Operation Hunger Supports World Hunger Day - World Hunger Day 28th May 2013

Submitted by: Cheryl Wearne

The 28th of May is World Hunger Day: a day that highlights the fact that 870 million people, one eighth of the world’s population, exist in conditions of extreme hunger and poverty, living on less than R10 a day. Hunger kills more people than AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis combined. Millions of women, men and children die, needlessly, each year, because of chronic persistent hunger of which TWO MILLION are children.

On this day, Operation Hunger would like South Africans to stop, reflect and acknowledge that 24 million of our fellow South Africans still live below the poverty line of R10 per day.  While Operation Hunger’s focus on poverty, malnutrition and nutrition relief has remained unchanged over the years, the organization main focus has been on helping communities to help themselves through implementing a variety of sustainable projects.

In partnership with communities Operation Hunger has broadened its activities. Projects range from water harvesting, vegetable gardens, chicken and egg laying production, soup kitchens and basic training in health and life management skills, with a view to initiating self-sustaining, income generating community-based activities that combat malnutrition, foster healthy living and independence and engender feelings of self-worth and dignity.

In order to extend its operations, Operation Hunger is appealing for support, either financially or as a volunteer. You could become an “OH Activist” or even get the kids involved with “OH Youth Action”. Operation Hunger throws out a challenge to South African citizens: Try to live for just one day on R10.
