Throwback Cinema Ticket Prices Take Us Back To The Past…

Submitted by: Janet de Kretser

More throwback movies at throwback prices from Ster-Kinekor in May

Back to the Future 1 is one of those classic movies that take us back and yet it can be seen over and over. So, it makes sense that Ster-Kinekor has included it among its Throwback Cinema titles to be screened during May. What also makes perfect ‘cents’ is the movie ticket price – just 50 South African Rands. And, since it doesn’t take too many items in the shopping basket to add up to R50, rather head to your nearest Ster-Kinekor cinema and enjoy this and three other classic throwback titles.

First up, and taking us back to the roaring 1920s in Chicago, is the classy 2002 comedy crime musical, Chicago, which scooped six Oscars including Best Picture. The film releases in select Ster-Kinekor cinemas nationally for one week only from Friday 10 May.

Starring Renee Zellweger, Catherine Zeta-Jones, and Richard Gere, Chicago follows the story of a small-time chorus dancer called Roxie Hart (Renée Zellweger) will kill for fame. After doing just that, she lands behind bars alongside vaudeville star Velma Kelly (Catherine Zeta-Jones), who, with the help of hotshot celebrity lawyer Billy Flynn (Richard Gere), has spun her crime into a media frenzy. When Flynn takes Roxie’s case, he makes her the latest tabloid sensation, setting the stage for a singing, dancing catfight between the all-too-willing rivals.

From Friday 17 May, we get the chance to Meet Joe Black once again, when this iconic film re-releases at select Ster-Kinekor sites. This 1998 fantasy romance drama explores the topic of Death, which takes the form of a young man who was killed in an accident.

Joe Black asks a media mogul to act as his guide to teach him about life on Earth and, in the process, he falls in love with the mogul's daughter. Starring a fresh-faced Brad Pitt as Joe Black, with Anthony Hopkins as William Parrish and Claire Forlani as his daughter Susan, the film is directed by Martin Brest.

And, who can forget the line from the love-struck Anna Scott: “I'm also just a girl standing in front of a boy asking him to love her.” Notting Hill is the Throwback Cinema title for the week of 24 May. This 1999 romantic comedy unpacks a set of circumstances that makes Anna Scott (Julia Roberts), a famous Hollywood actress, fall in love with William Thacker (Hugh Grant), owner of a bookstore in Notting Hill. But the paparazzi's fascination with her complicates their bond.

The final Throwback Cinema title for May, from 31 May for a week, is Back to the Future 1. In the 1980s, an experiment by maverick scientist, Doc Brown, turns out to be faulty. It leads to his teenage pal Marty McFly, a 17-year-old high school student, going back into the past in a time-traveling DeLorean to the 1950s, where he is forced to reunite the younger versions of his parents. The first film in the Back to the Future franchise, released in 1985, is directed by Robert Zemeckis, and stars Michael J. Fox, Christopher Lloyd, Lea Thompson, Crispin Glover, and Thomas F. Wilson.

We’ve had a wonderful time going through the catalogues to select the films, and we are sure everyone who books a ticket to watch one of them will have a similar big screen experience.”

Ster-Kinekor has lined up some all-time greats for the month of May. And, with the ticket price at just R50, this is your chance to revisit some iconic movie blasts from the past, or perhaps to discover them for the first time.

Throwback Cinema titles will be screened at the following Ster-Kinekor sites: Fourways and Sandton in Johannesburg; Irene and The Grove in Tshwane; Secunda Mall, Secunda; Ilanga, Mbombela; Mall of the North, Polokwane; Boardwalk in Richard’s Bay (till 30 May); Gateway in Umhlanga; Somerset Mall, Somerset West; and Tygervalley and V&A Waterfront in Cape Town.
