"... to become and be the most secure, the most stable, with the best customer service experience for our clients.  Those are our three pillars - security, customer service and being number one in terms of payments online space."
Johan Dekker, COO, PayU MEA

Producer of the eCommerce Africa Confex, Kinetic, sat with Johan to find out what their strategies are, what's in the pipeline in terms of value added services and what their plans are as Gold Sponsor at the 2016 eCommerce Africa Confex.

" ...one of our strategies is that we aggregate the most payment methods....we're really aggregating a lot of services and on top of that we offer value added services. In our value added services, we've got a fraud monitoring system through red retail decisions.  We do 3D Secure and have got different security settings for merchants of Three Secure; high, medium and low - depending on the risk at the time..."

"We are adding more value added services and one of the latest we've just added is the Call Pay.  There, again, are two flavours. It's call to assist or call to monitor and in the call centre space we will now enable the call centre to do a transaction where the card data doesn't enter the call centre.  Using either IVR or "on call", where the agent is on call with the customer and can talk them through their transaction experience without having access to their sensitive card data."

Why did PayU become involved with the eCommerce Africa Confex?

"We've got an exciting products offering going into Africa.  It's wise to present some of our plans into Africa and how we can partner with merchants; how we can partner with third party service providers and how we can offer better payment services which are secure, trusted and stable into Africa through partnerships.  That's why we are looking at this event as an opportunity to present what we want to do as well as talk to partners and build relationships."

"In terms of our pipeline and what we are doing next, we are working on iPay, which is quite aninnovative EFT solution.  We've got a current EFT solution which allows a user to pay to one of our four bank accounts with each of the major banks and then we've facilitated notification of that payment to the merchants so that they can ship the goods or provide the service. With the new solution - it basically makes a real time transaction where the user selects their bank, they get redirected to their bank screen and on that screen, the solution injects the reference and the amount and the user can't change them - he then selects for his normal banking screens to pay and it's aninstant payment.  The merchant gets the notification and they can offer the service.  The benefit of that system over our current is that you cannot get the reference wrong and you can't get the amount wrong, so it gives a more accurate match transaction."

"We're also very excited, we're launching our PayU wallet with a wallet offering where we're targeting online consumers of a store of value where they can load cash onto the wallet and use that as a tran mechanism online in addition to that it will be a card store to facilitate easy payments via either a QR code or authenticated user name to allow to transact securely with all our merchants.  In that solution, we do not share any of your sensitive data with the merchant; they just get the transaction data.  For the merchant the benefit is the guaranteed funds, there's no fraud risk."

"In terms of Discovery (one of our big partners) - we've been running their online mile system for over 2 years now and we've facilitated R2mil of online transactions per month with that product.  We've extended the relationship; let's say a debit order and online payment system where gym members to second tier gyms can facilitate a payment to get a Discovery benefit and we facilitate the debit order payments service there or our credit card payment service for those gym memberships in conjunction with the Discovery Miles program."

"we are also pushing the business into Africa, we've opened offices in Nigeria, we're launching in Nigeria soon, we are busy basing offices in Dubai and we've got quite a big payments business already in Turkey that falls within PayU MEA.  We are part of a global company; PayU; and in terms of the Global footprint, we will soon have business in India, South America and 13 Eastern European Countries. The PayU group is moving forward into a very exciting space.  There are basically two legs; Consumer, the wallet and then the payments business, which I represent for South Africa and MEA.

What is PayU looking forward to gain from the eCommerce Africa Confex?
"A sense of what is going on in the market - what other service providers and our competition is focussing on.  Where we fit into where the market is going and then also pick up some interesting partners where we can create bigger business for both AND accelerate ours..."

The eCommerce Africa Confex takes place 17 - 18 February 2016 at the Cape Town International Convention Centre.
