In PROTEC’s 40th anniversary year, the PROTEC branches’ Class of 2022 did the NPO proud with a 100% matric pass rate, an 83% bachelor pass rate, and 293 distinctions in total, averaging 1.4 distinctions per student.

PROTEC is a national NPO established by SA Institute of Civil Engineers in Soweto in 1982, which runs an educational support programme for disadvantaged youngsters with potential in maths and science to prepare them for successful STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) careers. Over the four decades since inception, PROTEC has seen more than 30 000 learners successfully pass through the PROTEC programme and become qualified professionals.

PROTEC’s eight branches – seven in KwaZulu-Natal and one in Mpumalanga – accommodated 203 matriculants from disadvantaged schools in 2022, and delivered the programme in a hybrid model incorporating tablets, virtual learning, and in-person sessions, all of which contributed significantly to the Class of 2022’s success.

Balan Moodley, CEO of PROTEC, says this result is particularly noteworthy because these 2022 matriculants experienced the full effects of the pandemic in their crucial Grade 10 and 11 years in 2020 and 2021, and embarked on their matric year under Covid conditions. “Our students, facilitators, and branch staff put in the hours, under often very trying conditions regarding connectivity and available devices, and came through victorious. We’re very proud of them.”

Moodley says the PROTEC programme is scalable, and is only limited by the amount of funding that comes in from the private sector. “It would be our privilege to support many more matriculants to achieve their full STEM potential and embark on desperately needed careers in engineering, sciences, medicine, and other related fields. We applaud the partners who do support us, demonstrating their confidence in our ability to deliver excellent results.”

PROTEC’s top 10 matriculants in the Class of 2022

8 PROTEC Inanda Bennedict Majola (m) – 6 Inanda Comprehensive
9 Telkom Tshwane Khanya Chirwa (f) – 6 Reitumetse
10 PROTEC Tongaat Nontando Dlodlo (f) – 5 Mountview

*Matimba Manganyi, the Top PROTEC Learner for 2022, achieved 99% for Maths and 100% for Physical Sciences for which he received a Gauteng award for Physical Sciences

**Ntsako Maluleka achieved seven distinctions, 100% for Maths, and 98% for Physical Sciences, and she will be studying BSc Chemistry at Wits University this year

***Azandizibusiso Mbonambi received the ‘Top Achiever Award’ in the iLembe District in KZN

Other PROTEC branch highlights are:

  • Three PROTEC branches achieved bachelor pass rates over 90% – Inanda (94%) and Tongaat (97%) in KZN, and Nelspruit (95%) in Mpumalanga
  • PROTEC Tongaat’s top six learners achieved a total of 31 distinctions
  • PROTEC Mandeni’s bachelor pass rate improved from 59% in 2021 to 80% in 2022
  • PROTEC Umbogintwini’s bachelor pass rate improved from 41% in 2021 to 77% in 2022
  • PROTEC Nelspruit’s top two matriculants are Kgomotso Khumalo and Lesego Khumalo (not related) from Jacob Mdluli Secondary School in Kabokweni, who each achieved five distinctions

PROTEC’s five projects also showed overall improvements on last year’s results, with some striking achievements. The projects are Altron Soweto (Gauteng), Altron Dimbaza (EC), Dedisa Motherwell (EC), Telkom Tshwane (Gauteng), and Telkom Port Elizabeth (EC).

PROTEC Altron Soweto is the Best Overall Performing PROTEC Programme of 2022 as the only PROTEC branch or project to achieve a pass rate and bachelor pass rate of 100%. The 27 students achieved a total of 45 distinctions, with three learners achieving five distinctions each: Nkosingiphile Ngwaqa from Fidelitas High in Diepkloof, Dingaan Manjate from Emshukantambo in Pimville, and Ntando Kumalo from Lofentse Girls in Orlando East.

The Telkom projects follow a different model to PROTEC’s and incorporate all students, rather than selecting those with an aptitude for maths and sciences, which is the traditional formula for PROTEC’s programme. PROTEC Telkom Tshwane accommodated 991 matriculants from 19 schools in the Garankuwa, Tshwane West district, of which 806 passed and 378 achieved a bachelor pass.

In addition to the strong showing by Telkom Tshwane in PROTEC’s top 10 learners, worth noting is Kegomoditswe Mokwele from Reitumetse Secondary School, who is Joint Top PROTEC English Learner. He achieved six distinctions, 88% for English and 94% for Mathematics and Physical Sciences, and is at the University of Cape Town studying for a BSc in Maths and Science.

Altron Dimbaza’s Asekhona Danster is also Joint Top English Learner in PROTEC, having achieved 88% in English and three distinctions.

PROTEC Dedisa Motherwell achieved a 100% pass rate and improved the bachelor pass rate from 47% in 2021 to 81% in 2022.

Moodley adds, “The innumerable unknowns and challenges facing these youngsters in disadvantaged communities and schools make their achievements that much more inspiring. I am sure statistics would show that by far the majority of the 2022 maths and sciences distinctions would have been achieved by students in the top 200 of a total of about 6 000 high schools in South Africa. PROTEC’s average bachelor pass rate for branches and projects excluding Telkom, which has a different curriculum to PROTEC’s, of 84% against the national average of 38% is an encouraging reflection of our commitment to deliver the best support, material, mentoring, and training of all learners in our programme.”

Although load shedding may throw a spanner in the works, there are still plenty of ways to complete your studies when the lights go out. Here, the team at FundiConnect reveals 3 ways for students to study effectively during load shedding.

With load shedding stages at an all-time high, many South African students are wondering how to keep up with their studies without electricity. Luckily, there are ways to navigate load shedding and still study for tests and exams.

Whether you’re a high school learner studying for exams or a student trying to complete your thesis, these 3 methods for studying effectively during load shedding will help you achieve your academic goals.

1. Download a Load Shedding App

Load shedding apps like EskomSePush help you keep track of the load shedding schedule, meaning you’ll know exactly when you’ll be in the dark.

Knowing when load shedding is set to strike will allow you to prepare and potentially avoid studying by candlelight. You’ll essentially be able to create your study timetable around the load shedding schedule and make backup plans for when there’s no electricity.

For example, if you know you have an assignment due, and stage 6 load shedding is in place, you can go to a coffee shop with Wi-Fi to complete your work without having to stress about power.

2. Make Use of Helpful Gadgets During Load Shedding

Making use of helpful electronic gadgets is a surefire way to beat load shedding and help you study effectively when there’s no electricity.

Now, you may be wondering, which gadgets should you be using during load shedding? Let’s take a look:

  • Power banks: A good power bank will allow you to keep your smartphone and tablet charged during a power out. Charging your electronic devices will allow you to keep track of time and work on any tasks or assignments throughout any stage of load shedding.
  • Rechargeable lights: Rechargeable lights are a great way to keep the room lit while your skimming over your notes before a big test or exam.
  • External hard drives: Make losing documents a thing of the past and be sure to save all your important tasks, assignments, projects and essays on your external hard drive.

3. Form Study Groups During Load Shedding

A great way to study during load shedding is to form a study group with some friends. Not only will you be able to beat the load shedding schedule by going to someone else’s house, but you’ll also reap the benefits that study groups have to offer.

Some additional benefits of forming a study group during load shedding are:

You can use your friend’s electricity during load shedding and do research for your studies together.Study groups help you retain information better as you’re able to discuss the topics at hand and share ideas with one another Forming a study group will keep you and your friends accountable as you’ll notice if someone isn’t putting in the same effort or attending the study groups.

Faahkir Bestman (19) was always destined for greatness. From the moment he first stepped onto a dance floor, it was clear to all who saw him that he had something special.

Dubbed Hanover Park's Billy Elliot, the young Capetonian caught the eye of Abeedah Medell of the famed Eoan Group when he was just eight years old.

Believing in his talents, Abeedah gave Faahkir the formative training he needed and encouraged him to dream beyond his reality.

With each step, Faahkir grew stronger and more determined to dance on the big stages of the world.

At just twelve years old, he won the inaugural Christopher Kindo scholarship, allowing him to attend the National School of the Arts in Johannesburg. In Grade 9, Intocast SA selected him for their bursary programme which covered all his expenses through high school.

Before his final matric exams, Faahkir was awarded the opportunity of a lifetime: a scholarship to attend the prestigious Joffrey Ballet School in New York. But he needs help to ensure that he can sustain himself when he is there and be ready for all eventualities.

The Johannesburg Youth Ballet (JYB) has taken up the cause and is driving and managing a fundraising campaign on BackaBuddy, to ensure that Faahkir has everything he needs for his time at the Joffrey Ballet.

Since the launch of the campaign, more than R90 000 has been raised with kind contributions from 81 donors, towards his fundraising target of R150 000, which will comfortably secure Faahkir’s needs for the year.

Funds raised will cover Faahkir’s visa and passport costs, his return flights to New York, his medical insurance, clothing and dance gear, bedding and cooking utensils for his residence, as well as a small amount of pocket money for his stay.

Faahkir has dedicated his entire life to his craft and has worked hard to achieve the success he has. WIth help from the public, Faahkir will be able to take the next step in his journey, and dance on the world’s stage.

"There are many talented young dancers who want to make a career out of dance, but it is perhaps once or twice in a lifetime that someone with Faahkir's talent, commitment, passion, and focus to achieve despite adversity crosses your path. I feel honoured and privileged to have worked with Faahkir on his dance journey. I have seen his growth as an artist in all genres of dance. He is eager to learn, takes and applies corrections, and is passionate about everything he does. He is a bright and humble young man, with incredible stage presence, that I know is destined for greatness." - says Mark Hawkins (Artistic Director of the Johannesburg Youth Ballet)

All additional funds raised by the campaign will be used to establish  “The Bestman Bursary” to assist other young dancers waiting in the wings to dance their dream!

The Youth Ballet is a registered NPC with public benefit status, meaning that all donations will receive a Section 18 A certificate for tax purposes.

Together, we can fly Faahkir to the Joffrey Ballet in New York, where he will have the chance to reach his full potential and achieve his dreams. Let's make it happen for this talented and soulful young man!

Fundi celebrates with the Class of 2022

Top matric performers of 2022 were honoured in glittering celebrations around the country this week. Hosted by the Department of Education, the national and regional events acknowledged their exceptional hard work in a challenging year; encouraging them to continue the next part of their learning journeys with the same commitment and dedication. Fundi was there to celebrate with teachers, parents and the matric guests of honour – sponsoring prizes for top achievers and sharing their excitement as they were called onto the stage.

Matrics across South Africa experienced mixed emotions on Thursday with the release of their final results. For many, this effectively marks their transition to becoming tertiary learners or active job seekers this year. With young learners challenged – particularly towards the end of the year – with load-shedding and Covid whilst studying for and writing their exams, the Class of 2022 can hold their heads high and are well-prepared for what lies ahead, says Mala Suriah, CMO of Fundi.

“Students continue demonstrating a spirit of possibility and resilience when it comes to their achievements,” notes Suriah. “The pass rate of 80.1% demonstrates this; up from that of 76.4% in 2021. We’re also seeing our young leaders of the future very clear on next steps and how they want to contribute to society and building South Africa. Many of the hopes and dreams shared at these celebrations speak to a generation that wants to make a real difference. We should all continue to watch this space!”

The national awards held in Gauteng on Thursday were followed by regional awards across provinces on Friday. Fundi supported the national announcements, sponsoring 33 learners with mall vouchers of R1 500 each. The team was also on hand in the North-West, Limpopo, Free State and Mpumalanga to congratulate top performers with goodie bags geared towards their next steps.

“As an organisation with student success at the core of our DNA, it’s critical for us to support these learners as they now take their next steps,” says Suriah. “For some this will mean registering in the formal tertiary space, for others it could mean a less traditional learning path through a combination of online and short courses. Our role is to help as many students as possible make this happen – starting now. Experience in the space has taught us that holistic support is critical for long-term success.”

With celebrations expected to continue into the weekend, Suriah invited matrics to use the weeks that follow to consolidate plans and get started on their next chapter: “If you haven’t connected with us yet to find out how we can help you on your journey, please do. Our Fundiverse (www.fundi.co.za) has been designed to unlock everything you need as a student: from funding to accommodation, technology and even data, all the way through to coaching and peer advice on our FundiConnect platform. Students needing bursaries should also visit our NPO, the Fundi Foundation to see how and if we can assist.”

As the 2022 Independent Examination Board (IEB) matriculants celebrate the release of their final results, Brainline’s matric class has illustrated the advantages of online learning by achieving a phenomenal 82.4% pass rate overall with 62.96% of these candidates achieving university exemption.

The group further achieved an impressive 127 A’s and 278 B’s, which Brainline attributes to the benefits of online learning combined with the sheer tenacity of its learners.

“This year’s results send a clear and powerful message that online learning offers a number of advantages as an alternative to the traditional brick-and-mortar school. Online learning provides an ideal model to learners who, for various reasons, want or need the flexibility and sense of self-reliance that this learning model allows. This cohort has, like their predecessors, achieved exceptional marks and earned their nationally recognised and accredited matric certificates,” notes Coleen Cronje, CEO of Brainline.

Founded in 1987, Brainline is the first online education provider to be recognised by the IEB. Today it provides an online learning platform to thousands of diverse learners in a wide range of subjects, including a few that are less common in online learning such as music, drama, equine studies and consumer studies.

“As Brainline, we can provide structure through a curriculum, classes, and online resources, but our learners’ many successes are accredited to their tenacity and dedication. The Brainline matric cohort has proven that they were up to the challenge, and that they have the internal motivation and drive to become the leaders that our country so desperately needs,” states Cronje.

“To all matric learners who may not have passed or done as well as you would have wanted, we would like to encourage and remind you that there are many ways to still achieve your desired results. Investigate the option of supplementary examinations later in the year or consider redoing a subject with Brainline to improve your marks.

“Having a matric certificate will stand you in good stead for the rest of your life, so whether you choose to swap subjects to something better suited to your individual aptitude or persevere with the subjects you originally attempted, it’s important to take this opportunity and make a success of it.”

Benefits of online learning for learners

The onset of the digital age has created a wealth of opportunities for South African learners to enrich and complete their schooling, providing learners with greater freedom and support than ever before, notes Cronje.

“Online learning teaches learners independence and self-discipline. Additionally, they become accustomed to studying in a digital environment and holding themselves accountable for studies and deadlines.”

Brainline is open to any learner, irrespective of their geographic or demographic status. There are also no entrance exams or other prerequisites other than having access to a computer and internet connection and having passed previous grades.

Shreya Balipursad shared her matric experience, saying, “The matric experience was not an easy one. It was a journey that consisted of many difficulties, and many responsibilities. However, these difficulties are what made the year valuable to me. With each difficulty, I learned a lesson, and was able to gain knowledge about myself, and the material I had to learn. Prior to prelims, I had to learn to develop a good work ethic, and time management. I have applied to study Mining Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, and a BSc in Geology. My plans are to study Mining Engineering, and hopefully work in a job related to the field. I also plan to enrich myself in various ways, as I move forward.”

Cathy George, Head of College at Reddford House Blue Hills, is proud of this year’s matrics. She says, “Each year, our matrics set out to do themselves proud in their final exams. The class of 2022 is no different. I am humbled and extremely proud of their collective achievements. Furthermore, we are delighted that our students are achieving consistent matric results since our first matric group of 2019, with a 100% pass rate each year. Through hard work and determination, our students have each achieved something remarkable. As the Reddford family we share in the celebration of the effort made by all of our teachers and students as they persevere to grow into the best versions of themselves.”

Dr Ronel Burger, Managing Director of Reddford House, commended the Class of 2022 for overcoming the negative influence that Covid had on their group specifically. The Johannesburg-based Reddford House school - Reddford House Northcliff - which is part of theInspired Education Group, proudly congratulates their Class of 2022 for their excellent results in the demanding International Examinations Board (IEB) national senior certificate exams. Reddford House Northcliff received a special commendation by the IEB for Taylin Moore, who achieved within the top 5% across all IEB schools nationally in six or more subjects and a rating level of 7 (80% or more)  in Life Orientation.

Of particular note are nine students who achieved A and B aggregates, with Taylin Moore achieving seven distinctions and Tiisetso Mashishi achieving four distinctions. Overall, the 2022 matric cohort achieved 45 distinctions, an average of 1.41 distinctions per student.

Taylin had this to say about her matric experience: “Matric has been such an incredible year that has undoubtedly changed me as a person. It has been one of the most rewarding battles I’ve had to face, and it was such an exhilarating experience not knowing what the future holds yet fighting for it with everything I had and having unshakable faith through all its ups and downs. It gave me an endless number of opportunities to realise the strength I have in my humanity, in leaning on friends, family and teachers, and embracing the chaos of having to balance the responsibility of being head girl as well as academic pressures and expectations.

“I have applied to study medicine at Wits. From a young age I’ve been taught the value of life and how it is the most priceless gift we receive. That ignited my desire to protect and care for it. My plans are to eventually become a paediatrician because children are so full of life, hope and love and they shine a light into our world that is desperately needed and heartbreakingly endangered. Being able to treat and care for children would be the greatest honour of all.”

Leandri Fick, Head of Reddford House Northcliff shared her excitement, “The class of 2022 never left a stone unturned, as this vibrant group of students always aimed to give only their best. The results speak for themselves, and I am bursting with pride as I have no doubt that you are ready to take on whatever the future may hold.”
