Toolcrib Management Solution Implemented at Eskom

Eskom wanted to move away from their paper-based tool and equipment management solution to a more sophisticated and reliable system. Eskom currently has 10 training centres across South Africa. Each training centre houses tools and equipment to the value of R1.6 million and they were loosing approximately R800 000 in total per annum due to tool and equipment losses. Given these losses, Eskom required a more sophisticated tool and equipment management solution to curb the losses incurred as well as to to manage service and maintenance required on the tools and equipment. Eskom’s requirements for a toolcrib management solution are not unique and these requirements often speak to the needs of most tool crib and warehouse managers.

Latest technology in toolcrib management

A turnkey toolcrib management solution was implemented to address Eskom’s requirements in this regard. The hardware delivered included marking systems, 2D code scanners and biometric fingerprint scanners. A custom software package was designed and developed to meet Eskom’s unique requirements. The toolcrib management solution implemented at their training centres ensured that they were able to:

  • monitor tool and equipment movements,
  • provide a reliable method of recording these movements,
  • record calibration and maintenance done on tools and equipment
  • record future services and calibration required on the same tools and equipment, and lastly
  • establish accountability and responsibility for the tools and equipment issued to trainees.
