According to Claire Alexander, marketing manager for Sun Microsystems Sub Saharan Africa, the conference agenda is geared around the most pressing technological challenges and opportunities facing Java developers and Solaris engineers. “With the attendance of top Sun executives including Jeff Jackson, Wyllys Ingersoll and Sang Shin, South African developers have the opportunity to hear directly from top minds that are shaping the direction and future of key technologies such as Java and Solaris,” she says. Jackson is Sun's global Vice President of engineering, managing the Solaris operating systems, clustering, database and storage software. He is also involved with the open source programme surrounding OpenSolaris and the Java Desktop along with other Solaris technologies.
His experience extends beyond the UNIX-based Solaris operating system; he formerly managed the Java Standard Edition and Java Enterprise Edition platforms, products and the developer programmes and tools groups within Sun. Alexander says Jackson therefore has a unique perspective on the Java Platform as one of the originators of the J2EE project at Sun. Addressing the ever present necessity of security in enterprise technology environments, Wyllys Ingersoll is a senior staff engineer in the Solaris Security organisation. He joined Sun in October 2000 and has since worked on a variety of security related projects.
During his time at Sun, Ingersoll has worked on the Kerberos codebase and was the technology lead for updating Solaris network utilities to use Kerberos. He has worked on parts of the cryptographic framework and most recently has been focusing on creating a set of unified key management interfaces for Solaris. Sang Shin, a Java technology evangelist and principle architect at Sun Microsystems, has developed and delivered numerous talks on Java SE, Java EE, Java ME, Web application frameworks such as Struts and JavaServer Faces and Web services technologies to worldwide developer audiences.
Sang Shin, who has taught Java programming at Brandeis University and Boston University, is currently teaching a free "J2EE programming with Passion!" online course to several thousand worldwide Java developers. “Already interest in Sun Tech Days has drawn a strong response from the South African developer community which is keen to rub shoulders with these and other internationally recognised information technology specialists.
