Lindfield Victorian House Museum opens Museum Shop

Published: 24 June 2021

The Lindfield Victorian House Museum, the iconic niche-museum in Auckland Park, Johannesburg, proudly announced that it has opened the Lindfield Emporium at the museum. The Lindfield Emporium is a Victorian-style department store selling all sorts of very interesting collectables. The shop also has a Victorian photographic studio complete with an authentic hand-painted photo-backdrop. The backdrop has been expertly painted by Pierre Roestorf, an associate of the museum.

“It has always been a dream of mine to add a shop to the museum allowing visitors to purchase something special that would remind them of the museum and the Victorians. The shop immerses the visitor in the Victorian era, resulting in a deeply authentic and rewarding experience.” said Katharine Love, owner and curator of the museum.

The shop is open to anybody that completes a booked tour. It is also open by appointment, for those who want to experience the shop without doing a museum tour first. The Lindfield Emporium has a fancy goods department, a pharmacy, groceries and confectionery, drapery and haberdashery, books, toys, an office and even a post office counter. Naturally, some items are for display only.

Leon Erasmus, an associate of the museum, added that the private access to the shop will certainly enhance anyone’s visit to the museum as the shop is a very faithful recreation of a typical Victorian store.

LINDFIELD VICTORIAN HOUSE MUSEUM AWARDED CERTIFICATE OF EXCELLENCE HALL OF FAME

Published: 29 May 2019

Certificate of Excellence earned every year for the past five years Johannesburg, South Africa – 29 May 2019 – The Lindfield Victorian House Museum, a niche-museum in Auckland Park, Johannesburg, today announced that it has received the TripAdvisor® Certificate of Excellence award for 2019.

In so doing, the museum also qualified for the Certificate of Excellence Hall of Fame. The Hall of Fame entry is only awarded to those who received the Certificate of Excellence every year for five years. The award celebrates excellence in hospitality and is given to establishments that consistently achieve great traveller reviews on TripAdvisor.

To qualify, a business must maintain an overall TripAdvisor bubble rating of at least four out of five and have a minimum number of reviews. “Winning the TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence for 2019 is a tremendous honour for the museum.

The museum would of course, not have been able to achieve this without our visitors who took the time to review us on TripAdvisor,” said Katharine Love, owner and curator of the museum.

“Earning the Hall of Fame accolade is doubly satisfying. We strive to give visitors a very unique and private look at a Victorian household in the suburbs. Our guided social-history tours allow our visitors to travel back in time and come face-to-face with an altogether more elegant era. These TripAdvisor awards confirms that our visitors love the experience.”

Leon Erasmus, an associate of the museum, added that these awards are especially meaningful as the museum receives no government funding, support or rebates whatsoever, despite being recognized as a top performing speciality museum on the world’s largest travel site and despite being commended by the National Trust in the UK as well as the Victorian Society in London.

"TripAdvisor is pleased to honor exceptional businesses that have received consistent praise and recognition by travelers on the site,” said Marc Charron President, TripAdvisor for Business. “By putting a spotlight on businesses that are focused on delivering great service to customers, TripAdvisor not only helps drive increasing hospitality standards around the world, it also gives businesses both large and small the ability to shine and stand out from the competition.” Lindfield Victorian House Museum

Victorian House Museum Awarded Jo'burg Heritage Plaque

Published: 27 October 2016

The Lindfield Victorian House museum (a Provincial Heritage Site) recently received its Joburg Heritage Plaque from the Johannesburg Heritage Foundation. The museum shares this honour with several other sites such as the Gandhi Family House, Madiba's first home in Johannesburg, the Union Castle Buildings, and so on.

Called Grey Roofs, the original small cottage was designed by Herbert Baker. Baker ruled the architectural scene in South Africa between 1892 and 1912.  The house was originally built (circa 1910) for Dr. St John Stanwell and his wife Alice.  In 1924, A.J. Marshall (Sir Herbert Baker's Clerk of Works), made changes to the house and in 1933, Nellie Edwards  (Johannesburg's first female architect and Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts), added additional rooms.

Today Lindfield Victorian House Museum tells a tale of Johannesburg during an era that shaped the urban city of today. It shows the Victorian day-to-day life, the culture, intellectual achievements and social norms of the day.  The spirit of this elegant era still breathes in the Lindfield Victorian House Museum and visitors not only learn its cultural history, but also experience the ambience of a bygone world.

Former Mayor of Johannesburg, Parks Tau,  wrote in 2013 "For years now Johannesburg has been acknowledging special buildings and sites, historic struggles, remarkable personalities and other pieces of history by means of blue heritage plaques."  The Lindfield Victorian House Museum displays its  plaque with pride and in reverence to the Victorians.
