Network switch certified for hazardous environments

Submitted by: Howard Mellet

Duxbury Networking has added to its family of high-end commercial and industrial grade managed network switches with the Lantech 8350-451, an eight-port 10/100/1000T dual speed SFP (small form-factor pluggable) combo unit allowing multiple options for connectivity. . Meeting some of the strictest industrial safety standards - with UL Class I Division II / ATEX Directive 94/9/EC approval - the switch is certified for deployment in hazardous environments where its presence will not add to the danger in the event of a fire or chemical explosion.

“It is a sound choice for networks operating in the most challenging environments, such as those found in mining and the oil and petroleum industries where the switch may be exposed to flammable or even explosive conditions,” says Andy Robb, chief technology officer at Duxbury Networking.

“It’s also certified for operation in harsh weather conditions as it is able to withstand ambient temperatures ranging from -40 to + 75 degrees Celsius making it ideal for out-door applications in surveillance, factory automation and the telecommunications industry,” he says.

One of the key features of the Lantech 8350-451 switch is its self-healing properties contained in its Pro-Ring2se self-recovery scheme. Designed to assist in recovering a ring network with up to 50 switches in less than 10 milliseconds, the switch supports the DLR (Device Level Ring) standard for industrial automation, The DLR protocol provides for fast network fault detection and reconfiguration in order to support demanding control applications.

The Lantech switch, which also also supports ping commands sent via the Web to facilitate trouble-shooting, can be connected to a variety of alarm systems and is programmed to send email and SNMP (simple network management protocol) trap alerts to network operators and other key personnel in the event of power or port failures. It has a built-in reset button allowing all setting to be restored to factory default.

The Lantech 8350-451 is available from Duxbury Networking at R 3999 ex VAT.
