Consumers teach Clover a Lesson

Published: 18 September 2017

In its financial statements to end June 2017 released on Friday 12 September, Clover Industries Ltd a major listed dairy producer, reports operating profit down 44.3% to R314.5m with headline earnings down by 65.9% to R121.6m.

Viccy Baker of the independent consumer website Retail Price Watch checked the CE’s presentation of the results to find out why.

“Clover clearly pushed prices beyond the limits of consumers’ pockets – and their patience with what had previously been a known and trusted brand,” she said.

“Clover admitted to making a fundamental sales and marketing error – instead of decreasing prices to combat declining sales volumes, it increased them – by nearly 7% according to their presentation.

“Analysts have defended Clover saying that other milk producers are following suit – but the facts as laid out in the table below show that while the price of milk has indeed climbed over three years, inflation for all brands is between 11 and 13.5%.

“Clover’s prices have consistently been 17-20% higher than another large producer Douglasdale and around 10% higher than Fair Cape, which might legitimately claim a “prolonged drought” as it is based in the Western Cape.

“Such aggressive pricing tactics which tread roughshod over hard pressed consumers – at one stage in 2016 Clover 2l milk was selling at over R30 in some stores around the country – will result in a backlash, which is clearly evident in their results.

“South Africa desperately needs companies and shareholders in the food sector that are interested in sustainability, and not just short term profits.

”As the CEO of Unilever International Paul Polman says: “The power is in the hands of the consumers and they will not give us a sense of legitimacy if they believe the system is unfair or unjust. Some companies that miss the standards of acceptable behaviour to consumers will be selected out. ”

The Famous Massmart Basket

Published: 05 September 2016

During its interim results presentation in August, Massmart displayed a basket of basic items which it said had increased by almost thirteen percent in the six months February – August 2016. This figure suggested 25% y/y inflation on these items, causing concern among analysts and industry watchers.

Retail Price Watch the independent consumer price comparison website looked at average prices of 20 items from the basket pictured by Massmart, in Makro, Checkers, Pick n Pay and Shoprite in February and August.

“Massmart did not detail products so a few sizes and brands had to be estimated for an accurate comparison across all stores”, says Viccy Baker of Retail Price Watch.

“Nevertheless the result is surprising. Makro’s inflation on these 20 goods over the six months was 9.2%* whereas Checkers was 11.2%. Pick n Pay was 6.2% and Shoprite came in with the lowest inflation of only 4.4%.” Perhaps more interesting is the fact that Makro’s prices remained the lowest despite the 9.2% inflation.

“Makro’s prices for the basket were more than 7% lower than Checkers, which had the highest average price in August of R503.61, while Makro’s average price was R469.50”. “Prices at the supermarkets are very similar to each other – for instance the February prices of those 20 items show that Checkers, Pick n Pay and Shoprite were on average less than R6 apart, while in August they were less than R23 apart, “says Baker.

“The question consumers need answered is whether this is a good thing (the wholesale price is about the same to all retailers and all retailers are charging the very lowest they can while still making a profit) or a bad thing (retailers are watching each other’s prices and raising them all to a comparable level).”

*We are not challenging Massmart’s figures as we could not see all their products but reporting the results of our own findings.
