Published: 21 October 2016

COLLINGWOOD, ONTARIO, CANADA 19 OCTOBER 2016 – The Obstacle Course World Championships took place this past week in the Blue Mountain Resort in Canada, from 14th to the 16th October 2016, attracting over 4,000 athletes from 43 countries. Three Jeep Team athletes qualified and were selected for Team South Africa. The Obstacle Course World Championships is a single event created to unify, promote and increase participation in the sport of OCR, while celebrating its amazing athletes and community.

It was a tough but very rewarding weekend for Jeep Team athletes, Thomas Van Tonder, Jay Jay Deysel and Carina Marx, who participated on a world platform against the best in the world. Jeep Team’s Carina Marx and Thomas van Tonder raced in the OCR World Champs Pro Race with 914 male and female athletes from forty-three countries, all converging on to a 15-km long course tackling over forty obstacles with names like Dragon’s Back, Skull Valley, Mini Platinum Rig, Floating Boards, F5 Skyline, Urban Sky, Warped Wall, Wreck Bag Carry, and more. This Pro field race had no age groups, with mixed genders racing together - all the world’s best obstacle course racers only competing for the title of World Champion, and some of the biggest cash prizes in the sport.

Carina Marx performed at world-class level leaving no prisoners, finishing in an outstanding 12th female overall out of 43 women challengers, in a phenomenal time of 2:18:27. The average time taken to complete the Pro Race across male and female racers was 2:53:24. South Africa’s top OCR Champion, Thomas Van Tonder, took part in 2 races in the OCR World Champs. His first race, the World Champs Pro race, was as tough as they come against the toughest OCR athletes in the world. Van Tonder gave it everything finishing in a phenomenal 16th place overall out of 169 male participants, in a time of 1:37:40, just 8 minutes behind the overall winner. Jon Albon (UK) took the win in the Pro men’s event in a time of 1:24:36, his 3rd OCR World Championship win, and for the women, Canadian’s Lindsay Webster’s took the win, her second OCR World Championship win, in a time of 1:45:45. Both completing the same course, they dominated their races, taking the lead early on and never looking back.

Jay Jay Deysel took part in the OCR World Championships 3 km race and finished 35th out of 136 participants, in 20:36 in the 18-24 age category. Deysel also completed the 15-km Long course finishing in 43rd place in a time of 1:54:02. Said Deysel: “This was the most fun I had in a long time. I once again realized how blessed we are to do the things we love. Life is short. Be the best you can be and spread the love.”   Marx and Van Tonder also participated in the OCR World Championship Make-a-Wish Open Challenge, which took place on the 16th of October. A 15-km standard-distance challenge to test OCR strength and skills, this course was created for the best in the world to raise funds for the Make-a-Wish® Foundation. No qualification was required for this special charity event allowing all athletes an opportunity to give something back. There were 429 finishers of which 268 were men and 161 were women.

Unstoppable McGregor geared to end 2016 with a bang in France and Hong Kong

Published: 18 October 2016

PIETERMARITZBURG, 18 OCTOBER 2016 – Jeep Team’s eight-time World Canoe Marathon Champion, Hank McGregor, this past weekend won the John Woods Three Sisters Single Surfski Challenge and is now off to France to compete in the 7th edition of the Breizh Ocean Race, a World Surfski Series Race, which will be hosted in Morbihan France. McGregor recently clinched his seventh Hansa Fish River Canoe Marathon win, and it isn’t over yet for the unstoppable McGregor as he is ready to end 2016 with a bang by competing in three more race titles, two them being in France and Hong Kong.

This has been a formidable year in which McGregor has proven to be unbeatable after winning numerous international and national titles across different paddling disciplines including surfski, flat water and river canoe marathon, and canoe sprints, but it isn’t over yet.

Says McGregorI am amped and ready to take on the last few challenges for the year. It has been a good year and I am stoked for the wins and the chance to compete against the best South African and International paddlers. The next few races are going to be challenging and I hope to finish off this year on a high note.” McGregor is now off to France to compete in the 7th edition of the Breizh Ocean Race, a World Surfski Series Race, which will be hosted in Morbihan France from the 21st to 23rd October. Following a second place finish in 2014, behind fellow South African Jasper Mocké, McGregor will be vying for a win on this downwind surfski course.

McGregor will then join South African paddlers for the annual Pete Marlin Surfski Champs happening at Nahoon Beach in East London on the 5th and 6th November 2016. The Wild Coast boasts some of the best downwind conditions in South Africa. This Surfski Champs is part of the World Surfski Series and is a 23km downwind race between the Orient and Yellow Sands beaches finishing at Nahoon Beach. Other South African paddlers in this race will include Barry Lewin and Dawie Mocké. The final stopover for McGregor will be the Hong Kong Dragon Run happening in Kowloon, Hong Kong from 12-13 November. This International Surfski Championships event boasts a 24km course starting at Clearwater Bay and finishing at Stanley Main Beach. Though the weather conditions in Hong Kong in November provide excellent downward paddling conditions, the course will present paddlers with highly technical conditions for the majority of the race, testing the best of the best in the world.   Ends

Upcoming Dolman wins African Continental BMX Championship

Published: 12 October 2016

KWAZULU-NATAL, SOUTH AFRICA, 11 OCTOBER 2016 - The National BMX Championship and African Continental  BMX Championship, which took place at Giba Gorge Park in KZN, on Saturday and Sunday, the 1st and 2nd October 2016, was a weekend filled with BMX action. Young Jeep Team BMX racer, Alex Dolman (15), participated in both Championships in the Boys under 16 race. In the South African National BMX Championship, Dolman finished 2nd, losing only to the strong Jason O’Shea. The following day, racing in the African Continental BMX Championship, Dolman was having none of it, winning the Under 16’s race, this time ahead of Jason O’Shea.

Cycling South Africa President, William Newman, said: “When I arrived and saw all of the young girls and boys lining up to do their moto’s, I thought, ‘wow, cycling is in a very good space.’ We have a lot of talent. It shows here because we have a lot of young girls and boys participating in the sport, and BMX is the best way to teach them about, and get them involved in cycling. The finals were also so exciting.” The African Continental BMX Championships had a great turnout of riders from Lesotho, Zimbabwe, Namibia and South Africa.

Newman added “Our challenge now is to ensure that we have BMX in all nine provinces, and active. We would also like to see more African nations taking part in the Continental Championships, but to have these four nations is a great stepping stone.” Source: cyclingsa.co.za Other Jeep Team results PADDLING Hank McGregor News Eight-time World Champion and Jeep Team paddler, Hank McGregor, just back from racing Ireland’s 57th International Liffey Descent with doubles partner, Lee Furby, after finishing 5th overall against a large set of international competitors.

McGregor will be racing the much anticipated Hansa Fish River Canoe Marathon this coming weekend, 7 & 8 October, on the start line full of confidence after his double gold medal wins at the recent Canoe Marathon World Championships in Germany.

McGregor, six-time winner of the Hansa Fish River Canoe Marathon, said, “Going to Worlds and retaining my title was obviously a big focus for the last while but now that that job is done, it’s good to come home and still be able to look forward to the Fish. With a guaranteed water release and great vibe, Fish is one of the biggest and possibly the best paddling races in South Africa, and I wouldn’t miss it for the world!”

Jeep Team’s Van Tonder and Marx in Warrior Mode ahead Of OCR World Champs

Published: 15 September 2016

13 SEPTEMBER 2016, JOHANNESBURG – It is less than a month until the world’s top OCR athletes fight it out at the third OCR World Championships from 14-16 October 2016 at the Blue Mountain Resort, Toronto in Ontario, Canada.

Jeep Team athletes, Thomas van Tonder and Carina Marx, have both qualified and have been in full Warrior mode ahead of the World Championship.

Both Van Tonder and Marx were on fire at the recent Battlerush OCR fundraiser, a gruelling OCR Training event designed to push athletes through tough individual obstacles that may be seen at the World Champs; and both won the Savage Beast race at The Beast OCR event this past weekend.

To have qualified for OCR World Champs, South Africans need to have achieved a Jeep Warrior Top 20 finish in an Elite category in their gender, or an Impi Challenge Top 20 finish in the Elite division in their gender.

Van Tonder, over in the past 12 months, has achieved three 1st places, six 2nd places, and one 5th place. Marx, over the same period, has achieved four 2nd places, four 3rd places and two 5th places. Both athletes are well qualified for the Championships but won’t know how they truly compare against the rest of the world until they are neck deep in mud in Ontario.

The OCR athletes selected for Team OCR South Africa to go to World Champs is Thomas van Tonder, Bradley Claase, Michael Joubert and Claude Eksteen (not going) for Men; and Hanneke Dannhauser, Carina Marx and Trish Bahlmann (not going) for Women.

Joining van Tonder and Marx in Canada, is fellow Jeep OCR athlete, JJ Deysel, who was not selected for the SA OCR Team, but will compete in other races over the Championship weekend.

According to the event organisers, the OCR World Championships will put the world’s top athletes through the ultimate physical and mental challenge across a series of obstacles over a distance of approximately 13km and will marry natural elements with some of the most challenging obstacles in OCR history.

While the course will share some of the same terrain and obstacles our team will be used to, a significant portion of the course and obstacles will be new to athletes and unveiled only on race weekend.

It is the first truly-independent global Championship for the burgeoning sport of Obstacle Course Racing. It is a singular event created to unify, promote, and increase participation in the sport of OCR, while celebrating its strong and highly-versatile athletes.

Said Marx, “My OCR path started with my first Rookie (Jeep Warrior Race) two and a half years ago. It was love at first “mud”. I admired the Black Ops Elite ladies for their skills and toughness, even though they looked fairly soft on the outside. It was a dream and a goal of mine to get to that level. Two years later, I joined Jeep Team and selected for Team OCR South Africa, qualifying to take part at the OCR World Champs.”

Said van Tonder: “The Beast 6 was one of the best courses of The Beast Series so far. In this event, I got to run the 5km route with #StandWithStan amputee after our race, an incredibly humbling experience and a reminder of how blessed we are to be able to do what we are doing. This takes my BEAST winning streak to all 6 events. I’m so amped for the World Champs next month.”

Paddling – McGregor the Machine (sourced from Gameplan Media)

South African Jeep Team paddling icon, Hank McGregor, wants another K1 and potentially a K2 title at the ICF Canoe Marathon Masters World Championships taking place in Brandenberg, Germany from 16 to 18 September.

McGregor believes the German facility may well suit him better than the course in Gyor, Hungary where he won gold in the K1 event and silver in the K2 with doubles partner, Jasper Mocké.

“After all the years of racing international marathon championships, the German course is still one that I haven’t raced on,” the Euro Steel/Kayak Centre ace mentioned. “From what I can see, the course is far more open than last year’s.

“Also it isn’t on a river, which will suit me better, and if the wind picks up then the race might become a little like a surfski race, which again should benefit me.

“At about 210 metres, the portage is about three times as long as last year’s, so if you are not a strong runner then you might battle.”

“My partner, Jasper Mocké, is also in good form at the moment and came off a good win at the Breede Canoe Marathon recently, so if we can just make sure we remain fit and healthy then I think we should be in with a good shout in the K2 race as well.

“Having narrowly missed out on gold in the K2 last year in the end sprint, we have got more than enough motivation to rectify that this year and we are going out there to do our best and give it a proper shot,” added McGregor.

The world’s best marathon paddlers will gather to attempt to dethrone McGregor – who has claimed the global K1 crown a remarkable four times in the past five years – and with the majority of the challenge likely to come from Europe, McGregor understands the threat that the rest of the field poses to his crown.

“I can’t really single out any specific challenger but the Portuguese, Spanish and Hungarians always provide a really stern test.

“Andy Birkett will also be there and he has been going really well with his World Cup win recently, so the field is going to be incredibly strong and I will need to make sure I am in good shape and healthy so I can be in with a chance,” explained a confident McGregor. Other paddling news:

Jeep Team Paddle Veteran and former South African Team Captain, Barry Lewin, recently led a group of experienced paddlers on an exploratory trip along the KwaZulu-Natal coastline from Cape Vidal to St Lucia.

Lewin is working closely with iSimangaliso Wetland Park to create an annual paddling event that will raise funds and awareness for the Wetland Conservation area from Cape Vidal to St Lucia.

Said Lewin, “We had such a great weekend away in St Lucia. I have been working with the Park to set up a race there in the future and am blown away by what we have right on our doorstep, Africa is amazing. We paddled from Cape Vidal to St Lucia on a nice NE with some great people.”

MTB

Jeep Team’s MTB athlete, Thinus Redelinghuys placed 8th in the ultra-marathon at Ashburton National MTB Series #6, which took place at Dulstroom at Dunkeld Country Estate on 3rd September.

The National MTB Series consists of seven events across 6 provinces over an eight month period.

The final event in the series takes place Rooiberg on 15th October 2016 at the Rooberg Golf Club.

Global Experience wins the Dolphin Coast Race for McGregor/Furby Team

Published: 24 August 2016

KWAZULU-NATAL, DURBAN, 22 AUGUST 2016 – In an epic weekend of Surfski prowess, Jeep Team Surfski World Champion, Hank McGregor, paired with Lee Furby, claimed a strategic victory in the Gara Dolphin Coast Challenge, a two-day stage race off the Dolphin Coast that saw paddlers fighting for the title in a gruelling challenge that started from Suncoast and ended at Zinkwazi, with a nail-biting finish and narrow victory to the seasoned pair.

Day one was a 42km paddle from Suncoast Pirates Surf Lifesaving Club to Salt Rock. In a dramatic end to the day, race leaders at the time, McGregor and Furby, took an unfortunate swim in the sprint finish, giving team, Matt Bouwman and Wade Krieger, the edge to claim the opening day honours, and a 40-second head start into day two.   Day two of this downwind epic was 32km from Salt Rock to Zinkwazi. McGregor and Furby had much to do to catch up the 40-second deficit from day one. But like only McGregor can, using different lines and years of global paddling experience, he and Furby did the business to claim overall race honours in one of the most exciting events on the Surfski calendar.

Said McGregor at the end of Day 2, "The conditions were tough today with an offshore wind blowing and I think that the fitter pairs were able to benefit from it. We decided not to go too deep today and rather remain in the shallower water whilst Matt and Wade went deep, which made quite a big difference at the end of the race.”

Jeep Team take podium at Jeep Warrior Hazeldean

Published: 24 August 2016

PRETORIA EAST, HAZELDEAN VALLEY, 23nd August 2016 – This past weekend, the 20th and 21st of August, saw Round 5 of the Jeep Warrior Series kick off on a cold fresh morning, fast becoming a hot and gruelling race for the approximately 4 000 athletes competing at Hazeldean Valley’s Cowhouse Market venue in Pretoria East. Jeep Team’s fit-and-fast Black Ops Elite athletes, Thomas van Tonder, Carina Marx, JJ Deysel and Joshua Masundi, knew it was going to be brutal when eyeing up the usual suspects on the start line. All of South Africa’s top OCR athletes were present, looking buff and tough. It was going to be war to the end.

The Black Ops Elite course presented 30 obstacles over a 20km trail, each challenging either your mental or physical limits in the longest Warrior Black Ops Elite race to date. The terrain was fairly flat giving hardened runners the edge between obstacles. After fighting it out for over 90 minutes, Jeep Team OCR star and Jeep Warrior series leader, Thomas van Tonder, succumbed to second place in a time of 01h40, a few minutes behind eventual race winner, 39-year-old Claude Eksteen (Ex-World Triathlete), who returned to the series and claimed top spot in 01h37. Louis Smit came 3rd in 01h43. Jeep Team’s JJ Deysel and Joshua Masudi took seventh and eleventh places respectively.

The Jeep Warrior brand radiates quality and equality as you are judged only on your mettle to compete and finish. All genders race together over the same course, giving a fresh take on women helping men, and vice versa, over and out of mud pits and the like. Jeep Team’s top female OCR athlete, Corina Marx, put in an impressive fight against the top women OCR athletes in the country. Marx eventually finished 3rd in 02h33, climbing two positions from Jeep Warrior Race 4 in Ballito, where she placed fifth thanks to a hamstring injury. The highly efficient Hanneke Dannhauser took top spot in 02h19 with super-strong Trish Bahlmann in second in a time of 02h27.

Jeep Warrior’s Carina Marx, said “It was truly a runner's race. Our stamina and endurance were really pushed to the limits. This is an incredible series and I’m proud to compete alongside top athletes like Hanneke (Dannhauser) and Trish (Bahlmann). Dannhauser was an absolute machine today. No one was going to catch her.” Marx is currently lying 4th in the overall series standings behind Bahlmann, Dannhauser and D’Oliveira. Coming into the Jeep Team fold around 6 months ago with lots of potential but short on experience and relevant fitness levels, Marx has shown incredible improvements, and will go much further once she accepts the warrior within, and lets it out, taking no prisoners.

The Jeep Team will be competing in the next Jeep Warrior Race 6, which takes place from 24 - 25 September 2016 at Kwanyoni Lodge in Nelspruit.

Jeep Team OCR Athletes win the battle at the Battlerush Winter Charge

Published: 05 August 2016

JOHANNESBURG, 05 August 2016 – This weekend saw the Jeep Team Obstacle Course super stars, Thomas Van Tonder and Carina Marx take 1st place in their categories respectively in the Battlerush Winter Charge at the Jozi X Adventure Centre on 31 July 2016. Jeep Team’s Joshua Masudi took 7th place. The Battlerush Winter Charge is considered to be the ultimate obstacle course race, as it is designed by athletes for athletes. It took place over 10km consisting of 36 obstacles built in and around the Jozi X Adventure Centre, the PWC Bike Park and around St. Peter’s College. The obstacles were given names such as the Sternum checker, Irish table, Blades of walls, Traverse walls, Big walls, Peg board, Rope climb, Up container and Down container. With just 25 seconds between 1st and 3rd place in the Elite Men’s category, Thomas Van Tonder’s race was brutish and tight as he fought hard against well-known OCR athletes, Bradley Claase, Louis Smit and Greg Avierinos.

Van Tonder, having upped his training regime over the past couple of months, eventually took top podium in 50m13s with Claase in 2nd in 50m25s, and 3rd going to Louis Smit in 53m38s. Fourth place went to Greg Avierinos in 58m05. Jeep Team’s OCR women’s superstar, Carina Marx, has slowly climbed the ladder of success over the past year whilst being under the Jeep Team OCR banner. Her progress has been remarkable – a true test of a champion is to take defeat in hand and work it over until it is victorious. From the start of the Battlerush, Marx made her presence known and dug deep to the end against the toughest of OCR elite competitors, even creating minutes between her and Hanneke Dannhauser and Sabrina Daolio. Carina won the battle to 1st place in the Elite Women’s category in a time of 01h07m30s, with Sabrina Daolio 2nd in 01h10m48s, and Hanneke Dannhauser in 3rd place with 01h12m35s. Jeep Team Tri-Athletes, Lord and Jonsson, scoop Gold this weekend

Published: 26 July 2016

KWAZULU-NATAL, 26 JULY 2016 - The weekend saw Jeep Team Multisport athletes, Michael Lord, winning gold in the Standard Bank Duo and Trail Challenge in Boschendal, and Mikaela Jonsson (19) winning her first Olympic Distance Triathlon at the Tinman Tri-series in Durban. On Saturday, 23 July 2016, Michael Lord competed in the Standard Bank Duo Challenge – the Duo Challenge Long, which consisted of a 25 km MTB and a 10 km trail run. During the bike leg, he had a quick start and managed to break away from the rest of the field with fellow competitor, Andrew Houston. Completing the bike leg together, Lord was then able to put some distance between him and Houston during the run, finishing in a winning time of 02h04m26s.

Says Lord of his weekend win: “The two of us rode the whole of the bike course together. I have never ridden Boschendal before. There are some absolutely stunning trails and awesome little nooks and areas on route. At one stage we were riding just below the cliff faces with huge views of the whole of the Franschoek Valley. I definitely want to ride here again. We finished the bike together and then I managed to get away on the run. Super fun race, thanks Andrew.” The TinMan Tri-series took place in Durban at the Suncoast Sundeck on Sunday, 24 July.

The TinMan Triathlon is a fast-paced, action-packed Triathlon and Running event. From the 4 different races offered, junior triathlon superstar, Mikaela Jonsson, competed in the tough, highly contested Ultra Tri Challenge - the Olympic Distance Triathlon - a 1km swim, a 30km cycle and a 10km run. Despite only being back in training for 3 weeks, Jonsson’s performance was impressive in all 3 stages, coming out of the water in a close 3rd in 13m27s, she gave it everything in the cycle leg, finishing in a close 2nd in 59m21s, and again ran hard to finish 2nd in 43m46s, winning in an overall time of 01h58m34, ahead of 2nd placed Teneal Featherby in 01h58s42, and 3rd placed Hayley Mee in 02h02m14.

Jonnson won women overall and her age category, but interestingly, as in all triathlons, the transition time taken between legs can mean the difference between winning and losing, as in this race. Jonnson’s race-time against Featherby was slower overall by 8 seconds, but 1m03s faster than Featherby in transition time.

Says Jonsson of her experience: “I'm so happy to have taken the win overall in my first-ever Olympic Distance Tri at the Tinman Triathlon in Durban. I had such a fantastic race. Thanks to some incredibly strong ladies for pushing me all the way, especially on the bike course. Finally feeling like myself again, after only being back at training for 3 weeks after battling with illness for over a month, and my first swim race after doing shoulder rehab for more than 2 months. I'm so grateful to everyone who has helped me with such patience and wisdom over the last few months. Onwards and upwards.”

Jeep Team McGregor takes his eleventh Berg River Canoe Marathon Title

Published: 19 July 2016

WESTERN CAPE, 19 JULY 2016 – The 55th annual Berg River Canoe Marathon took place from Wednesday 13th July to Saturday 16th July 2016 and saw paddlers from all over the world competing in the 4-day stage race covering 240 km from Paarl to Velddrif in the Western Cape.

It was a warm winter’s day in the Swartland for the first stage of the Berg River Canoe Marathon, matched with some heated racing on tough, low-water river conditions that eventually saw defending champions, Hank McGregor, set up an overnight lead after the 62km first stage.

With an eleventh Berg title in his sights, McGregor also claimed the first-to-bridge prize at the Hermon Bridge, going into the second stage of the race with a significant advantage in that he takes with him his time trial winning margin, which took his overall lead over Simon van Gysen to just 20 seconds, with Adrian Boros in third place overall, despite his second place finish on the Wednesday.

On Day Two, McGregor, with a lead of 20 seconds over Van Gysen, cut his head open on a branch – an accident, which opened a one minute gap for Van Gysen to get ahead. McGregor caught Van Gysen as they made their way from Zonquasdrift to Bridgetown, but the last two kilometres made all the difference. McGregor powered through to the finish as a tired Van Gysen was unable to keep up. The Hungarian, Adrian Boros, battled with the stage, allowing McGregor to gain a solid lead.

McGregor said: “I knew in the last few kilometres that I had to put the hammer down and I got a bit of a gap and I am happy with the result and another stage win”.

The infamous 72km third stage of the 2016 Berg River Canoe Marathon saw plenty of drama as the international duo of Adrian Boros and Petr Mojžíšek matched McGregor right up to the final end sprint.

The 72km stage from Bridgetown to Zoutkloof threatened to produce the goods following an exciting bunch start in the morning, which set off at a blistering pace, and the front group of four, McGregor, Boros, Mojžíšek, and local, Edgar Boehm Jnr, opened a significant gap at the first portage at the Misverstand Dam wall.

Said McGregor “A 72km stage is never going to be easy and it hurts, it doesn’t matter who you are. I was just really chuffed to be on the front bunch and I appreciated the great sportsmen that I was racing with.”

Despite the running repairs overnight, Jeep Team /Euro Steel/Kayak Centre star, Hank McGregor, won a well-contested end sprint on Friday’s stage 3, and with it, cemented his place at the front of the race for stage 4’s final 60 kilometre into Velddrif, the final hurdle between him and an eleventh Berg title.

Reaching the final day of the Berg River Marathon, McGregor started with a seven minute advantage, and this was enough to cement his eleventh Berg title win.  The world champion paddler was seldom seen alone in the stages of the race, but he managed to take the lead from the time trial to the end keeping a consistent speed throughout the marathon, leading to his eleventh Berg River Canoe Marathon title victory.

Concluded McGregor, “It’s not every day that you race against guys that you raced against in separate World Championships where they both came second behind me, but this year’s race was definitely a prestigious one with a couple world champions and a couple world champ medallists on the start line.”

Canoe King, McGregor, continues his world domination in Mauritius

Published: 05 July 2016

5 JULY 2016, DURBAN, SOUTH AFRICA – Canoe king, Hank McGregor (Jeep Team), continued his world-class reign of legendary back-to-back victories to claim his fourth Investec Mauritius Ocean Classic title on Saturday, 2 July 2016. The 26km event, which took place near Black River, Mauritius, also doubled as Round 1 of the 2016 ICF Ocean Racing World Cup, which is a new, three-part series on the world surfski calendar. Paddlers faced rough 25-knot downwind conditions at Saturday’s race, with McGregor commenting that “conditions were pretty wild out there, it was super cool! There were some wide-eyed paddlers.” It was a close race against McGregor (Jeep Team), with Australia’s Cory Hill and Michael Booth, and South Africa’s Jasper Mocké and Barry Lewin (Jeep Team), all battling it out for the title until the final two kilometres where McGregor edged ahead to claim the win in 1h08. Hill finished 2nd in 1h09, followed by Booth in 3rd (1h10), Mocké 4th (1h11m30) and Lewin 5th (1h11m57).

Said McGregor, “The final 2km saw us head into the notorious Le Morne Pass, where it’s a hard slog against strong headwinds to the end. I was able to get the lead going into this point, managing to keep it at three hundred metres all the way to the finish. I’m stoked with my fourth win here in a top-class field. The Mauritius Ocean Classic is one of my favourite surfski events as it is a very family-orientated race. This year, my wife Pippa and son Thorsten were here with me, and it was awesome to have their support!” Said Lewin, “I’m stoked with my 5th place finish in Mauritius. Love racing the top guys in the world, and the challenge of a wild ocean. Can't wait for next year.” Round 2 of the ICF Ocean Racing World Cup, the Nelo Summer Challenge, takes place in Portugal this weekend, 8 - 10 July 2016. The third and final event is happening in Tahiti in September 2016. It’s turning into another remarkable year for canoe king McGregor as he proves an unbeatable force in world surfski. At the end of May, he conquered the world’s toughest surfski ultra marathon, the 53km Maui Jim Molokai Surfski Challenge in Hawaii, for a third time. Just a few days later, he won the world’s oldest surfski event, the Illovo Pirates Umhlanga Pirates Surfski Race, in Durban. Then on 29 June, McGregor claimed victory at the FNB Durban Downwind, which is a 2016 World Surfski Series title event. In-between these surfski races, he also won the K1 title at the 2016 South African Canoe Marathon Championships in Cape Town, a result which has qualified him for the 2016 ICF Canoe Marathon World Championships taking place in Germany later this year.

2016 INVESTEC MAURITIUS OCEAN CLASSIC RESULTS:

  1. Hank McGregor (SA) - 1:08:46
  2. Cory Hill (AUS) - 1:09:43
  3. Michael Booth (AUS) - 1:10:18
  4. Jasper Mocké (SA) - 1:11:30
  5. Barry Lewin (SA) - 1:11:57

Other Jeep Team Results: BMX Jeep Team’s 16-year-old BMX athlete, Alex Dolman, took on riders much older than himself this weekend, as he competed in the Elite category at Rounds 4, 5 and 6 of the 2016 SA BMX National Age Group Series, which took place at the Rhino and Lion Reserve in Gauteng. Dolman managed to place 8th overall. OCR On Saturday, Jeep Team’s OCR champion, Thomas van Tonder, completed the Wolf Pack Challenge, an extreme, but fun, trail running event in Gauteng where there are no winners or losers. Started by Herman Mulder, the event has been designed for trail runners looking for a hard-core, no frills, back-to-basics physical challenge. The challenge comprised of five ascents of the Magaliesburg to the beacon above the Hartbeespoort Aerial Cableway. This equalled 1600m ascent over 21km.
