Meerendal Wine Estate set to welcome Jeep Warrior #7

Published: 20 October 2016

13 OCTOBER 2016, WESTERN CAPE – With just two days to go, the Meerendal Wine Estate in Durbanville is geared to welcome athletes from across South Africa competing in the seventh edition of the Jeep Warrior Series, powered by Reebok,  which takes place from 22 to 23 October 2016.

The rugged Jeep Warrior Series is led by the Jeep brand, so participants will have to pit themselves against mud, water, bridges, slides, ladders, climbing nets, monkey ropes and all sorts of fun and challenging terrain and obstacles. Playing host to a number of national and international athletic events, the 300-year-old wine estate boasts an extensive network of mountain biking, walking and running trails – an ideal backdrop for the Jeep Warrior Race #7 in the Jeep Warrior series.

Says Jonathan Hart, Advendurance event organiser and Jeep Warrior Series Course Designer, What makes the Jeep Warrior Series so popular is that it caters to all fitness levels and age groups; all you need is a pair of trainers and a sense of adventure to enter. Meerendal Wine Estate is an excellent venue and we are excited to be back in Cape Town. There is something for everyone and much fun to be had. So bring your crew along for a fantastic day of OCR.

Competition in Black Ops and Black Ops Elite races is fierce and presents the toughest of courses, set over 15 - 20 km with up to 30 obstacles, matching world OCR standards. It is the most challenging category, combining both Rookie and Commando obstacles with the addition of endurance obstacles that involve carrying and dragging heavy objects for set distances.

A less-challenging alternative to the extreme Black Ops course is Warrior Commando, which covers 10 to 14km with approximately 15 obstacles. This course is the perfect team-building experience for couples, friends, and work colleagues. Warrior Commando Elite, the next level up, forbids teams or assistance with other participants, and all obstacles have to be completed in order to qualify.

Warrior Rookie is for beginners and the ideal introduction to OCR, presenting 15 simple and fun obstacles over 5-8 km. But beware if you’re unable to complete an obstacle; a 20-burpee penalty will see you on your way.

Warrior Bratz caters for children ages 4 -12 years old, covering a distance of 500 meters and approximately 8 obstacles aimed at challenging the little athletes. Parents/guardians are welcome to accompany their children through the course, but may not attempt the obstacles themselves.

So grab a pair of takkies, t-shirt and shorts and enter you and your friends into South Africa’s biggest growing and hippest sport, Jeep Warrior OCR. Remember, Jeep Warrior courses are not for the meek and mild so be prepared to get down and dirty.

Van Tonder in #Beastmode ahead of World OCR Champs

Published: 28 September 2016

MPUMALANGA (NELSPRUIT) 28 SEPTEMBER 2016 – This past weekend saw approximately two thousand OCR warriors descend upon Nelspruit to race in front of approximately 3300 spectators at Jeep Warrior round 6 event, powered by Reebok, held at Nelspruit’s new OCR venue, Kwanyoni Lodge, just outside the city centre.

The Nelspruit terrain was perfect in sorting the men from the boys and took no prisoners. Hailed as immensely tough and technical, the Warriors that finished, really earned their Jeep Warrior stripes. “This course was the perfect preparation for the OCR World Champs,”

says Fritz Pienaar, Race Director of The Warrior Company, “we were lucky with the natural elements. We had a world-class terrain, which made it tough and technical but this is similar to what they can expect at the OCR World Championship event in October.”

Jeep Team's OCR Elite athletes, Thomas van Tonder and JJ Deysel, did not disappoint in the toughest event of the day, the Black Ops Elite race, as they crowded the podium taking 1st and 3rd respectively.

This is van Tonder’s 3rd win out of the six Jeep Warrior races so far in the Jeep Warrior series of 8 races. Both van Tonder and Deysel have also been selected for the OCR World Championships taking place in Canada this October.

Nelspriut Black Ops Elite course presented athletes with 33 demanding obstacles over an 18km trail course. The course culminated in a final set of obstacles, which were exceptionally complex, arduous and tough, putting the athlete's agility and strength to the ultimate test. With a starting line of 63 male and female athletes, only 24 made it to the finish line.

After a gruelling battle for over 90 minutes, Jeep Team Elites Black Ops athlete, van Tonder, lived up to his nickname ‘#BEASTMODE” and clinched 1st place in a time of 01h33. Van Tonder exhibited a sterling performance showing his grit and determination when, at one stage, he was lying 5 minutes behind the first place contender. Digging deep, he found his "extra gear" and took first place in what can only be described as a world class effort.

Said van Tonder: "I am very excited to be able to take home a win in the Black Ops Elite this weekend. The course was challenging and tough, with those last obstacles really placing me under immense pressure but I just had to keep up my momentum and I'm happy that it all paid off. I had to remain focused and steadfast to my belief that whatever you do you must give it your all and walk away knowing that you have given it absolutely everything you got."

As race winner, van Tonder gets to drive off in a Jeep Renegade along with R10 000 prize money. He gets to keep the Renegade until the next event in Meerendal Wine Estate on the 22nd and 23rd of October.

Ice Model and OCR athlete, and just back from injury, the impressive Trevor Lagerwey, took a surprise 2nd place in a time of 01h41 with Jeep Team's Jay Jay Deysel seemingly coming out of nowhere with a herculean effort, taking 3rd place in 01h43.

The women's Elite Black Ops race, which is over the same course as the men’s Elite Black Ops, proved to be extremely demanding with only two out of the 7 starters completing the race.

South Africa’s second seeded OCR female athlete, Trish Bahlmann, took 1st place in a time of 02h01, followed by South Africa’s top seeded OCR female athlete, Hanneke Dannhauser, in 2nd place in a time of 02h04.

The OCR World Championship is being held in Toronto, Canada, from 12-16 October. South Africa has a strong 6-athlete team going. They are Jeep Team's Carina Marx, Thomas van Tonder and Jay Jay Deysel. Joining them are Bradley Claasen, Hanneke Dannhauser and Sabrina Daolio. Approximately 116 South African OCR athletes have qualified to compete in the OCR World Champs.

Jeep Team OCR Athletes win the battle at the Battlerush Winter Charge

Published: 05 August 2016

JOHANNESBURG, 05 August 2016 – This weekend saw the Jeep Team Obstacle Course super stars, Thomas Van Tonder and Carina Marx take 1st place in their categories respectively in the Battlerush Winter Charge at the Jozi X Adventure Centre on 31 July 2016. Jeep Team’s Joshua Masudi took 7th place. The Battlerush Winter Charge is considered to be the ultimate obstacle course race, as it is designed by athletes for athletes. It took place over 10km consisting of 36 obstacles built in and around the Jozi X Adventure Centre, the PWC Bike Park and around St. Peter’s College. The obstacles were given names such as the Sternum checker, Irish table, Blades of walls, Traverse walls, Big walls, Peg board, Rope climb, Up container and Down container. With just 25 seconds between 1st and 3rd place in the Elite Men’s category, Thomas Van Tonder’s race was brutish and tight as he fought hard against well-known OCR athletes, Bradley Claase, Louis Smit and Greg Avierinos.

Van Tonder, having upped his training regime over the past couple of months, eventually took top podium in 50m13s with Claase in 2nd in 50m25s, and 3rd going to Louis Smit in 53m38s. Fourth place went to Greg Avierinos in 58m05. Jeep Team’s OCR women’s superstar, Carina Marx, has slowly climbed the ladder of success over the past year whilst being under the Jeep Team OCR banner. From the start of the Battlerush, Marx made her presence known and dug deep to the end against the toughest of OCR elite competitors, even creating minutes between her and Hanneke Dannhauser and Sabrina Daolio. Carina won the battle to 1st place in the Elite Women’s category in a time of 01h07m30s, with Sabrina Daolio 2nd in 01h10m48s, and Hanneke Dannhauser in 3rd place with 01h12m35s. Jeep Team beat The Beast Two Love in Gauteng

Published: 13 June 2016

13 JUNE 2016, JOHANNESBURG – Jeep Team’s Thomas van Tonder and Carina Marx dominated the toughest Beast OCR Challenge yet, with both athletes claiming the respective Men’s and Women’s titles at the event, which took place on Saturday, 11 June, at The Wedge in Muldersdrift, Gauteng.

Van Tonder remains unbeaten, having now won all five of The Beast Challenges since the series launched in 2015, while Marx was the only female competitor who managed to finish the extreme Savage Beast Elite course (30 challenging obstacles over a 15km trail run).

The Men’s race began with a fast sprint to the first obstacle, a rope climb, which was then followed by a water crossing through a freezing pool. Van Tonder and Michael Joubert reached the water first, closely followed by Marius Smith and Bradley Claase.

Van Tonder and Joubert raced alongside each other for most of the race, until reaching the final game-changing obstacle – a 50m-long sequence of ropes, nets, rings, chains and monkey bars, which was very similar to Jeep Warrior’s Breaking Point, only much longer and tougher.

Van Tonder got through the obstacle on first attempt, and then on to the finish to claim the Men’s title in 1h23m. Joubert finished 2nd in 1h26m, followed by Smith in 3rd (1h29m) and Claase 4th in 1h31m.

Only four female athletes competed in the Women’s elite race, which presented the same course as the Men’s event. Marx led from the start, managing to also get through the last 50m obstacle on her first attempt. She was the only elite female competitor to finish, in a time of 3h19m.

Said Marx, “Comparing this race to the very first Beast Challenge, I have to give the team a big applause. The route was marked clearly and the obstacles were of a high standard. Course designer, Jason Friedman, designed a very tough course. He combined a whole lot of tough obstacles, from rope swings, to tyres, to a long net climb, body weaver and finally handle swings. Thankfully I wasn't under any pressure when it came to that last monster of an obstacle and could take my time on every section. After getting through two thirds, the true test came. I was fighting my mind and my tired muscles. I started shaking uncontrollably, but with the help of a few friends and a crowd chanting my name, I had no other option but to finish this race. So I did just that and conquered The Beast.”

THE BEAST CHALLENGE RESULTS:

MEN SAVAGE ELITE BEAST:

  1. Thomas van Tonder - 1:23:39
  2. Michael Joubert - 1:26:51
  3. Marius Smith - 1:29:02
  4. Bradley Claase - 1:31:06
  5. Willem Erasmus - 1:43:05

WOMEN SAVAGE ELITE BEAST:

  1. Carina Marx - 3:19:20

OCR

In the Western Cape, Jeep Team’s Jay Jay Deysel competed in the inaugural Grind Indoor Sprint Obstacle Course Race, which took place in Cape Town on Saturday, 11 June.

The unique event, the first of its kind in South Africa, took place inside the Bellville Velodrome and saw 220 competitors battle it out over 6 elimination rounds, culminating in the finals where 15 of the top athletes went head-to-head.

The course consisted of a 1km sprint with 15 intense obstacles, and attracted professional athletes from a range of sports disciplines, including OCR, gymnastics, martial arts, rugby and trail running.

Deysel managed an impressive 2nd place podium finish. Trevor Lagerwey won the Men’s event.

Said Deysel, “I managed to get good and consistent times in the elimination rounds and I'm very happy to say that I finished the day in 2nd place behind Trevor Lagerwey who was very strong and consistent throughout the day. A big well done to The Grind team for the awesome event they put together. I had so much fun and definitely think this is something that’s going to make a name in the OCR industry.”

Paddling

On Saturday, Jeep Team’s canoe king, Hank McGregor, continued his winning streak, this time winning the K1 title at the South African Canoe Marathon Championships, which took place in treacherous windy conditions in Cape Town.

In a reversal of last year’s race, McGregor narrowly edged out 2015 K1 winner, Andy Birkett, in a thrilling sprint finish to claim the title a split second ahead of Birkett. Brandon van der Walt finished 3rd.

The result means McGregor and Birkett have now qualified for the SA team heading to the Canoe World Championships in Germany later this year, where McGregor will be aiming to claim his seventh world title.

On Sunday, McGregor partnered with Siseko Ntondini to compete in the K2 SA Championships, with the duo finishing 3rd. Birkett / Louis Hattingh won the K2 event, with Van der Walt / Stu McLaren in 3rd.

Said McGregor, “I am stoked with this win and really looking forward to the World Champs. There were five boats together coming into the last turn and the tough conditions asked a lot of questions. Thanks to everyone for all your support on the bank and well done to all the competitors on a solid race.”

MTB

Jeep Team’s MTB athlete, Thinus Redelinghuys, partnered with Timothy Hammond to take on the three-day, 237km Gem Diamonds Kalahari Challenge MTB Stage Race, which took place in Botswana from 10 – 12 June 2016.

Limited to a field of just 300 riders, the Kalahari Challenge is a full-service stage race set in the bushveld of southern Botswana. The race offered a variety of single track through the bushveld, gnarly technical uphills through the Kalahari Mountains and hardpack track.

Redelinghuys and Hammond led the race from start to finish, winning all three stages, and culminating in a total time of 9h51m15.

Back in South Africa, Jeep Team’s Pierre Smith competed in Round 4 of Ashburton Investments’ National MTB Series, which took place at Van Gaalen, North West province, on 11 June.

Smith finished the 113km ultra marathon in 13th overall in 5h53. Max Knox won the Men’s race in 4h45, followed by Nico Bell in 2nd (4h48) and HB Kruger 3rd (4h50).

Said Smith, “Yesterday was a proper challenge at Van Gaalen racing the 4th leg of Ashburton Investments’ National MTB Series. The 113km race with almost 2000m of climbing over very tough terrain, was a good test for the body, both physically and mentally. It was brutal, but I’m happy with my top 15 finish. Thanks Jeep Team for the immense support.”

STELLENBOSCH, 24 MAY 2016 – Michael Lord (Jeep Team) successfully defended his duathlon title to claim his second consecutive Standard Bank Banhoek Duo victory on Saturday, 21 May 2016 in the Western Cape. Lord won the long Duo Leopard Challenge, a 20km MTB and 10km Trail Run through the picturesque Banhoek Conservancy, just outside of Stellenbosch, in 1h23m34, just ahead of Azukile Simayile in 2nd (1h23m50), with Matthew Daneel 3rd in 1h26m58.

Said Lord, “This is one of my favourite races, set in one of the most beautiful parts of South Africa – the Banhoek Valley. The course is spectacular and challenging, winding through vineyards and forests, with steep climbs and amazing views of Banhoek Mountain. I just love it! It’s great to win again after my victory in 2015.” Bridget Fouche won the women’s event in 1h56m32, followed by Carla Beyers in 2nd (2h01m15) and Deleen-Marie Steyn 3rd (2h08m58). The local community established the Banhoek Conservancy in 2013 to protect the stunning environment, which now forms part of the Hottentots-Hollands Nature Reserve. The conservancy generates an income by providing well-designed, permanently marked, off-road tracks for trail running and MTB. All profits generated from events, including the annual Standard Bank Banhoek Duo, are used to maintain the tracks and facilities, preserve the flora and fauna, and remove alien vegetation from the area.

Racing in IMPI Elite, which consisted of 26 to 28 obstacles over a muddy 20km trail run, Van Tonder placed 2nd Male in 1h45, Marx placed 3rd Female in 2h20, and Masudi finished 6th Male in 1h58. Jeep Warrior's ‘Breaking Point’ takes no prisoners at Hobby Park

Published: 05 May 2016

Joubert and Dannhauser take Black Ops Elite Men’s and Women’s titles

JOHANNESBURG, 05 MAY 2016 – Over 6 500 Jeep Warrior participants faced extreme challenges at Race#3 of the 2016 Jeep Warrior Series, which took place on the 23rd and 24th April 2016 at Hobby Park in Krugersdorp.

Athletes who raced in Black Ops Elite (30 obstacles over 16km distance) on Sunday, were in agreement that the course was exceptionally tough, mentally and physically, as only 26 elites of 70 starters finished the race.

The toughest obstacle, ‘Breaking Point’, lived up to its name, and proved to be the game changer in the Elite Men’s race.

Breaking Point demands an extreme test of upper body strength that requires athletes to get through a 15m sequence of ropes, rings, chains and monkey bars without falling. Right at the end of Breaking Point, athletes need to move themselves over a few metres using only their fingertips, in a stretch known as the Cliff Hanger. It’s at this point that many fall.

New obstacles in the elite events included Extreme Monkey (a series of pivoting ladders) and a heavy barrel-carrying obstacle.

In the men’s Black Ops Elite, Race#1 winner Thomas van Tonder (Jeep Team) and Race#2 winner Claude Eksteen (Adventure Obstacle Training) started off convincingly, managing to get in front at the first bottleneck onto the first single track.

Two kilometres into the race, well-known runner, Eksteen, surged ahead through the flat running section, leaving Van Tonder in second, with Bradley Claase (Battlerush) and Michael Joubert (Nevarest Team) chasing a few seconds behind.

These Black Ops Elite leaders stayed in this order for three quarters of the race until Breaking Point.

Eksteen reached Breaking Point first, but was unable to get through on his first attempt. Van Tonder was next to attempt the obstacle, but he too fell prey to this extreme test of upper body strength, falling from the final cliff hanger section.

This gave Michael Joubert the opportunity he needed to surge ahead, getting through Breaking Point on first attempt and through to the finish line to claim the men’s title in 1h37m30, with Claase 2nd in 1h40m22 and Greg Avierinos (Nevarest Team) 3rd in 1h42m58. Jeep Team’s Jay Jay Deysel placed 4th in 1h45m59, with Van Tonder finishing 5th in 2h00m10.

Said Joubert, “It was a great race. I started a bit slow, trying to keep my pace and my energy. Bradley [Claase] and I raced alongside each other for most of the race and that was great. Breaking Point was really tough this time around after so much up and downhill running on the course. I kept an easy pace from the start, and this luckily gave me the edge, giving me enough energy to get through Breaking Point first time round.”

The Black Ops Elite women compete on exactly the same course as the men elite. In fact, throughout all the Jeep Warrior events men and women compete on all the same courses. It stands to reason why the Jeep vehicle brand loves the Warrior brand so much – it’s all about equality and strength.

Race#2 winner, Hanneke Dannhauser (USN), dominated the women’s elite race, securing the lead at the start and going on to conquer Breaking Point on her first attempt. No small feat. She claimed the women’s crown in 2h00m12, followed by Jeep Team’s Carina Marx in 2nd (2h08m35) and Dominique D'Oliveira 3rd in 2h12m02.

Testament to the strength of these warrior women – the top 3 women elites were placed in the Top 10 overall male and female. Dannhauser placed 6th overall, Marx placed 9th and D'Oliveira placed 10th.

Said Dannhauser, “It was a close race. Carina and Dominique were chasing me the whole time. I kept looking over my shoulder and they were right behind me. Awesome that all three of us got through Breaking Point on first attempt and made the top 10 overall! The course was a great challenge, but I definitely didn’t enjoy all the uphills. I loved the Hobby Park venue because of the beautiful setting with lots of trees. It was also really spectator-friendly, which made for a great festive atmosphere.”

Said Van Tonder, “It was a superb day for racing - clear skies and ‎game faces all round. The route had a lot of steep hills with spots of very technical running. At the start the course went straight into single track. Luckily I was one of the first to get through to the front of the pack. Only about 2kms into the race did the course flatten out. As expected, it was here that Claude [Eksteen] cranked up the pace, securing the lead.

I think my biggest mistake of the day was not using my legs enough on the rope climb obstacle just before Breaking Point. The ropes took the extra bit of grip-strength that I needed for Breaking Point. I made it all the way to the cliff hanger part at the end, and then my old nemesis got some pay-back and I fell. The results tell the story of how that ended.”

The next Jeep Warrior Race is taking place from 16 – 17 July 2016 in KwaZulu-Natal at the Sugar Rush Estate in Ballito. To find out more and to enter online, go to http://www.warrior.co.za/events/2016-jeep-warrior4/.

Jeep Warrior Krugersdorp coming up

Published: 15 April 2016

KZN, MPUMALANGA AND WESTERN CAPE RACES STILL TO COME

JOHANNESBURG, 13 APRIL 2016 – It’s time to unleash the inner warrior. If you can imagine speeding down giant water slides, swinging from ropes and bars, belly-crawling through mud, running through nature, climbing up and over walls and getting covered head to toe in mud, then hurry and book your spot at the Jeep Warrior Obstacle Course Race, 23-24 April 2016, at Hobby Park, Krugersdorp, Gauteng.

Says Jonathan Hart, Jeep Warrior Series Course Designer, “Obstacle course racing is really rewarding for all sorts of people with varying fitness levels because each race combines a little of everything. Even for first timers, there’ll be obstacles they’re good at, which make them feel great, and there’ll be some that they’re not so good at because they’ve never done anything like that before, which spurs them on to come back for more, trying harder the next time.

Says Shane Howarth, Head of Sponsorship at Jeep South Africa, “What truly makes obstacle course racing unique compared to all other sports is the comradery generated at every event. This is a festive sport celebrating life. Every event is full of opportunities to lend a hand or get a boost up yourself. Once you’re talked someone into jumping off a 6m high tower into water, the effect can be eye opening – you’ll see that most people are there for the fun and camaraderie. It’s at that point you realise you’ve found your fitness tribe.”

Every Jeep Warrior Race takes place in a stunning outdoor arena and includes three distances that increase in difficulty and intensity. All courses feature a combination or trail running, climbing, jumping, swinging, crawling, carrying heavy stuff and wading through mud, but the exact obstacles change at every event, adding to the sense of surprise and unexpected adventure that keeps people coming back for more and more.

Says Hart, “For the next Jeep Warrior race in Krugersdorp at the end of April, we’ve reworked the Hobby Park venue to make it more spectator friendly and to basically give everyone a fun day out in the sun. Hobby Park is great because it’s not too flat and it’s not ridiculously hilly. It’s basically all sorts of seasons in one – with a few climbs, some rocks and some mud. Warriors definitely won’t be bored!”

For the super fit competing in the toughest event in the Jeep Warrior Series - Black Ops Elite (15km with 30 obstacles) - the notorious Breaking Point obstacle is making a fierce comeback at Hobby Park. A brand-new obstacle called Extreme Monkey will also be unveiled. Here, elites will face an extreme upper body strength and grip test as they navigate the obstacle’s pivoting ladders.

Says Jeep Warrior Black Ops Elite athlete, Thomas van Tonder (Jeep Team), “I love Jeep Warrior Races because at every event there are always surprises. My nemesis obstacle is Cliff Hanger because it’s beaten me once or twice before so I’m always weary. My favourite obstacles are the ones involving slides and water jumps - these bring back the fun and remind me why I love OCR. Breaking Point is a very satisfying obstacle, but it can be heart-breaking as well.”

Warrior Rookie is the ideal course for OCR beginners. The 6.2km course at Hobby Park will feature 15 simple and fun obstacles. This includes Mud Monster (a series of mud pools and clay banks that competitors wade through and then climb up and slide down), Slippery Dip (a giant water slide) and the fear-of-heights-conquering Tower Jump (6m jump into a pool). If you can’t complete an obstacle – just do some burpees.

Thomas van Tonder’s number one tip for Warrior first timers, “Do your first race as a team and wear clothes and shoes that you don’t feel sorry for – you’re going to get really dirty.”

Ready to up your game? Try Warrior Commando – a more challenging 10km course with 22 obstacles. Commando is labelled as the ultimate team-building experience for couples, friends and work colleagues. This course features more upper body challenges, the most difficult being rope hanging.

Warrior Black Ops is the toughest of the challenges, presenting a gruelling 15km course with 30 extreme obstacles. This is a test pf physical, mental and emotional endurance. Obstacles have been designed to break athletes, with only the super fit crossing the finish line.

EDITOR’S NOTES

A BRIEF HISTORY OF OCR

Today’s obstacle course racing has evolved from military-style bootcamp training courses that were used to prepare recruits for combat. One of the world’s oldest competitive OCR events is the notorious Tough Guy Challenge, which takes place every year in Staffordshire, England. Started in 1987, the race claims to be “the world's most demanding one-day survival ordeal”.

Held in in the middle of the British winter, Tough Guy’s 15km course is designed to resemble a World War One battleground, with 25 obstacles featuring steep hill climbs and cliffs, freezing water pools and muddy ditches, fire pits, rope bridges, nets and barbed wire fences.

In 2010, OCR truly became an accessible sport to everyone, not just the super fit. This was in part due to the launch of the Spartan and Tough Mudder obstacle races in the USA that catered to a range of fitness abilities. Both races soon gained mass support and sponsorship, with over a million Americans registering for and participating in OCR in 2011.

In 2014, the first OCR World Championships took place in Ohio USA. It was won by the UK's Jonathan Albon, who went on to successfully defend his crown in 2015.
