A green arts festival? Keeping in step with the stream of environmental consciousness, the theme for the Innibos Arts Festival, running from 1 to 5 July in Nelspruit, is 100% Bosbewus.
Not only will evergreen artists like Johnny Clegg, Chris Chameleon, Steve Hofmeyr and Sandra Prinsloo entertain the festival goers with an outstanding programme, but specific conservation projects will also be launched.

A huge recycling project, which is supported by one of the festival’s green partners, Sappi, will be undertaken on the festival grounds, which cater for approximately 100 000 festival goers. Special recycling points for recyclable items such as glass, cans and paper will be seen everywhere on the grounds and 'Green Ambassadors' will provide on-the-spot information.

Some of the sponsors like Standard Bank, Vodacom, Sappi and Coca-Cola are also going to embark on their own green projects to form part of the Bosbewus campaign.

As usual, the festival programme will be packed with the best entertainment. Debut productions include a commissioned work written by the well known Harry Kalmer. Tobie Cronjé takes the lead in this comedy. The evergreen stage production Taraboemdery by Chris Barnard will be staged for the first time in twenty years.

Other hits like Op die vrou af 2 with Pedro Kruger and Jolette Odendaal in the lead roles and 'Samoerai', Schalk Schoombie’s award winning drama are also in the line-up. The Nagtegaal winner, Die Naaimasjien, written by Rachelle Greef with Sandra Prinsloo in the leading role and Bure op die bank with Neels van Jaarsveld and Zane Meas will add to the connoisseur’s menu.

One of the highlights of the 2009 programme is the light classical programme which will be hosted in the Lowveld Botanical Gardens. With Ladismith Black Mumbazo, the Bala brothers and Zanne Stapelberg on the programme, this concert promises to be an unforgettable experience.

Apart from the top theatre productions and cabaret, Innibos will also host some of South Africa’s most popular artists on the festival grounds. Kurt Darren, Emo Adams, Mango Groove, Eden and Nicholis Louw are only a few of the more than 40 artists who will be performing on the Standard Bank stage every night. And of course there will be dozens of food and interesting art stalls, as well as a few open stages to provide all day entertainment.

Books and art productions will not be left behind – Innibos will once again do the Boeke-Ontbyt, the popular Boeke-crawl and a number of select art exhibitions including a solo exhibition by well known South African artist, Bettie Cilliers-Barnard.

Innibos attracted more than 100 000 visitors in 2008, and promises to hit the target again in 2009 with superb entertainment and a conservation message which will make a deep impact. We are indeed attiring the arts with a green coat.
