OSLO FJORD, NORWAY – This past weekend saw Jeep Team’s longest standing athlete, Barry Lewin (Jeep Team/Epic Kayaks) continue his successful European tour when he took the Gold medal at the Norway National Surfski Champs in Southern Oslo Fjord, just a week after winning Gold in the 2017 Seamasters Downwind surfski race in Sweden.  Norway National Surfski Champs was organised by the Oslo Kayak Club, and featured 25 strong paddlers, including international paddlers from South Africa, Germany and Sweden. Surfski paddling is still a young concept in Europe as the sport was only introduced at the Oslo Kayak Club in 2011. Conditions on race-day were very tough and flat with a 10-knot wind, making for a tactical 12km out-and-back race.  Lewin took the win in 56m49, ahead of German paddler Steffen Burkhardt in second in 57m30 and Gleb Greben from Norway in third in 57m40.

Greyling Displays Talent to Get Silver Medal in Tour Du Néouvielle, France

Published: 29 August 2017

SAINT-LARY-SOULAN, FRANCE - The Grand Raid Pyrenees, now in its 10th year, attracted over 4000 athletes, who, despite the weather, raced the Pyrenean summits in the south of France.

The 2017 edition of the Grand Raid Pyrenees included 5 races: the 5-stage/114km Pyrenees Tour Trail Challenge, the 220km Ultra Tour, the 120km Tour des Cirques, the 80km Tour des Lacs, and the 43km Tour du Néouvielle. South Africa’s top Ultra-Trail athlete, Christiaan Greyling (Jeep Team/Salomon/Garmin), and his wife and champion trail runner, Landie Greyling, tackled the technical Tour du Néouvielle along with almost 1400 other runners. The 43km/+2415m race started in the centre of Saint-Lary-Soulan, a ski village in south-western France, departing in the direction of Pla d'Adet, a steep climb frequently used as a stage finish in the Tour de France cycle race.  The runners climbed by roads and ski slopes up the Col du Portet mountain pass, and from there on past numerous lakes to reach the highest point in the race at Col de Bastanet at 2507m.

The race crossed the Hourquette de Caderolles, along the Col de Bastanet and Col de Portet, and cresting Cap de Pède before the descent to the finish in Vielle Aure. Greyling finished the race in an outstanding second place in 04:26:28, eight minutes behind race winner, Jaouad Zeroual. Third place went to Frenchman, Adrien Tuffery, in a time of 04:34:18. Greyling’s wife, Landie finished 1st in the women’s race and 12th overall in a time of 04:56:47. Said a triumphant Greyling, “It was a successful day for the Greylings in France. Landie won the women’s race in 4h56m, and I finished 2nd in 4h26m. When I crossed the finish line, I had no idea that I'd worked myself into 2nd place; I was just happy to feel good on the day after being plagued by a stomach bug leading up to the race. The scenery was mind-blowing, the views were heavenly, and we are loving the experience of running in new places; the 2400m ascent was indeed a good test for the races to come this year!”

Gold and Silver for McGregor at SA Flatwater Marathon Championships

Published: 17 August 2017

A K2 Gold and a K1 Silver medal is how the world’s most successful paddler ended his South African Marathon Team selection campaign at the South African Flatwater Marathon Canoeing Championships at Camps Drift, Pietermaritzburg this past weekend.Hank McGregor (Jeep Team, Euro Steel) knew there were just two spots on the national team in each age division and with the ICF Canoe Marathon World Championships just under a month away, only the best of South Africa’s paddling crop would make it through K1 and K2 selection.

The paddling giant, McGregor, made no mistakes. In Saturday’s K1 title race, reigning World Marathon Champion, McGregor, battled it out against seven-time Dusi Canoe Marathon winner, Andy Birkett and Czech national team paddler, Jakub Adam. The final lap of the sought-after K1 title race ended in a sprint for finish with Birkett pipping McGregor to the line by just two seconds in 02:12:16 with McGregor in 02:12 18, and Adam in 02:12:20. The K1 result ensures Birkett and McGregor will represent South Africa at the highly anticipated, ICF World Marathon Champs to be held in South Africa at Pietermaritzburg’s Camps Drift from 8 to 10 September.

Said a happy Hank McGregor, “Job done - selection for the South African Marathon Team. It was some awesome racing in PMB. I really enjoyed my race and am stoked to be racing marathons again. I’m really looking forward to World Champs with my fellow team mate, Andy Birkett!” The men's K2 race was just as fast and furious after whittling down to just four boats turning for the final 800m dash to the finish of the eight-lap, 30km race with Hank McGregor/Jasper Mocké, Andy Birkett/Jean Van der Westhuyzen, Stuart Maclaren/ Kenneth Rice, and Brandon van der Walt/Clint Cook all firing for the line. McGregor and Mocké reigned victorious beating Birkett and van der Westhuyzen by just two seconds in 02:03:13. Birkett and van der Westhuyzen (02:03:15) fought to the line to beat third placed Maclaren and Rice by just one second in the most exciting K2 finish of all time.  "This was the first time Jasper and I jumped into a boat together since last year's world championships in Brandenberg. It was cat and mouse all the way to the finish. We managed to find our rhythm as the day went along, and were trying out new things to better ourselves because in the end, a win by a split second or two is all you have. Everything helps." said McGregor
