2023: What A Year We’ve Had!

2023 - what a year it was for the NASREC Johannesburg Expo Centre (JEC), hosting a slew of large events, all of which were a major success.

“We’re really proud of the work we’ve done in 2023,” says Adele Hartdegen, CEO of the JEC. “Amongst the many events we’ve hosted, we’re particularly proud of the BRICS Summit in September where we welcomed leaders from around the world. We also hosted the AGOA Forum in November, which included the excellent ‘Made in Africa’ exhibition.”

Big Names, Big Successes

Despite a number of challenges facing the BRICS Summit this past year, the JEC were prepared to step up when the event’s specifics were finalised. This was the first year that South Africa hosted the BRICS Summit.

“All in all – a big success. Well done South Africa for hosting a 15th BRICS summit so well,” said Minister of International Relations and Cooperation Naledi Pandor.

It was also the first time that the AGOA Forum was hosted in South Africa.

“We have just hosted a successful 20th AGOA Forum in Johannesburg where we made a case for the extension, or reauthorisation, of AGOA beyond 2025,” said President Cyril Ramaphosa after the event.

More than 160 business participants and trade unions turned up to engage on trade and investment matters, with approximately 2 000 participants amongst them at the AGOA Forum.

One of the biggest highlights of the forum was the ‘Made in Africa’ exhibition. Around 520 firms, including services, automotive, coffee, and clothing and textiles businesses, displayed their products at the exhibition, showcasing the industrial capability on the continent to procurement officers.

“AGOA shows what business and government have been able to accomplish to collectively grow the economy and create jobs. It has also been instrumental in establishing Africa as a promising trade destination,” said Trade, Industry and Competition Minister Ebrahim Patel.

Plenty of Fun to be Had

Aside from the big international events, the JEC also hosted a range of exciting events that brought out the fun side. At the top of the list was the annual The Rand Show, South Africa’s entertainment and shopping extravaganza. The Rand Show attracted tens of thousands of visitors and hosted more than 400 exhibitors and brands.

“We are thrilled with the success of the Rand Show,” said Hartdegen. “The show continues to provide a fantastic platform for businesses to showcase their products and services while offering visitors a super fun and exciting experience.”

Ultra South Africa held its Johannesburg leg at the JEC in March, drawing in thousands of music lovers ready for the ultimate electronic music festival. Fans were treated to headliners like Alesso, Fisher, Adam Beyer, Joris Voorn, and more, in an unforgettable experience.

Comic Con Africa saw more than 80, 000 comic, gaming, and superhero fans descend upon the JEC for one of the most spectacular events to date. This was the 4th edition of Comic Con Africa and was possibly the most well-attended to date. Three halls of the JEC were dedicated to the celebration of all things pop culture, with a kid’s zone and a gaming lounge.

The Portuguese Festival celebrated with Portuguese food, drinks, singers, dancers, and entertainment, wowing attendees with a spectacular event.

Education Makes its Mark

The JEC also played host to a number of education-based gatherings, including the National Taxi Indaba and the Matric Indaba (Indaba is the isiZulu for meeting or gathering). The Taxi Indaba brought together leadership amongst government and the industry in order to collaborate and discuss issues facing the industry and to come up with solutions for the future. Similarly, the Matric Indaba brought together leaders in education to discuss important challenges facing the education sector.

Looking Forward to 2024

After such an exceptional year the JEC turns its attention to 2024, where it has another wide range of events to host. From Trade Shows & Exhibitions to Conferences, and from Corporate Functions to Project Launches, the NASREC Johannesburg Expo Centre continues to host events of the highest calibre. The King’s Children’s Home just outside East London is a safe house that provides a temporary home and place of safety for abused and abandoned babies and young children. Founded in 2008 by Tracy and Jonathan King, who run the local Crossways church in the area, King’s Children’s Home has positively impacted the lives of many children in the Eastern Cape.

Touched by the plight of these children when the family relocated to the East Coast, the young Joel Smith who matriculated from Selborne College last year, pledged his support and instead of an 18th birthday party, he tackled the famous 100km Amatola Mountain trail in the picturesque Hogsback area together with his dad Martin.  They completed the 100km trail in two days and raised R55 000 for The King’s Children’s Home.

Joel set his sights on a bigger adventure for 2023, which resulted in the father and son duo tackling the 252km Lesotho Border to Border challenge starting from Maseru on 16 December and finishing six days later at Quacha’s Nek.

“The conditions were challenging over mountainous terrain with a 9000m elevation gain, very few flats, an average temperature of 30 degrees and the thin air due to the altitude. Spending time in nature and having the opportunity to run through untouched remote mountains, was humbling and special,” says Joel.

Joel took up trail running three years ago and is prone to blisters. He has tested various socks and shoes in preparation for this expedition. The team started their running training in the middle of August this year, straight after they both competed in the Transbaviaans mountain bike marathon race.  Their trail running schedule for Lesotho consisted of hours of short, fast quality sessions during the week, while the longer, slower runs are run over the weekends. They averaged about nine hours of running per week clocking between 40 to 100 kms per week.

“I’ve tried and tested a variety of socks, but my favourites are without doubt the FALKE Blister Protection All Terrain, while my dad prefers the FALKE Hidden Dry.  The FALKE Compression Calf Sleeves help to avoid cramping. At the same time the arm sleeves were a massive help to protect our skins and help reduce the heat as the route offer very little shade.”

FALKE sports socks are light, breathable, cushioned for comfort, recyclable and engineered for performance.  Manufactured from BCool recycled eco-friendly textile fibres, these running socks provide optimal support as well as a damping effect to prevent the formation of blisters through good shoe contact and power transmission.  Graduated compression socks reduce the risk of twisted ankles, support weak areas such as the Achilles' tendon, aid faster recovery and reduce fatigue when running.

The father and son team enjoys a variety of sports and have participated in challenging multi-sport adventure races last year - the Feral Duo multi-sport 24-hour event over 150km and the Expedition Africa adventure race in the Knysna region spanning 120km.

Joel comes from an active family, but says his grandma is his biggest inspiration. At 80 years old she still runs and cycles almost every day and started taking the kids at King’s Children’s Home for hikes and runs. “This inspired me to also use my passion for running for a purpose.”

Through this fundraising drive, Joel aims is to raise R100 000 before the end of January. Donations can be made to The Kings Childrens Home Trust, Nedbank, Branch code 198765 and account number 1002487722 – using JOEL as your reference.

"Ballito's blend of upscale living and relaxed atmosphere aligned perfectly with the Starbucks experience," Leah explained. "Whether you're a holidaymaker or a local, our store offers something for everyone with our signature handcrafted touch."

Celebrating Summer with a Special Collaboration

The opening of Starbucks Ballito coincided with the vibrant Matric Rage, offering matric students a fresh and safe spot to meet up for their "moments in between" the partying. It was a place to recharge and re-energise during the day.

The opening event was also marked by an exciting collaboration with Havaianas. The first five guests in line on that Saturday received hampers valued at R1200, kickstarting the summer and the holidays. These hampers included branded Starbucks gift bags and festive ornaments, a R300 Havaianas gift card, and a set of the iconic Starbucks reusable cups.

Guests queued outside of the centre from 4 a.m. to be the first in line, with the first guest also receiving a month’s worth of free coffee on the Starbucks Rewards app!

Meet the Store Manager

As guests stepped into Starbucks Ballito, they were greeted by the warm and welcoming presence of our store manager, Moki Ndzimande, a seasoned coffee enthusiast with a deep connection to the local community. Growing up in Matatiele and now living in Groutville, Moki's journey to Starbucks began with a passion for coffee and a serendipitous meeting in 2017. "To me, being a Partner, what employees are called at Starbucks, means bringing ownership, equality and accountability into every cup we serve," Moki said.

Your Invitation to Discover Artisanal Coffee Culture

"I was thrilled to invite everyone to our opening on the 18th of November," said Moki. "Join us at Starbucks Ballito to enjoy our exquisite range of handcrafted coffees and delicacies, we always love hosting coffee tasting experiences with our guests! It's not just about the beverages; it’s about the entire Starbucks experience, and we couldn't wait to share it with you."

In a special assembly, the Headmaster shared valuable life lessons that can extend to all Grade 7’s around the country as they transition to high school.

Reflecting on the year’s milestones, Headmaster Mr. Frank Rumboll, said, “As I embarked on this journey as the new Headmaster of The Ridge at the beginning of 2023, I was excited by the possibilities that a School of The Ridge’s magnitude and depth presents. As we have grown together throughout the year we’ve witnessed remarkable spaces for boys to be known and grownI take immense pride in our collective achievements and look forward to the new year with the opportunity to take our endeavours and commitments to even greater heights.”

Among the cherished traditions that define The Ridge School, the Matric Special Assembly stands out. This annual gathering unites Grade 7 learners on the verge of transition with their soon-to-graduate matric counterparts. This memorable tradition stands as a testament to the enduring bonds and camaraderie that thrive within the school’s community, marking an occasion filled with nostalgia and anticipation.

During the assembly, Mr. Rumboll offered invaluable guidance and insights to Grade 7 learners. However, these shared insights extend beyond the school's boundaries and hold value for Grade 7 learners across the country as they prepare to navigate the critical transition to high school.

Mr. Rumboll emphasised:

  • Embrace New Beginnings: With high school on the horizon, Mr Rumboll encouraged Grade 7 learners to embrace the exciting journey ahead. It's a time of new beginnings, and it offers the opportunity to discover untapped potential and talents.

  • Stay Committed to Values: The Ridge School takes pride in instilling strong values like respect, integrity, compassion and perseverance. Mr Rumboll reminded Grade 7 learners of the importance of upholding their values as they embark on their high school adventures, as it will help them navigate the complex worlds of adolescence and beyond.

  • Seek Guidance and Support: Transitioning to high school can be a monumental change. Mr Rumboll emphasised the importance of seeking guidance from teachers, mentors, peers, and parents. It's a shared journey, and students should always remember that they're not alone in their endeavours. He reminded Grade 7s about the power of the many relationships they would have formed during their years at The Ridge.

  • Draw from Literature, Philosophy, and History: Close to 60% of the Grade 7 group volunteered to participate in the school’s newly created RidgeUp programme this year. Mr Rumboll emphasized the many powerful lessons the Literarure, Philosophy and History to which they were exposed, would have taught them and how these knowledge-enhancing experiences will differentiate them going forward.

Mr Rumboll concluded with a profound message saying, “May you tread the paths of High School with courage, kindness, sensitivity towards others (and otherness) and continue displaying an unquenchable thirst for knowledge. Remember that this is not just a transition; it's a transformation. Embrace the challenges, cherish the camaraderie, and let your journey be a testament to your potential. The future is bright and it is waiting for the confidence and purposeful-driven nature of your taking and giving.”

PROTEC, a national NPO that has been building successful STEM careers in South Africa since 1982, is closing the year with exciting plans and strategies for expanding the geographic reach, the number of teachers and learners to be impacted, and the range of programmes in PROTEC’s portfolio in forthcoming years.

Balan Moodley, CEO of PROTEC, says that PROTEC can look back with some pride on four decades of successful STEM (science, technology, engineering, maths) educational support for learners in disadvantaged schools. “But we are not resting on our laurels for a moment. We are now asking ourselves what we need to do in the next 40 years to ensure even greater success in meeting the dire need for learner and teacher educational support in STEM subjects.”

Moodley says, “Both our existing and new projects highlight the strength of our partnerships with our wide-ranging donor base – without them we would certainly not be in a position to achieve the success we are able to deliver. PROTEC has capacity for nationwide reach, and as our donors are seeing this potential and engaging with us, we are able to provide valuable educational support in STEM fields. This year saw South Africa rejoicing with our indomitable Springbok team as they brought home the Rugby World Cup for the fourth time – under the banner of #StrongerTogether. This is a powerful truism in so many aspects of society, and one that PROTEC is keenly aware of.”

In April 2023, the Trialogue Knowledge Hub reported that, according to the World Economic Forum, “it is critical that learners study STEM subjects in order to create a more employable workforce. Most of the top scarce skills occupations in South Africa are STEM-related. Developing STEM skills is also critical to achieving the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, particularly when it comes to boosting the number of women and girls entering STEM-related careers.”

Reflecting on PROTEC’s ‘scorecard’ for 2023, Moodley is upbeat. The organisation:

1. Closed out the large-scale five-year Telkom projects in Garankuwa, Gauteng, and Gqeberha, Eastern Cape as the largest that PROTEC had ever engaged in. It came to an end in 2022 with three matriculants making it onto the PROTEC top 10 matriculants list.

2. Strengthened ties with Wits University’s Engineering Faculty, and started exploring other avenues for collaboration, including a revised teacher development model.

3. Onboarded Abbott Laboratories’ project in Roodepoort for grades 10-12 learners with an aptitude for STEM subjects. An aim of this project is for Abbott to collaborate closely with the learners, introducing them to careers in biochemistry and other relevant careers in the healthcare sector.

4. Onboarded BTE Renewables projects in schools in the Eastern Cape (Adelaide and Bedford) and Northern Cape (Pella and Pofadder), reaching primary and high school learners, and teachers. Here too, the BTE Renewables team is hands on and is supporting all initiatives and exploring new ways of assisting these communities.

5. Celebrated its 40th anniversary with an inaugural and fun Golf Day at Wanderers Golf Club followed by a gala dinner at Protea Hotel Wanderers on 9 June – both of which were heartily enjoyed by all attendees.

6. Is anticipating more positive matric results in January 2024 by the committed and hard-working PROTEC Class of 2023.

7. Embarked on extensive planning for the next four decades, starting with the development of a five-year strategic plan that will be announced and launched early in 2024.

Also early in the new year, PROTEC and donors are finalising various mammoth new projects that will dramatically expand PROTEC’s reach and impact of:

  • Teacher development, to ensure teachers are equipped to inspire and educate learners effectively in STEM subjects from Grade 4.
  • Learners in earlier grades to encourage and enable a greater number to study STEM subjects from grades 10-12.
  • A larger number of learners studying STEM subjects in their final three years of high school.

Moodley adds, “PROTEC has nationwide capability and we welcome anyone and everyone with an interest in building the pool of STEM graduates in South Africa to engage with us – and make a real difference to the future of individual young lives, while also strengthening the country’s economic and social environment. We also once again make a call to the alumni of PROTEC to join us through various levels of engagement with a view to foster the ‘pay it back’ philosophy.”

Laugh-Inducing Mind Games – A Hypno-Hoot!

André the Hilarious Hypnotist Returns To Joburg

Durban born, André Grove (53), better known to most as André The Hilarious Hypnotist, has for over the past 3 decades been entertaining theatres, corporates, fundraisers, and others with his unique ability to turn anyone (brave enough to volunteer) into the star of the show.

André wanted to be many things when growing up, and his career as an entertainer goes back to his childhood, when he performed magic and clown shows at children’s parties and events.

It was not until he saw the legendary Max Collie (a South African stage hypnotist and a household name in the hypnosis field because of the antics he had people perform on stage) on stage in the 1980s. It was then that André knew what he wanted to do… to become a stage hypnotist.

Max Collie became André’s mentor. He watched all his performances, toured with him, and would ask him (many) questions to learn the ins and outs of hypnosis and, of course, stage hypnosis.

After matric, André did his two years (compulsory) military service, and then went onto study drama, teaching and psychology at university in Pretoria.

It was after the passing of Max Collie, that Jeff Egnos, (Max Collie’s producer), that André was and invited to do a gig as a stage hypnotist. This eight week sold out season at the Victory Theatre in Houghton, Johannesburg back in 1994 launched André’s professional career as a stage hypnotist.

André has made over 200 television appearances, and featured in his own 14 part TV series on kykNET, Skaterlag met André.

We caught up with André as he gets ready to entertain Joburg audiences this festive season at Montecasino.

Do you practice any form of hypnosis therapy when not on stage or mainly stage “entertainment” hypnosis?

I am a stage hypnotist and my training lies in Theatre, hypnosis and comedy. Although I would be able to assist people with hypnosis I prefer to leave that sector to psychologists and psychiatrists trained in the subject matter at hand and I stick to what i am good at which is entertaining people on stage

Are there any rituals or routines that you do before going on stage as part of your preparation? How do you strike the balance between entertainment and the intriguing world of hypnosis?

I don’t have any rituals before a performance. Finding a balance between entertainment and stage hypnosis is rather tricky. Every night is different because I am never sure of the volunteers who will be taking part on stage. I have to rely on my training in comedy and drama to keep the show flowing while selecting the best volunteer for a specific routine. I believe the balance between the two comes from years of practice and experience but even now I have moments when I am not sure what or where the show is heading too.

What are the different stages of hypnosis that volunteer audience members can experience during the show? Why is it that some people can’t be hypnotised?

There are normally three stages when judging a volunteer. Your first stage is what we experience every day for instance when driving a car a great example of this is if I told you not to think of a pink Elephant – the first thing you think of is a pink Elephant. The second level will elicit a response from the volunteers on stage but they might laugh or giggle while performing the action. IT is not a case of the person not being hypnotised but rather the person laughing at themselves for performing the action and not having any idea why they are indeed doing so. Your third stage or your somnambulistic stage is the deepest stage and at this level the volunteer will do most if not everything you tell them to do. Keep in mind that the persons actions are still determined by their morals and values

Do you have any “tricks” up your sleeve for instances where there are no eager-beaver audience volunteers, first time round? What’s a good number of volunteers to work with during a show?

Every night is different and so are the volunteers. I have to rely entirely on who comes up on stage to create a performance. I have no “tricks” which assures me that I am going to have a easy show. I prefer to have a mix of 5 to 6 volunteers on stage as this is a comfortable number to work with and a easy number to create a performance.

What makes for great comedic hypnotism subjects that are sure to leave audiences in stitches, during and after the show?

The more creative the volunteers are the more likely they are to make for a really good subject but having said that I often find that people who are considered none creative become the stars of the show.

When someone is hypnotised, do they know what is going on during the moment? When they are told to do something, even if it’s something they wouldn’t normally do, are they able to be aware of what is happening?

Most people find that when they are hypnotised they are more aware of what they are doing but have a strange desire to partake in the performance. Memory loss does not happen to volunteers as often as people tend to think it does.

What’s been some of the most memorable (stand-out) moment(s) for you after entertaining many thousands of audiences both locally and abroad from any of your past shows?

There has been many, so many that I wrote a book called “I Can Juggle Now”, which captured some of these hilarious moments. For the most part the show tends to run its course but I have had the odd stripper and other reactions to my suggestions leaving me at a loss of words.

Quick Answer Questions:

Describe yourself in three words. Creative, Single, TalkativeWhat are the first two items on your bucket list? America and Cave explorationWhat’s your favourite season? SummerAsk for permission or ask for forgiveness? Ask for forgivenessCookies or cake? CakeAny phobias? None

Finally, what do you hope audiences take home from the show, and what’s your Christmas wish / message to all this Festive Holiday Season?

To me the most important thing is that every member of the audience leaves the show having had a super and hilarious time at the performance with a desire to see the show again. I wish everybody a incredible festive season filled with laughter and joy.

Having performed in more than 7 countries across 3 continents, and hypnotised over 30 000 people in South Africa, André’s shows are still pulling in the numbers.

So… if your 2023 has been a hard taxing year, and you need to laugh and laugh and laugh until your sides hurt OR, if you are looking to have your moment of fame in the spotlight, and are totally ready to (really) let loose and succumb to André’s suggestions, while under hypnosis, then with the snap of a finger you can become anyone or anything André desires you to be… from Superman to a dinosaur, a washing machine to a sprinkler, a typewriter to a world-famous musician, and a whole bunch of other side-splitting routines, which range from the sublime to the unimaginable.

Johannesburg, 30 November23: The United Nations International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD) is celebrated annually on 3 December, aiming to promote an understanding of disability issues and to mobilise support for the dignity, rights and well-being of persons with disabilities. An estimated 1.3 billion people experience significant disability. This represents 16% of the world’s population, or 1 in 6 of us. In South Africa, that figure is 15%, or 8,9 million. Persons with disabilities face many health inequities, including stigma, discrimination, poverty, and exclusion from education and employment. They also face barriers in all aspects of the health system, such as negative attitudes and discriminatory practices and lack of information or data collection and analysis on disability.

“Disability inclusion is critical to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and global health priorities to achieve health for all, as envisioned in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development,” says Prudence Selani, Head of Corporate Affairs at Sanofi South Africa. On this International Day of Persons with Disabilities, Sanofi is celebrating its commitment to the 2023 theme, ‘United in Action to Rescue and Achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) For, With, and By Persons with Disabilities,’ through several initiatives.

In collaboration with its implementation partners, Sanofi has launched a unique external training programme for persons with disabilities, especially those from disadvantaged communities. This programme is designed to break barriers to education post-matriculation, offering management training and entrepreneurship skills in areas like financial literacy and marketing. This initiative also supports people with post-matric qualifications striving for employment, enhancing their employability and professional growth.

“As part of our commitment to Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment (B-BBEE), 10% of learners on our Youth Employment Service “Y.E.S” programme are persons with disabilities, underlining our commitment to diversity and inclusion,” says Selani.

Sanofi’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion is bolstered through Employee Resource Groups (ERGs). The Ability+ ERG promotes a safe environment for employees to declare their disabilities, offering support and resources. Sanofi is also offering employees the chance to enrol in South African Sign Language courses, to transform its workplace into a disability-friendly space.

“Our partnerships with local and global organisations that are focused on disabilities will enable us to conduct workshops with leaders and employees, fostering a culture of understanding and empathy.”

“Sanofi also emphasises employee wellness and mental health, offering extensive support and wellness programmes,” says Selani. “These initiatives underscore our dedication to the well-being of all our employees.”

“As we mark IDPD 2023, Sanofi encourages organisations across all sectors to join us in these efforts. Together, we can make significant strides towards a more inclusive society and achieving the SDGs for, with, and by persons with disabilities,” concludes Selani.

Together, we are making a difference. Join us in our journey towards an inclusive future.

Hey Grade 12s! Let's have a chat about something crucial - the pass requirements for getting a Grade 12 Higher Certificate. It's a big deal, right? So, let's break it down in a way that's easy to understand.

What's a Higher Certificate Pass?

First off, a Higher Certificate Pass is one of the several ways you can pass your Matric. It's a stepping stone to further education, but it's different from the Bachelor's or Diploma passes. Think of it as your ticket to certain certificate courses at tertiary institutions.

The Must-Know Requirements

Alright, let's get to the heart of it. What do you need to bag a Higher Certificate Pass?

Pass 6 Subjects: You need to pass at least 6 out of your 7 subjects. This includes your Home Language.

Home Language: You must score at least 40% in your Home Language. It's non-negotiable. Your Home Language is super important, so make sure to give it the attention it deserves.

Two Other Subjects: Apart from your Home Language, you need to score 40% or more in two other subjects. Choose your strengths and focus on them.

Three Subjects at 30%: For your remaining subjects, you can scrape by with just 30%. But hey, aim higher if you can!

One Official Language at First Additional Language Level: You need at least 30% in one official language on the First Additional Language level. South Africa's rich in languages, so this is your chance to show off your skills!

What This Means for You

So, what does this all mean? If you meet these requirements, congrats! You've earned a Higher Certificate Pass. This opens doors to certificate courses and even some diploma courses, depending on the institution and your marks.

A Few Extra Tips

Remember, while a Higher Certificate is great, aiming higher can give you more options. Think about what you want to do after Matric and set your goals accordingly. And, keep in mind, education doesn't stop at Matric. Whether it's a Higher Certificate, Diploma, or Bachelor's pass, it's all about what you make of it after school.

Conclusion: Yes, You Can!

So, there you have it. The requirements for a Grade 12 Higher Certificate might seem a bit daunting, but they're definitely achievable. Keep focused, study hard, and remember - your Matric year is just the beginning of an exciting journey. Go for it! ?✨

#RAGE2023#PARTYRESPONSIBLY

In just two weeks, thousands of matriculants will be descending on the Kwazulu-Natal coast or Plettenburg Bay to party. Local teenagers will start celebrating the end of their academic year by either partying locally or travelling to one of the local rage hotspots to attend the annual Rage Festival taking place between 1st and 10th December.

Fidelity Services Group has called for these festivities to be done in a safe and responsible manner.
Charnel Hattingh, Group Head of Marketing and Communications at Fidelity Services Group says that while safety is a priority for the event organisers at many of these raves, everyone who attends should also take responsibility for their own safety.

She offers these easy safety tips for Grade 12 learners on their way to ‘Matric Rage’ events as well as everyone else who will be celebrating away from home in a possibly unfamiliar area:

  • If you driving make sure you consider installing a tracking app like secure drive where your its location is updated on the mobile applications every two seconds providing true real-time live tracking. Knowing exactly where you are means accident alerts can be received in real time resulting in faster emergency dispatching where every second counts.
  • Theft alerts or panic button activations similarly will save lives when response units are dispatched without delay.
  • Before leaving your accommodation for the day or night, ensure that anything valuable is locked away in a drawer or safe.
  • Never carry large amounts of cash or go out wearing flashy or expensive jewellery.
  • If your accommodation is a holiday house or apartment, make sure all the doors are locked, the windows are properly shut and that the alarm is activated if a system is installed.
  • When out at different events and activities, be aware of your surroundings and arrange with your friends to keep an eye on each other and your belongings.
  • If you are approached by a suspicious individual; walk away and report it to the closest security or to the police.
  • Do not accept drinks from strangers and do not leave your drinks unattended. Spiking of drinks is still rife.
  • If you leave the place where you are staying tell someone where you are going and the time you expect to return. Save their number to your mobile phone or memorise the details of the person to be contacted in the event of an emergency and save them as one of your ICE (In Case of Emergency) contacts.

When it is time to return to your accommodation:

  • Never leave without your friends.
  • Do not accept a lift from a stranger; rather use transport provided by the event organisers.
  • Driving after a few drinks is never an option. Call a cab or use event shuttles if they are available instead.
  • Consider appointing a designated driver or someone who agrees not to drink and will be responsible for getting everyone home safely.

Hattingh urges parents and caregivers to have a conversation with their kids about these safety tips, to help prepare them.

“The reality is that matrics will be partying, and they have certainly earned the chance to blow off some steam. Let us encourage them to do it as responsibly as possible. It may also be worth speaking to your security provider about personal safety apps that are available as well as services such as Meet and Greets to ensure peace of mind,” she concludes.
