Samsung Electronics Delivers Air Conditioning that’s Effective in Summer and Winter

Published: 25 May 2017

Samsung Electronics South Africa has vast experience in the development of air conditioning and has long been committed to creating cooling solutions that are both powerful and convenient, thereby ensuring optimum comfort for users. However, what many consumers are unaware of is the fact that Samsung air conditioners are equally effective at warming up a room and they can perform more efficiently than the average heater. Although South Africa is renowned for its long, warm summers, but when the winter hits, the cold can really affect internal living spaces. The traditional method of dealing with the cold is to utilise a bar or fan heater, but these products tend to work best as personal heating appliances and are less effective when attempting to warm an entire room efficiently. Troy Gower, Business Lead, Digital Air Solutions at Samsung Electronics South Africa, points out that Samsung’s air conditioners may have a reputation for being cooling appliances, but they are just as good when it comes to heating a room. “You simply cannot obtain the same amount of comfort or efficiency in heating from another source, as these appliances are designed to control the whole room’s temperature. Moreover, an air conditioner allows you to maintain your desired room temperature more effectively too,” says Gower.

“Consumers may be concerned that an air conditioner will use more power, but even this is not necessarily the case. Our products have a built in inverter technology that sets the appliance to idle once the room reaches optimal temperature, switching on again only if the temperature drops below this level. A heater, on the other hand, is likely to remain on throughout the day in order to keep a room warm, which uses a lot more electricity.” He adds that another, intangible benefit of using an air conditioner for heat is that by more consistently controlling the temperature of the room; you are less likely to get ill from constant changes in temperature. In addition, Samsung’s premium products have ‘Virus Doctor’ built into them. This technology promotes clean air through a simple plasma ion, which is able to eradicate 99% of airborne germs. One concern consumers may have is that purchasing an air conditioner is a much larger investment than buying a simple heater. Gower suggests that it should be remembered that such an appliance will be useful throughout the year, heating rooms in winter but will also be able to cool them in the long summer months.  “Ultimately, Samsung is committed to creating air conditioning solutions that are not only powerful and convenient, but that ensure optimum comfort in both winter and summer, all while delivering peak energy efficiency, which translates into lower electricity bills for consumers,” concludes Gower.

Samsung’s Curved Monitors are Ideal for a Range of Computing Tasks

Published: 16 May 2017

With most solutions, the part we use the most would also be the part we spend the greatest amount of money on. Yet when it comes to a home computing system, it is inevitably the monitor that receives the least attention when people consider upgrading or buying a new one. This is probably because people seldom consider how the display they use affects the overall experience of using the computer. A bad monitor can cause tiredness and even eye-strain if used too often, while one that offers fewer colours can negatively impact on a gamer’s enjoyment. For these reasons people have begun demanding screens that will do justice to whatever the user wants to watch, leading to a significant shift in the development of displays in recent times.

Focus has now been placed not only on better resolution, but also on improving the brilliance and the colour gamut it is able to reproduce. “Samsung understands that user demands – whether related to work, leisure or the increasing trend towards gaming – are different today. For this reason, we have introduced a range of curved monitors designed to enable users to obtain the full benefit of this shape. Our three top displays in this regard offer something to the entry-level, premium and gaming-focused consumer,” says Mike van Lier, Director Consumer Electronics at Samsung South Africa. The C24F390 essential curved monitor is a black monitor, designed to deliver increased viewing comfort and entertainment and has a recommended retail price (RRP) of R3 299. Samsung’s advanced curved monitor, C27F591, is a stylish designed screen in silver-white, which offers a deeply immersive viewing experience and has a recommended retail price (RRP) of R5 999.

Another one of Samsung’s top monitors to look forward to is the 27 inch C27FG70, which is specifically designed to operate as a gaming monitor and delivers both a super-fast response time of just one millisecond and extremely vibrant colours. Beneficial for gamers who are prepared to spend more to get the most out of their gaming experience, this monitor retails at an RRP of R12 999 and will be locally launched in June 2017.

While curved monitors are all the rage at present, having a curved display allows the user to truly obtain the full benefit of the curve for a truly immersive experience. In particular, this makes viewing easier on the eyes, something that is crucial if you spend hours at a time in front of it, regardless of whether you are working or playing. “All three of these monitors offer not only the improvement of a curved screen, but also Samsung’s Quantum dot technology that provides a contrast ratio of 3000:1.

This means that whether you are using it for work, for watching movies or for tackling the latest game, the technology of these monitors will provide you with an exceptional viewing experience,’’ van Lier concludes.

Samsung Electronics Announces First Quarter Results

Published: 05 May 2017

Samsung Electronics has announced financial results for the first quarter ended March 31, 2017.

Samsung’s revenue for the quarter was KRW 50.55 trillion (R594 billion)*, an increase of KRW 0.77 trillion (R9 billion)* YoY, while operating profit for the quarter was KRW 9.90 trillion (R116 billion)*, an increase of KRW 3.22 trillion (R38 billion)* YoY.  In the first quarter, sales for the memory and display businesses increased, owing to high ASPs and strong sales of premium products. However, revenue from the mobile business decreased due to a decline in flagship product sales. Profits were driven by the components businesses, namely the semiconductor division and the display panel segment.  The memory business posted significant earnings growth, both YoY and QoQ, led by favourable supply-demand conditions and sales growth of premium high-density enterprise SSDs. The System LSI business improved its earnings on the back of increased sales of application processors for flagship smartphones and greater demand for image sensors and display driver IC (DDI). For the display panel business, LCD maintained solid earnings QoQ due to robust sales of large high-resolution panels under favourable ASP conditions. Overall OLED performance improved YoY, due to strong demand, and slightly improved QoQ as a result of increased sales of new flexible products. For the IT & Mobile Communications (IM) Division, earnings declined QoQ due to price adjustment of the Galaxy S7. As for the Consumer Electronics (CE) Division, earnings for the TV business declined YoY due to higher panel prices. Regarding the recently acquired Harman, its earnings were consolidated into Samsung’s first quarter results beginning March 11. As a result, its impact on the first quarter financials was minimal. Looking ahead to the second quarter, the company expects to achieve growth on the back of continued robust memory performance together with improved earnings from the mobile business following the global rollout of the Galaxy S8 and S8+. For the components businesses, semiconductor earnings growth is expected to continue.

This will be driven by solid demand for high-density DRAM and SSDs in the server market, increased shipments of 10nm AP, and sustained strong demand for image sensors and DDI. As for the display business, the company will focus on fulfilling strong demand for flexible OLED panels, and look to maintain profitability in LCD through enhanced cost reduction. For the set businesses, operating profit is expected to improve in the mobile business following the global expansion of the Galaxy S8 and S8+. In the CE Division, earnings will likely improve with the launch of QLED TV and strong seasonal demand for air conditioners. Moving on to the outlook for the full year ahead, the company expects overall earnings to grow YoY. This will be led mainly by the components businesses based on favourable supply-demand conditions for memory and greater shipments of OLED panels. The set businesses, meanwhile, will focus on maintaining profitability through expanded sales of flagship products. For the memory business, amid strong demand for servers and mobile devices, the company will look to maintain profitability by enhancing cost competitiveness through sales of 1xnm DRAM and 64-layer V- NAND. Meanwhile, the possibility of an increase in the industry’s supply of 3D NAND in the second half of 2017 exists. For OLED, revenue is expected to grow YoY due to an increase in the supply of flexible panels in the second half. However, in the mid- to low-end segment, the company anticipates possible competition from LTPS LCDs. For the mobile business, market competition is expected to intensify in the second half. Against this backdrop, the company will strive to maintain profitability through robust sales of the Galaxy S8 and S8+ and the launch of a new flagship smartphone in the second half. Moreover, Samsung will also look to sustain profitability in the mid- to low-end segment by launching new products and streamlining the line-up. For the TV business, Samsung will focus on increasing profitability by expanding its high-end line-up, including ultra-large size and UHD TVs. Additionally the home appliance business will continue to secure new sources of revenue by increasing investments in the B2B segment. Looking at the mid- to long-term, the growth of IoT, AI and automotive businesses in the IT industry is expected to drive demand for components, particularly high-performance energy-efficient memory products, SoCs and sensors, as well as flexible OLED panels for new form factors.  Meanwhile new business opportunities are expected in the set business with developments in cloud, AI and connectivity solutions for smartphones and smart home products.  In response to these paradigm shifts, the company is aware of the need to strengthen its capabilities via strategic investments and M&As. However, uncertainties in the business environment may pose challenges.  Total capital expenditure (CAPEX) executed in the first quarter was KRW 9.8 trillion (R115 billion)*, including KRW 5.0 trillion (R59 billion)* for the semiconductor business and KRW 4.2 trillion (R49 billion)* for the display segment. Although the capex plan for 2017 has not been finalised, the overall annual capex is expected to increase significantly particularly for investments in V-NAND, System LSI and OLED.

Differentiated Chips & Stable Demand to Drive Profitability
The Semiconductor business posted KRW 6.31 trillion (R74 billion)* in operating profits on consolidated revenue of KRW 15.66 trillion (R184 billion)* for the quarter. Samsung improved earnings in the first quarter in both DRAM and NAND by focusing on high-density and value-added products for datacentres, enterprise SSDs and flagship smartphones. Even amid slower demand due to weak seasonality compared with the previous quarter, the prices of memory products remained strong due to limited supply. For NAND, Samsung continued to post solid growth in the quarter by actively meeting demand for high-density server SSD over 4TB and mobile products over 64GB and by expanding 48-layer V-NAND supply. On the DRAM side, strong demand for datacentre DRAM and customers stocking up to pre-empt any market uncertainties in the second half have contributed to solid supply and demand and strong pricing. The company’s efforts to enhance profitability through cost competitiveness in expanding the 1xnm process also boosted gains in the first quarter.  Looking ahead to the second quarter, while overall demand is expected to be solid due mainly to demand for high-density server SSD, overall supply will remain tight due to constraints on the industry’s 3D NAND supply. However, Samsung will improve profitability and product competitiveness by expanding 48-layer V-NAND supply and mass producing 64-layer V-NAND.

In DRAM, with the expansion of new server platforms in the market, demand for high performance server DRAM over 64GB is forecast to increase. New mobile device launches and adoption of higher density DRAM in the second quarter will increase demand for mobile DRAM. Samsung will remain profitable with high performance, high value-added chipsets. In the second half, overall supply and demand in the memory market will be stable amid peak seasonality and new mobile devices being released in the market. However, tight supply-demand conditions may change due to possible expansion of industry supply. With regards to the System LSI business, Samsung improved its earnings in the first quarter on the back of strong sales of APs, DDIs and image sensors for flagship smartphones and 14nm APs for mid- to low-end smartphones. In the second quarter, the company expects to secure growth with solid market demand for 10nm APs, image sensors and DDIs. For 2017, System LSI will diversify its 14nm product line-up for automotive, IoT and wearable industries and produce differentiated products with innovative technologies

Display Panel Segment Maintains Solid Performance
The Display Panel segment posted KRW 7.29 trillion (R86 billion)* in consolidated revenue and KRW 1.30 trillion (R15 billion)* in operating profit for the quarter. For OLED, earnings improved YoY due to higher utilisation rates driven by strong demand while also gaining QoQ due to increased shipments of flexible displays and strong demand for rigid OLED panels. For LCD, the company maintained solid earnings QoQ by increasing sales of large-size high-resolution panels under favourable supply and demand conditions. An expansion in the portion of value-added LCD products, particularly large-size UHD panels, helped strengthen profitability for the quarter. Looking to the second quarter, the company plans to actively address the expected continuous rise in demand for OLED panels, including flexible displays. For LCD, demand for large-size and UHD panels is forecast to continue and the company will focus on securing profits through expansion of value-added products, including ultra large-size and curved panels, and by improving yields and reducing costs. For 2017, although YoY revenue growth in the OLED business is forecast on the back of increased flexible panel shipments in the second half, growing competitiveness from LTPS LCD panels against OLED in the mid- to low-end segment will present challenges. For the LCD business, under expanding market conditions the company will continue to focus on strengthening profitability and competitiveness through value-added and differentiated products such as frameless and curved TVs.

Flagships Sales Expansion to Strengthen Mobile Leadership
The IM Division - comprising the Mobile Communications and Networks Businesses - posted KRW 23.50 trillion (R267 billion)* in consolidated revenue and KRW 2.07 trillion (R24 billion)* in operating profit for the quarter. While smartphone and tablet market demand saw a slight decrease QoQ due to seasonal effects, smartphone shipments for the division slightly increased. This increase was largely due to the newly released Galaxy A 2017 series and solid sales in the mid- to low-end segment in emerging markets. However, overall profit for the division decreased due to price adjustments of Galaxy S7 and S7 edge. Looking ahead to the second quarter, while market demand for smartphones and tablets is forecast to remain flat, the worldwide rollout of latest flagship models, Galaxy S8 and S8+, is expected to help the division increase revenue and profit QoQ, while smartphone shipments are expected to remain flat due to decreased sales of mid- to low-end smartphones. The Galaxy S8 and S8+, which were launched on April 21, show robust initial sales. As for the year ahead, Samsung anticipates market demand in smartphones to slightly increase with solid replacement demand growth in the mid- to high-end segment. However, competition is expected to intensify with newly launched smartphones in the market. The company will aim to improve performance YoY by maximising sales of the Galaxy S8 and S8+ and successfully launching a new flagship smartphone in the second half. In addition, the company will maintain profitability in the mid- to low-end segment. For the Networks Business, the company will seek growth through the continued rollout of LTE services in new markets around the world, expanded business opportunities with next generation networks, including IoT and LTE-A Pro, and preparation for 5G broadband services.

Consumer Electronics to Focus on Premium Products
The Consumer Electronics Division, including the Visual Display and Digital Appliances businesses, posted KRW 10.34 trillion (R122 billion )* in consolidated revenue and KRW 0.38 trillion (R 4 billion)* in operating profit for the first quarter.   In the first quarter, the TV market is projected to decline QoQ due to weak seasonality as well as decreased demand in the European and Latin American markets. Although the company achieved sales growth and maintained its leading position in the premium market thanks to its high-end product line-ups including Quantum Dot TV and curved TV, profit declined YoY due to increased panel prices and currency fluctuations.

For the appliances business, sales improved YoY led by continued growth in the North American market and increased sales of innovative premium products such as Chef Collection refrigerators and Activewash™ washers. However, earnings remained flat YoY due to investments in the North American B2B market. Looking to the second quarter, TV market demand is projected to show a slight decrease YoY due to sluggish demand mostly in Europe. Under these circumstances, Samsung will aim to secure profitability and solidify its market leadership by expanding its premium TV line-ups including UHD and curved TVs, as well as beginning sales of new premium products such as QLED TVs and The Frame. As for the Digital Appliances Business, the company will strengthen its partnership with retailers and expand sales of seasonal products, including air conditioners, and focus on the launch of new products such as Family Hub 2.0 refrigerators and FlexWash washers in the second quarter. For the TV market in 2017, demand is forecast to slightly increase due to recovery in emerging markets and strong UHD TV demand. While market competition is expected to intensify, Samsung will focus on sales of premium products to solidify its leadership in major markets.  As for Digital Appliances in 2017, Samsung will strengthen its B2B business by making full-scale advancement into the North American builders market, boosting online sales through key distribution channels, and expanding sales of premium products to achieve stronger performance.

Get tech skills with Samsung

Published: 03 May 2017

It is a well-known fact that there is a serious skills shortage in South Africa and in an attempt to combat this, Samsung South Africa provides various programmes set up to address this need. “In November 2015, Samsung South Africa initiated its Samsung Women Technical Programme, where twenty female students from previously disadvantaged backgrounds were chosen from a group at the Samsung Engineering Academy in Ekurhuleni. They had already undergone training on Samsung’s products and appliances and were then selected to further their skills in smartphone repairs,” says Richard Chetty, Director of Services at Samsung South Africa. Of the twenty, sixteen have been certified and now work at Samsung Service Centres.

“Besides giving these women a valuable life skill, we wanted to encourage them to consider a career in an industry that has been predominantly male dominated,” he continues. Last year the company expanded its programme to include females from grades eight to ten that will be taken through a three year theory course combined with a six month practical course. The idea behind this project is to give the women a solid life skill that will enable them to be more employable.  “We don’t just want to train young women, we want to ensure that their hard work pays off by assisting them from

The idea behind this project is to give the women a solid life skill that will enable them to be more employable.  “We don’t just want to train young women, we want to ensure that their hard work pays off by assisting them from grassroots level all the way to finding employment – or even better, open up their own businesses and in turn employ others from disadvantaged communities,” he adds. In keeping with gender equality, Samsung also launched its Boys to Men programme this year, which works similarly to the Samsung Women Technical Programme, except that it focusses on young men in rural areas. “Creating awareness on the new course has not been easy as many candidates don’t have access to the Internet nor do they have a TV or radio. Newspaper adverts and social media sites like Facebook seem, however, to be working well,” adds Chetty. The plan also aims to give men under the age of 25 years a decent set of skills that they can take with them into the job market – proverbially turning boys into men.  In addition to cellphone and smart TV repairs, some recruits are being trained to fix fridges and freezers as well.

These courses, however, are far more technical because the devices use gas and the technician requires a solid Science background. “The aim of the training is to teach these young men and women about the basic components that make up certain devices, so that when they are faced with a fault they can identify the problem and find a solution. It also gives them a solid grounding in the electronics field and a step-up should they decide to specialise further in this career path,” Chetty concludes.

Urban Design Trends Demand Sleeker Appliances

Published: 25 April 2017

Modern city living is forcing urban professionals to look at sleeker, smaller interior furnishings and appliances to make the most of their space without sacrificing style. There has been an important shift in design requirements as professionals move into miniscule living units but desire smarter, better functioning and more stylish electronic devices.

“This changing need is driving a new approach to the traditional manufacturing of fridges, washing machines, ovens, TVs and even utilities such as air conditioning units. Samsung designers have long realised that modern appliances cannot be allowed to clutter the living space, instead they should complement the décor, take up minimal space and offer a broad range of advanced technological features that enhance the life of the consumer,” says Michael McKechnie, Director: Consumer Sales at Samsung South Africa. Samsung’s 360 Cassette air conditioning unit is an example of how the company approaches space-saving and aesthetically pleasing interiors. The air conditioner features an omni-directional airflow emission, which eradicates cold air drafts and increases cooling efficiency for a truly premium experience. In addition to its superior performance, the Samsung 360 Cassette air conditioner boasts an elegant circular form and is ceiling mounted, leaving much-needed floor or wall space free.

The compact and power-efficient Samsung 360 Cassette received the Product Design award at the IF Design Award 2016 and was a star at the ARBS Exhibition in Melbourne, drawing tremendous attention and interest from engineers, architects, consultants and installers.  “Products such as the 360 Cassette air conditioning unit demonstrate that industry-leading functionality, premium design and energy efficiency are still possible within the space constraints of cosmopolitan lifestyles,” concludes McKechnie. For more information, visit http://www.samsung.com/za/news/local/samsung-electronics-transforms-air-conditioning-with-the-new-360-cassettes-circular-design/

Samsung Sponsors Mettlestate eSports Gaming Championship

Published: 25 April 2017

The Samsung Galaxy Counter Strike: Global Offensive (CS:GO) Championship, sponsored by Samsung, is currently underway and will conclude with the final match on 7 May 2017. The winning team of this multiplayer first-person shooter video game will be walking away with, not only the top honour, but also R1,000,000.00 - the biggest prize ever for a single eSports title in South Africa.

“Samsung shares the gaming thirst and with our vision, endurance and focus on strategy to improve people’s lives, what better way to do it than by getting involved and assist in building the future for gaming locally,” says Craige Fleischer, Director: Integrated Mobility, Samsung South Africa. Counter Strike: Global Offensive has been the benchmark of game players’ skills worldwide, with global teams continually proving their ability and strategies in tournaments. Organiser and host of the online gaming event, Mettlestate, has partnered with Samsung Mobile in this sponsorship deal to bring the local championship to realisation, offering South African gamers a larger platform to display their skills and to further create awareness of eSports and gaming possibilities. eSport is an ever growing activity, not only as a pastime, but as an occupation.

A great number of individuals are inspired to become professional gamers, developers, designers and writers, choosing the gaming industry as a career path.   Worldwide eSports revenues are projected to reach approximately $1.1 billion by the end of 2019, according to a Newzoo market report*. It is a clear indication that there is a market for it and that consumers are interested. Compared to the international market, eSport is but an infant locally, but interest of South African gamers and brands in the competitive gaming scene is showing stable and speedy growth. “It is great to see South African eSports starting to take off because of companies, like Samsung, lending their support and investing in the industry,” says Barry “Anthrax” Louzada, Director at Mettlestate. “With Samsung - a world-renowned technology brand with premium devices - as a partner, eSport can only go from strength to strenght. Samsung’s endorsement means that the company has growing intrest in the industry and the various opportunities it has to offer millennials.”The Samsung sponsorship of the tournament is not only providing monitory

The Samsung sponsorship of the tournament is not only providing monitory assistance, but also sponsoring Samsung products that are relevant to the gaming fraternity. These devices are becoming sought after accessories as eSports expands and develops into a more involved practice.    “Our mobile technology and flagship devices, such as the Samsung Gear VR, Gear 360 camera and our latest Galaxy S8 smartphone, allow consumers to have the ultimate gaming experience. Gaming is a serious business and gamers are looking to buy only the best devices possible to ensure them the best results. And Samsung is the best. Our immersive products amplify play by bringing fans and participants closer to the mettle of the game, capturing the spirit of gaming,” Fleischer concludes. * https://newzoo.com/

Samsung’s 2017 QLED TV Line-up Awarded UHD Alliance Premium Certification

Published: 25 April 2017

Samsung Electronics has announced that its 2017 QLED TV line-up has been certified by the UHD Alliance (UHDA) as ULTRA HD PREMIUM™. The certification encompasses the 2017 QLED TV portfolio, including the Q9, Q8 and Q7 models.“It’s an honour to receive this stamp of approval from the UHD Alliance,” said MS Kim, Executive Vice President of Visual Display Business at Samsung. “We are proud to continue offering our consumers a premium Ultra HD home entertainment set up with our 2017 QLED TV lineup.”The UHDA’s ULTRA HD PREMIUM™ logo identifies products and services that meet or exceed strict performance levels for 4K resolution, high-dynamic range (HDR), and wide colour spectrum.

8 Galaxy S8 Features You Should Know About

Published: 25 April 2017

Providing users with an unconfined mobile experience, the new Galaxy S8 and S8+ feature a refined, ‘unboxed’ design, enhanced security with new biometric technologies, robust entertainment capabilities and an intelligent new interface to enhance the way people interact with their phone. This is according to Craige Fleischer, Director Integrated Mobility at Samsung South Africa, who highlights the top 8 features of the S8 below.

Refined Design
“The Galaxy S8 builds on Samsung’s design heritage with a large Infinity Display, a bezel-less, dual-edge display that takes up more than 80 percent of the phone’s front screen,” he says. “Visually obtrusive elements are minimal, resulting in more tangible screen space. An invisible Home button embedded underneath the screen functions just like a physical button while Recent and Back buttons are now customisable soft keys.” Available locally in three colours including Midnight Black, the all-new Orchid Gray and Maple Gold, the Galaxy S8’s subtle curvature flows from the front of the device to the back to create a more ergonomic grip ideal for one-handed operation. The phone’s camera, fingerprint scanner and heart rate sensor have been incorporated on the back of the device in a way that minimises protrusions, ensuring a sleek aesthetic at any angle.

One Unified Experience
Designed around the Infinity Display, the UX of the Galaxy S8 was developed to add convenience and enhance the flow of user interactions. Like the display itself, the UX is seamless, unifying visual and audio components to create one continuous experience. The default wallpaper of the customisable Always On Display complements the colour of the phone, while its aesthetic transitions smoothly to the Lock and Home screens. Meanwhile, a new vertical swiping interface provides seamless navigation between the Home and App screens. Even the phone’s app icons and typography incorporate the Galaxy S8’s design language through a play of continuous curves and lines. Its brand sound “Over the Horizon” and ringtones have also been updated to better harmonise with the design of the device.

See More, Scroll Less
“The stunning Infinity Display of the Galaxy S8 is 18 percent larger than the display of the Galaxy S7, making for a noticeably more immersive viewing experience,” says Fleischer.  When watched in landscape mode, 21:9 movies fill the Galaxy S8’s 18.5:9 display, while the black bars above and below the picture are minimised, increasing the viewing area by 36 percent, compared to the Galaxy S7. This, along with the phone’s High Dynamic Range (HDR) Premium capabilities, enables users to see content exactly as the creator intended. Gaming experiences, too, are enhanced, as any game that supports 18.5:9 full screen mode is automatically optimised to fill up the entire screen. “The Infinity Display also makes it easier to see and do more from a single screen without having to scroll as often. Optimised for multi-window usability, multitasking is made easy, even when using the phone’s full keyboard. The Galaxy S8’s new Snap Window feature enhances productivity by allowing users to pin a specific area from a recent app to the top of the screen, and continue using the area below it.” In addition, the Infinity Display is protected with Corning Gorilla Glass 5 which is impervious against scratches and external impacts.

Great Photos, In a Snap
The Galaxy S8 builds on the Galaxy foundation with its advanced camera, which offers multi-frame image processing. With this technology, the camera takes multiple photos in rapid succession instead of just one, then selects the clearest image and uses the others to reduce the blur. This enhanced image processing ensures that shots taken when the subject is moving, in low light or when zoomed in are clear and vibrant. The dual-pixel sensor technology, wide aperture and fast autofocus of the 12MP F1.7 rear camera work together to create beautiful photographs even in low-light conditions. The 8MP F1.7 front camera has been equipped with enhanced autofocus features and facial recognition technology that can recognise and track faces to provide clear, focused selfies, regardless of the distance between the user and the camera. “With an easy-to-use filter setting, users can enhance their photos by selecting from a variety of filters, including Auto Filter, which automatically selects one optimised for their photo. Animated stickers and stamps can also now be applied to images when taking photos, right from the native camera app.

The camera’s UX has also been optimised for one-handed operation,” Fleischer explains.

A New Way to Interact
Although Bixby, Samsung’s new intelligent interface, is continuously being developed, it was created to enhance the way people interact with their Galaxy S8. The intuitive and comprehensive interface leverages contextual awareness to learn users’ habits and provide related information, and is easily activated with a press of its dedicated hardware button or by saying “Bixby.” With its multimodal functionality, its Voice feature lets users control multiple apps simultaneously using voice and touch commands interchangeably. Bixby has the ability to control all settings and features of each service without affecting other tasks users might be working on. Its Vision interface can detect what users are looking for and respond accordingly, making it easier to search for images similar to ones selected by the user, shop online, get information about landmarks, decode QR codes and even translate foreign text through the phone’s Camera. Bixby also ensures that users remember important events through its intelligent Reminder feature. All of Bixby’s features can be accessed through its Home screen, which displays a user’s most contextually relevant apps on a single screen.
