integrates desk and smartphones.

Another area where hotel operations stand to be improved and costs cut, is printing. “Hotels print far more documents than most businesses,” says van Lier. “A 350-bed hotel might print 250,000 – 300,000 pages a month. These include time sheets, rosters, guest registers and receipts.” Samsung’s high-volume printers delivering print speeds, versatile features and access to a variety of document and workflow solutions, are an important component of its overall hospitality solutions portfolio.

“In a digital age, smart systems will give hotels a competitive advantage. With this in mind, Samsung’s research and development teams have developed a comprehensive range of hospitality industry systems designed to address the specific needs of hotels,” van Lier concludes.   For more information on Samsung Hospitality Solutions visit:http://www.samsung.com/us/business/by-industry/hospitality/
