Dreambody Fitness: You don’t need the perfect body, you just need you

Published: 16 October 2018

At Dreambody Fitness there is no such thing as the perfect body. At this fitness studio the ideal shape isn’t one that steps out of the magazines, it’s the one that steps into the gym and into a healthier future.

With leading fitness guru and trainer, Steve Mululu, at the helm, Dreambody Fitness is about building a healthy lifestyle and strong body. Dreambody Fitness is also about people, real lives and realistic goals. The gym has developed a six-week transformation programme designed specifically for beginners. In six weeks, anyone following the programme will see improvements in cardiovascular fitness, strength and energy. If the program works, you get your money back.

“We believe in people and community and relationships,” says Steve Mululu, co-founder of Dreambody Fitness. “We know every one of our members, we spend time with them and we help them to achieve realistic fitness goals. From the moment someone walks in the door they know that they are somewhere that doesn’t judge them by their weight or shape. Here, we welcome people who want to make a change without feeling like they are miles behind everyone else.” This philosophy has paid off.

Dreambody Fitness has garnered a reputation for making people feel welcome and inspired and has expanded from its original location at The Core in Sunninghil to Woodlands in Woodmead. Both gyms have hands-on trainers that help members to do exercises corrently and select the best possible training programmes for their fitness goals. These trainers not only work closely with members but are part of the gym membership cost.

“Every Wednesday I host a Nutrition Workshop where I give in-depth insight into why certain foods are unhealthy and how to identify the right foods to eat,” says Mululu. “I don’t like the lies sold by the fitness industry and nobody should be made to feel that they are less or that they can’t just because they don’t have a certain body type or shape. I want people to really feel that fitness is fun. I want people to feel that they are doing this for themselves and to live a longer, healthier life.” The two gyms – Woodmead and Sunninghill – are small and community-minded.

Every person who walks through the door is made to feel as if they are part of the family. “People join our gym thinking that they are there to get that summer body but they stay because they become part of our family,” concludes Mululu. “Here we don’t believe in investing into your health for a season, we believe in giving you a place where you can feel a difference, every day.”

Plantronics Backbeat FIT Series for active fitness, available in South Africa

Published: 14 March 2018

We’ve all been there: you’ve stretched, your running shoes are on, you’ve lined up the playlist that will help you more fully enjoy your workout, then…your headphones are nowhere to be found.

A wave of disappointment washes over you. You’re left with two frustrating choices: the poorly sized set that came free with your phone and you’re pretty sure you stuffed in the junk drawer (your rhythm disrupted as you push one tinny-sounding headphone back in your sweaty ear), or the simple sound of your breathing in your ears and your footfalls on the road.

Purists might love the latter. Sometimes you need more.

As more and more South Africans focus on fitness, it does not matter whether you’re a hip-hop fan or a classical music buff, a custom soundtrack is your own secret weapon when it comes to running. Whether your poison is Raekwon or Rachmaninoff, science knows: music makes you run faster and for longer.

A 2015 study in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research found that “music was able to activate the pre-frontal cortex area, minimize perceptions, improve performance and accelerate recovery during 5 km of running.”

Runners averaged 27:33 when running in silence; 26:00 when listening to slow motivational music; and 26:06 when listening to music with a fast beat. They all got out of the gates faster with music playing, with the first 800 meters particularly impacted.

As Dr. Costas Karageorghis of Brunel University in London, a leading expert on the psychology of exercise music, has written, music can be thought of as an “a type of legal performance-enhancing drug.” However good your playlist though, it’s only as good as the headphones you play it through. Tiny sounding and poorly fitted headphones can impact your performance as badly as the wrong running shoes.

At Plantronics, we think we’ve nailed it with Plantronics BackBeat FIT and our BackBeat FIT 300 Series and BackBeat FIT 500 Series. Plantronics BackBeat FIT is specifically designed for a high-motion outdoor workout, such as running, while BackBeat FIT 300 and 500 are more indoor gym companions. Sweat-proof and with a battery life of up to eight hours, these are a perfect companion to your training, whether you’re braving the elements digging in for that ultra-marathon or lifting and working your core at the gym.

They’re all very comfortable, completely wireless and lightweight and durable owing to their nano-coat. The added functionality of easy to access on-ear controls means no more interruptions to dig out your phone when that playlist goes awry.

If you’re looking for the perfect workout companion, check our local authorized South African distributors and partners for more information www.plantronics.com/za

According to Zumbathon For A Cause organiser, Didier Moestus, this year's event is looking to create more awareness around World Aids Day and people affected by or living with the disease in The Western Cape.“Our team conducted research regarding who the best organisation was involved with informing, helping and preventing HIV and Aids education and we were touched by Hope Cape Town and the work that they do. We actually met with some of the children who come from families devastated by this disease and it was an eye opener for us. Hope Cape Town's dedication to save lives is authentic and touching but also, they are doing it with a smile on their face,” he says.

The theme colour of this year's Zumbathon For A Cause event is purple and pink, and all Zumba lovers, fitness fans, moms, and personalities who want just an excuse to smile and dance in the morning, are encouraged to join in on the fun on the day.

Says Moestus: “Participants can look forward to two outdoor classes of Zumba, as well as a great opportunity to meet new faces and network in the process. We have a number of great prizes on offer too, so all around the family-centered event will be a fun day out for the entire family.”Moestus adds that Zumbathon for A Cause is targeted at people who relate to wellness and health, as well as everyone who wants to make a contribution to fight for Aids awareness.

Renowned SA Zumba instructor, Lucas Mthenjane, will spear-head the event as the main Zumba instructor on the outdoor stage.“Lucas is like a Zumba guru on this continent, and he has travelled the world to learn new aspects of that discipline throughout the years of his practise and is the only one who gives license to Zumba instructors in South Africa. We are very proud to have him involved with us. He is the engine of this event and we are really impressed with his passion, enthusiasm and creativity for this discipline,” says Moestus.

TREND ALERT: Sweating Is the New Kind of Cool

Published: 04 July 2016

Are you part of the growing sweater’s revolution in South Africa? If you don’t know what this means then you are not sweating nearly as much as everyone else these days. Have you noticed there are more South Africans jogging and running in the mornings and late afternoons everywhere you go? We currently have an increasing community of sweaters in every suburb simply because it’s cool to be fit and health conscious nowadays. It is trending to an extent that the life expectancy for both male and female South Africans is now 62 years of age, which is an increase of eight and half years since 2015.

This is good news if you take into consideration the “fat problem” South Africans face. Did you know South African children are the third most obese youth in the world? While research shows that nearly two thirds of our population is overweight. Surprisingly the gender’s responsible for these stats are women. 70% of women are overweight. Basically around 4 in every 10 women are classified as clinically obese in this country. Healthwise we are talking about women with a body mass index (BMI) of more than 30.

We can only celebrate the increasing number of sweaters we see on a daily basis taking their health a lot more serious. We also celebrate every South African with a fitness plan in place like a gym membership or simply being part of a running/walking club. There is also an increasing number of community based sport teams. It is no longer rare to find a group of women playing soccer or netball on a Saturday morning at local sports and recreational facilities. Furthermore, a number of the youth population consider fun runs and/or walks as trendy social events.

We lead sedentary lifestyles filled with stress, lack of sleep and bad nutrition. Thanks to this we are faced with alarming obesity stats. Let’s take a typical work day for example, everyone is travelling to and from work daily and spend close to four hours sitting. From this commuters could lose about 40 days a year (that’s more than a month) stuck in traffic. A corporate individual possibly spends around 80% of their working hours sitting in front of a computer.

Come lunchtime most corporate individuals pop into cars then drive-off to their favourite fast food franchise and to make it back to work on time, they choose to use the drive-through option instead of physically walking into the store. This is about 30 minutes to an hour of more sitting. The food choice here is a bigger concern.

It goes without saying that fast food is unhealthy and don’t be fooled by those pre-packed microwavable meals that’s so popular for lunchtime either. A home cooked meal or homemade sandwich is always the healthier option, so always remember the saying “the whiter the bread the quicker you’re dead” hopefully this will help you choose brown or rye over white bread although they might be unpopular choices, they’re still the healthiest options available.

Gabriel Eksteen, Registered Dietitian at the HSF believes “ultimately the onus is on the individual to lose weight. Once an individual decides to lose weight, they need to develop a strategy to reach their goal. There is no one-size-fits-all approach to losing weight effectively, but sustainable weight loss involves making changes to your diet and your physical activity that you can sustain long-term.”

The key is to make physical activity more pleasurable that it easily becomes part of your daily routine. One pretty amazing way of achieving this is by the use of activity trackers like Fitbit South Africa. They encourage you to keep moving. Tracking your steps, distance, calories burned and active minutes. Send you reminders to move and automatically recognise when you start exercising. They are incredibly motivating. A personal trainer you can take everywhere. Monitor your progress on the Fitbit App. Plus, it’s a great fashion accessory that makes a health statement.
