Engen Welgemoed handed over a cheque for R15 000 to the Alta du Toit Aftercare Centre at the recent “Big Charity Concert”. The Alta du Toit Aftercare Centre provides physical and nursing care to over 200 adults with intellectual disabilities, and ensures that they are developed to reach their full potential.

The annual Big Charity Concert, which took place on 6 September at the Bellville Civic Centre and attracted a crowd of around 750 people, sees actors and singers from the centre perform alongside well-known artists.

“This is the fourth consecutive year that our concert has been staged and our audiences are still overwhelmed by the warmth and charm that the performance radiates. We are so proud of our performers and very grateful to the professional artists that participate,” says Marina Van der Meulen, Alta du Toit Aftercare Centre’s fundraiser.Engen Welgemoed owner, Faizel Hattia believes that social investment is one of the most important pillars of any business. “It’s crucial to continually give back to the community in which we operate, which is why we have supported Alta du Toit Aftercare Centre for the past eleven years,” he says. Engen Welgemoed’s association with the centre stretches back to 2007.

“Seeing first-hand the challenges that residents faced back then, as well as the professional care given to the mentally disabled, made me adopt the centre as the main community project for Engen Welgemoed,” says Faizel. “The centre is situated close to our station and over the years our funding has assisted with a number of improvements, including education and skills development programmes, new training equipment and life skills workshops,” he adds.

Residents at the centre hail from across the Western Cape, including disadvantaged areas.

Many attend workshops and receive skills development training aimed at developing them to their full potential.“We are extremely grateful to Engen Welgemoed for their support over the years and their commitment to our centre,” says Van der Meulen.

Engen’s Corporate Social Investment Manager, Adhila Hamdulay says the company views its responsibility to society as being as important as its responsibility towards its shareholders and employees.

“We are fully committed to supporting people with disabilites, in line with our CSI goals. But this is much more than just a box-ticking exercise for us. We know this is a key area of need, and are humbled to play a part in supporting skills development at the centre,” adds Hamdulay.
