The University of Cape Town and GetSmarter, South Africa’s leading online educator, are running the second presentation of the University of Cape Town (Law@Work) Paralegal Practitioner course. The course teaches a foundational understanding of South African law, which can be used for personal and professional benefit, or turned into a lucrative job in the paralegal industry. The four-month, part-time course, which starts on 30 April 2012, is presented entirely online through GetSmarter’s innovative online learning platform.

Ignorance of the law is no excuse for non-compliance with it, so it is vital for everyone to have a good basic understanding of their rights and duties in society. This has led to a boom in the paralegal industry, which consists of legal specialists who have not fully qualified as lawyers, but who can provide valuable guidance, support, advice and administration to laypeople and legal practitioners alike. Paralegals can work in any industry and sector.

The UCT (Law@Work) Paralegal Practitioner course is targeted at any current office administrators, personal assistants, recent graduates, journalists, NGO staff, businesspeople and anyone else who wants a leg up in their career by obtaining a thorough understanding of South African law.

The UCT (Law@Work) Paralegal Practitioner course covers a wide range of topics, including human rights and the Constitution, contract law, the law of evidence, court procedure, legal writing and research skills, and more – everything needed to perform a basic paralegal function.

GetSmarter’s advanced and user-friendly learning model provides students with a personal and professional educational experience. Students work through the course material together and receive continuous academic and administrative assistance during the course. Each of the 16 modules includes comprehensive and up-to-date course notes, discussion forums where students interact with one another, an interactive quiz and video lectures to make the course material more engaging.

GetSmarter is a high-touch online education company that works together with top universities and industry experts to present courses throughout South Africa. It has trained over 6,000 students in the past four years, in such diverse topics as labour law, wine evaluation and internet marketing – all from the comfort of the students’ homes or offices.
The course convener is Melanie Louw, who has worked at Old Mutual, Momentum and Absa, providing various legal and advisory services. She is currently a practicing attorney and her fields of specialisation include insurance law, tax planning, retirement fund legislation, estate planning, company law and consumer protection law.

The course starts on 30 April 2012, and registrations close this Friday, 20 April 2012. Please contact Anique on 021 447 7565 or This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. for further information.
