South African debtors hounded by SMS

Submitted by: Evan Robinson
{pp}South African debtors have nowhere left to hide from SMSs reminding them of their overdue accounts.

Until recently, only big business had access to SMS functionality for reminding their clients of overdue accounts and monthly payments. One year ago, DebtHound began offering an affordable scheduled SMS service to SMMEs for the purpose of debt collection, and as of now has added bulk SMS to their list of services.

SMS has become a staple for businesses that require simple, immediate and cost-effective communication with clients. In 2003, Randburg-based Munnik Basson DaGama (MBD) implemented SMS for debt collection and noted a 60% reduction in overall collection costs and an increased number of inbound calls. Willemse Benade Venter Davis, debt collectors for companies such as Edgars and Joshua Doore, switched their main debt collecting focus to SMS around the same time.

“SMS is immediate, personal and unavoidable – it is these characteristics that make SMS the obvious choice over conventional letters, phone calls and emails. SMS is also fundamental to the South African way of life; businesses that ignore this channel are not in touch with their clients.” says Evan Robinson, CEO.

DebtHound continues to offer low cost SMS communication tools for small businesses online via their website at www.DebtHound.biz.
