Calling all Soweto beauty queens in waiting!   Businesswoman and former Miss South Africa Basetsana Kumalo began her career as Miss Soweto, a pageant that today continues to offer vivacious young women a chance to make their dreams come true.

Semi-finals for the 2014 Miss Soweto contest takes place at Uncle Tom’s Hall in Orlando West this Saturday, 15 November 2014, starting at 10am. Hopefuls should be aged between 18 and 24 and must bring a swimming costume and shoes to wear in the semi-final round.

The Miss Soweto pageant has become an institution in the township since the first event was held in 1979. To date, almost three dozen beauty queens have held this prestigious title and have gone on to make their mark in the world – including Kumalo (then Makgalemele) and Miss Universe semi-finalist Augustine Masilela-Chuene.

The contest is sponsored by White Star and the total value of the winner’s prize is R30 000, with the 2014 Miss Soweto being crowned at a glittering gala event on 6 December 2014.

Potential participants are welcome to come along to Uncle Tom’s to audition on Saturday, with the entry fee being R200.
