Closure of Bambanani Pipes and Fittings (PTY) LTD

Published: 23 October 2017

Press Release: 16 October 2017

After 19-years of operation, Macdonald Holdings has announced that it will be closing Bambanani Pipes and Fittings, its pipe manufacturing and coating division.

The decision comes after 24 months of irregular project work and sustained losses which have been unavoidable in the current market, despite every effort made to revitalise the business. General Manager, Mr. Chris o’ Neill says, “Unfortunately the business has relied on the public sector’s manufacturing and maintenance spend and as this has begun shrinking so has the ability to keep the doors open and profitable. It is never an easy decision when people’s livelihoods are at stake, which is why we have taken every step possible, despite two years of losses, to look at positive solutions for the business. Sadly though, none of these has resulted in a marked turnaround and as such the shareholders have decided to call an end to the business.”

Bambanani was formed in 1998 by a management buy-out of the ex-Hall Longmore operation that was based in Luipaardsvlei, Krugersdorp. In 2008 Bambanani became a member of the Macdonald Group of Companies and is a 100% BEE owned company with a level 1 BBBEE scorecard. It seems though, that despite these positives including a massive investment in a new facility and the very real consensus from clients of a brilliant product, that another once successful business is taking the brunt of a market downturn.

RS Components adds robust and high-specification industrial micro-miniature connectors

Published: 24 July 2017

Micro-D connector series from Norcomp offers real alternative to military-spec connectors in industrial applications

Johannesburg, South Africa, 25 July, 2017 - RS Components (RS), the trading brand of Electrocomponents plc (LSE:ECM), the global distributor for engineers, has announced availability of a new range of micro-miniature industrial connectors manufactured by Norcomp, which are a cost-effective and highly capable alternative to the use of military- and aerospace-rated micro-D connectors.

The 380/381/382/960 series of Micro-D connectors and cable assemblies has been designed for commercial markets including robotics, telecommunications and instrumentation equipment, and other applications where space is at a premium yet which also require a robust shielded I/O connector system.

The Norcomp Micro-D series is available in three industry-standard sizes – 9, 15 and 25-way – as well as in vertical and right angle board-mount and cable-mount options. Offering a contact spacing of just 1.27mm (0.050-inch), the connectors are less than a third the size of standard D-sub connector types, yet deliver a metal-to-metal interface that provides robust mechanical connection and shield effectiveness.

Able to mate with most commercial competitor products, other features of the series include a 1A contact rating and an operating temperature range of –55C to +85°C.  The Norcomp range of industrial Micro-D connectors is now available from RS.

RS Components introduces latest PCB connectivity technology from Phoenix Contact

Published: 25 May 2017

SDDC 3.5mm terminal block added to innovative SKEDD connector range – supports easy wire-to-board connectivity and reduces cost

Johannesburg, South Africa, 25 May, 2017 - RS Components (RS), the trading brand of Electrocomponents plc (LSE:ECM), the global distributor for engineers, has announced availability of the latest connectivity device based on the innovative SKEDD plug-in technology. Delivering a reduction in purchase and installation cost, the new series of 3.5mm-pitch SDDC PCB terminal blocks from Phoenix Contact is ideal for designing in wire-to-board connectivity for a wide range of general electronics design applications including automotive, industrial and consumer electronics, large electrical goods, control cabinets, power tools and medical equipment.

PCB terminal blocks enable the easy and secure transmission of signals, data, and power directly to a board. Meeting the need for smaller and simpler devices with ever-increasing functionality, Phoenix Contact’s direct-plug-in SKEDD technology enables direct contact between connector and PCB without the need for a plug and header combination, thereby saving cost. No soldering is required, as the terminal block features latches positioned on each side of the device, which operate locking pins to ensure secure and vibration resistant connection to the PCB.

The SKEDD design also enables the contacts to have sufficient force to create a gas-tight connection on the PCB. Saving time and avoiding the need for extra tooling, the series offers screwless push-in spring terminations for wire connections. In addition, the series is environmentally friendly as the devices can be easily removed from PCBs and recycled. Designed to save space, with availability in a range of models from 2-16 positions offering 4-32 poles, the devices have a double-row configuration that makes them ideal for high-density PCB applications.

The SDDC 3.5 series is suitable for conductor cross-sections from 0.2 to 1.5mm2, and is designed to handle currents up to 8A and voltages up to 160V.  The SDDC 3.5mm SKEDD terminal blocks from Phoenix Contact are now available from RS.

WEC Projects acquires majority stake in IWC

Published: 13 July 2016

ISANDO, JOHANNESBURG, 12 July 2016 – WEC Projects (Pty) Ltd, a contractor specialising in turnkey water and wastewater treatment solutions in South Africa, has acquired a majority stake in Industrial Water Cooling (Pty) Ltd (IWC), a company specialising in cooling tower and industrial cooling solutions, IWC announced today.

The partnership is effective immediately and replaces private equity company, MEDU Capital’s stake in IWC.

“I am very pleased to announce that we have a new business partner in WEC Projects. I am of the firm belief that in WEC we have found a like-minded business partner that understands the contracting environment in which we operate,” comments Roger Rusch, Managing Director of IWC

Johannesburg-based WEC Projects has been operating as a contractor in the water and wastewater treatment industry since 2002. The company specialises in designing, manufacturing and installing water and wastewater treatment plants, such as packaged potable water treatment plants, sewage treatment plants, industrial filtration plants, submerged membrane bioreactors, reverse osmosis plants, reverse osmosis pre-treatment systems, dissolved air floatation devices and lamella settlers.

WEC Projects are also pioneers in biogas to energy technology, having designed, supplied and installed South Africa’s first such plant at a municipal wastewater site. The technology converts wastewater sludge into biogas that is then used to fuel a gas engine that produces electricity. As a result of this technology, municipalities are able to subsidise their electrical costs by what they are able to produce themselves, utilising a waste material that now has significant commercial value.

IWC, originally founded in 1986 as Industrial Water Cooling, specialises in evaporative water cooling, heat exchangers and GRP solutions for numerous applications across the mining, power generation, petrochemical, and water and sanitation industries.

EDITOR’S NOTES
